Eurovision Song Contest

  • Thread starter Thread starter worldbasketball2
  • Start date Start date
I just checked it out... BTW, may I ask, what other song? The song is the same, just with different arrangement.
And it fits perfectly for ESC standards...

Wait. What?

Are you telling me that this song:

...is the same song as this(?):

I know I am tone-deaf but I'm pretty sure that these are completely different songs :D

Europe...

Europe...

Can anyone explain what is Russia doing on Eurovision? I always thought it's from Asia and NOT Europe...

Can anyone explain what is Russia doing on Eurovision? I always thought it's from Asia and NOT Europe...

Russia is a Eurasian country meaning with territories in Europe and Asia. Russia is historically a European country with a history of imperial conquests in Asia.

Here is the actual division of European Russia and Asian Russia. On Europe's border, from north to south: Nenetsia Autonomous Okrug, Komi Republic, Perm Krai, Bashkortostan Republic and Orenburg Oblast; On Asia's border, from north to south: Yamalia Autonomous Okrug, Khantia-Mansia Autonomous Okrug, Sverdlovsk Oblast and Chelyabinsk Oblast.

The technical term for such countries is transcontinental countries.

Another good example is Turkey which has territories in Asia and in Europe. But here the situation is the exact opposite. Turkey is historically an Asian country with a history of imperial conquests in Europe. Bosphorus separates the two: Europe is west of the Bosphorus and Asia east of it.

The city of Istanbul is a transcontinental city with parts in Asia and Europe.

Cyprus is geographically part of the Asian Middle East, and its land mass an extension of what we call Asia Minor. But it is legally part of Europe.

Perhaps more strangely, Kazakhstan is a Eurasian transcontinental state with with West Kazakhstan and Atyrau provinces extending on either side of the Ural River! It legally keeps a right of applying to European Broadcasting Union and to Eurovision Song Contest, but has not done so.

Also under question are how European Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are, since all these are geographically in Asia as Europe starts north of the Caucasus mountains and all these are south of the Caucasus.

In any case, Russia, Turkey and Cyprus and Israel as well Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan are all part of European Broadcasting Union, that's why they take part in Eurovision really.

There is the special case of Israel, which although being an Asian state is included in Eurovision for practical reasons, as if it ever applies to Asian competitions, it will be boycotted by a big number of Arab and Islamic Asian states.

There is also the special case of Morocco, an African state that actually took part in Eurovision. Lebanon, an Asian state decided initially to take part, then it withdrew for political reasons just a few weeks before the contest.

BTW, welcome to Interbasket. You now realise by now that you can get more than basketball in Interbasket. You ask a question or throw in a notion, and sooner than you know, your knowledge widens... LOL

Wow... someone has lots of time on their hands !
Although it does have some connection to basketball and a different thread where it is was asked why is Maccabi in the EL?

Well, it is related to Eurovision in many ways LOL. But we learn new things on the way LOL

I can see Russia and Turkey taking part in the future in Asian music competitions as well, without relinquishing the European competitions.

Hopefully, this Eurovision thread will not degenerate into what is Asian and what is European... I'd rather discuss songs than plunge into acrimonious never-ending give and take on how European or Asian some nations are... LOL

By the way, here is the Moroccan entry to Eurovision. That was in 1980

Here is the Lebanese entry that wasn't as Lebanon withdrew:

Interestingly Israel presented a Hebrew / Arabic / English song to Eurovision. It was by duo Noa (Achinoam Nini) and Mira Awad "There Must Be Another Way (Einaich)"

Noa and Mira had cooperated in other projects including much earlier in 2002 in a cover version of the Beatles song "We Can Work It Out"

Eric Saade (the Lebanese-Swedish singer) has released the music video of his song "Popular" -- which is the official Swedish entry to Eurovision 2011 -- but it beats me why he opted for a very dark light for the video - we know it is in a club with very dim lights, but c'mon...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VybgIkjycU

He could switch from a dim club atmosphere to a shiny beach one:

I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful video. They nail it. Initially I didn't like the song at all. But now after seeing the reaction of so many people, I am beginning to warm up to the song. They even parody the breaking of the glass... LOL

So Eric Saade is getting 12 points I gather? LOL

--

Also I noticed in the notes that there were parodies for Paradise Oskar, Stella Mwangi and Dana International songs, but I couldn't locate those.

Is there any way you could post them here?

The first rehearsals have begun and all the artists are getting their chance at the stage.

Don't forget the first semi-final is on May 10, the second semi-final on May 12.

The finals will be on Saturday May 14. Only UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain go straight to the final without passing through the semi-finals.

Here just a sample "A Friend in London" rehearsal for ""A New Tomorrow"

And Jedward song "Lipstick"

Eric Saade's "Popular"

These are just samples, but it gives an idea of how the stage will look like.

With such arrangements, the performances are becoming like a music video with all that is going on in the screen behind.

Thanks for this. He is making good points you know about the process of selection past and present.

This shows also how countries have particularities about how they select what they will represent them.
