Here are the first rehearsals of the Big Five that go straight to the finals automatically qualified.

Blue - "I Can"

Amaury Vassilli - "Sognu"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35CRyMf73oo

Lena - "Taken by a Stranger"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-guiwEXNYzs

Raphael Gualazzi - "Madness of Love"

Lucía Pérez - "Que me quiten lo bailao"

The finals will have these five plus 20 others from the 2 semi-finals for a total of 25 songs. 10 songs will come from each semi-final out of 19 candidates each. So half of the countries will drop without making it to the final show.

Also after first rehearsals are over, the second more elaborate rehearsals are in full progress after correcting some technical hitches.

Tomorrow Monday there are dress rehearsals. First semi-final is on May 10 and the second on May 12. The final is on May 14

A lot of things were said about how dismal the UK Blue first rehearsal was. The second rehearsal is a little bit better but still, it needs more harmony and something is lacking. I think it is too late to fix it and they have to rely on the great set on the theatre while they are performing, but I heard much better performances from other countries. Here's the Blue 2nd rehearsal

You should if you have the time. It is a great show to watch plus interesting screen arrangements this year different for each song. It is 3 hours long so you have to spend all your afternoon and part of the evening there...

I can tell you it is a great experience. These are songs you have never heard and in most probability never will again. There are genres that are used mostly in Eurovision, they are Eurovision style, but hardly in the charts.

Check also the thrilling (though biased) voting session after the songs are over. Yes, it will be a great lesson in geography as well LOL

Plus, you will visit tens of countries through the introductions and the languages and all.

I'll watch it direct from the Eurovision website, but watching it on a wide screen with other people and probably reacting positively or negatively to this or that song will make it worthwhile.

Plus the event is free. No charge.

Of course it will help if you are familiar with some of the singers or the songs. These are readily available through Eurovision site

http://www.eurovision.tv

and through Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_2011

BTW most of the songs are in English so no problem getting the lyrics... For the foreign language songs, just appreciate the beauty and novelty of the languages and the traditions. Yes this is a diverse world where other languages are used in songs. This should not put you off.

Tell us your favorites...

The qualifiers from the first semi-final are:

Serbia
Lithuania
Greece
Azerbaijan
Georgia
Switzerland
Hungary
Finland
Russia
Iceland

I have to say that this time I like the results (which is rare). I liked Switzerland, Georgia, Finland, Iceland and Hungary.

I'm quite shocked to see Lithuania advancing to final. Not that rivals were strong, but I just didn't believe in our song and performance...

Also strange that Turkey failed to qualify, usualy strong contender even for top places wasn't selected

We should also mention those who were disqualified. They are:

Poland
Norway
Albania
Armenia
Turkey
Malta
San Marino
Croatia
Portugal

From my favorite list, two were disqualified and I am so sad they weren't given a chance to be heard in the final by tens of millions:

Norway's "Haba Haba" by Stella Mwange (originally Kenyan)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzY5cTNdKQY

... and San Marino's "Stand By" by Senit (originally Eritrean)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4EPYt6Mj9o

Also a shame Turkey wasn't chosen. They were really good.

How can Europe reject such great tunes.

From the qualifiers (there are 10), the ones I like are Finland (absolutely the most), then the countries Hungary, Azerbaijan, Greece, Russia, Switzerland.

From this that qualified for final, i dont like only Russian song, its just usual garbage, while Albania for example had great song. Also almost all countries singing in english, Eurovision should be about diversity of cultures, and only Greece and Serbia sing in their languages from this countries that passed to final.

I absolutely agree. Singing at least part of their songs in their own language should be the norm. This was the case when Eurovision was really good. Now it is so much anglicized.

I don't know about you, but I loved the introductions when we visit various German locations through the eyes of people from the participating countries and we learn so much about what they do in Germany.

The German scenes are absolutely breathtaking and encourage you to visit this great country, and the characters we are introduced to so interesting and approachable.

The stage is very well prepared and the background works mostly very enjoyable.

I have to agree, Germany did a great job organizing the event.

Although I have some doubts about the sound quality: I mean, it looked like some singers really can't sing, especially in the beginning of the show, so I wonder whether this was really the case, or were there some technical problems.

The sound quality was OK, it's just some of the singers just couldn't hit the right notes

I'm very happy Norways HABA HABA didn't make it through.
Although the "haba haba part" is more or less ok...the rest of the song is really bad and she can't really sing that well.

As far as San-Marino... It's good atmosphere music but not special and memorable enough i guess for anyone to remember to vote for it.

Turkey: wild Show... but the song is just not for the eurovision.
But nice to see a different side of Turkey than all the political stuff thats always in the news.

The only interesting thing so far was basketball related pre-song clip with Muli Katsurin & Alba Berlin :p

My new faves : Slovenia & Estonia ( both were surprisingly good for this year Eurovision )

Bosnian "Mirza Teletovic" with rusinka, vodka & rakia was good in a clip, but live performance sucked big time.

I actually liked quite a lot of songs in the second semi-final: Slovakia, Moldova (still remember them from the last time they participated), Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia (what a catchy chorus!), Latvia and Denmark.

If I had to vote, I'd probably vote for Estonia.

Ha, you guessed more or less all those who qualified with the exception of Bulgaria . Bulgurian song was pretty solid , but the singer kinda exaggerated chasing the camera : she scared the hell out of TV voters :D
