no. but now Southeast Asia has 3 spots instead of 2. only Japan directly qualified from this tournament.

I'm kind of confused here. Didn't the top five placers in 2008 get automatic slots to the 2009 FIBA-Asia championship? What rule change happened this time?

actually no !

2008 Stankovic Cup

1- Jordan (directly qualifed)
2- Kazakhstan (extra spot for Central Asia)
3- Kuwait (extra spot for Persian Gulf)
4- Qatar (extra spot for Persian Gulf)
5- India (extra spot for Central Asia)

Qatar and Kuwait finished 1st and 2nd in the Gulf Cup and qualified along side UAE and Bahrain (later withdrew)

Kazakhstan and India qualified via central Asia Qualification tournament !
4 teams (KAZ, IND, UZB and SRI) and 4 spots ==>> all qualified without a tournament

So you mean the Philippines will still have to go through the SEABA tournament first? Not that I'm doubting their ability to win there, though :D

But how come Kazakhstan, India, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka all managed to qualify without a tournament? Didn't MABA have its own tournament last year?

I believe only four teams were in that qualifier, so no actual tournament took place.

absolutely, if more than 3 teams register in your region, you have to compete.

nothing new, even WABA hadn't a qualifier in 2009, Iran was the host of that qualifier but Syria and Iraq withdrew in the last days and Iran and Lebanon qualified without a match.

this year WABA has 4 + 1 (host) spots. WABA has 7 teams, Yemen never compete in senior tournaments (they always send their seniors to Junior tournaments instead :D) and if another team withdraw (most probably Palestine) the rest will qualify without a tournament !

Basketball is not important in Central Asia / South Asia countries. also most of these countries are economically poor and their teams are very weak (remember Sri Lanka in Tianjin) I think only Afghanistan has a TEAM ! they beat India in South Asian Games but it seems they only can compete in multisport games due to lack of $$. ( I think their NOC only support their basketball federation for these games)
