Eurovision Song Contest 2011 is scheduled on 14 May in Dusseldorf, Germany with two semi-finals on 10 May and 12 May 2011.

This thread is to discuss all matters regarding the Eurovision contest with songs from various countries, past and present. Some countries have already chosen their final songs for this year, so it would be a great place to let us hear the tunes.

You can also talk about songs that did not succeed to be chosen, but were really good songs or were from talented musicians.

Or about all topics related to the subject

From an initial listening to some of the already qualifying songs, my heart goes for "Da Da Dam", the Finnish entry by Paradise Oskar, who in addition to singing has written both the lyrics and music to the song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFRAVSwoDkk

DA DA DAM

Peter is smart, he knows each European country by heart
He likes to sit under an apple tree on his yard
And wait for an apple to fall

When Peter is nine,
His teacher tells him that this planet is dying
That someone needs to put an end to it all
And so when Peter comes home
He tells his mom

I’m going out in the world to save our planet
And I ain’t comin back until she’s saved
I’ll walk my way to see the King and parliament
If they don’t help I'll do it by myself

I don't wanna be
Da da dam, anekatips da da dam
Da da da da da da, da da dam

Peter is young
He tries to talk but no one listens to him
Everybody’s busy living and dying
Not thinking bout what they're doing

But look at the boy who ...

Went out in the world to save our planet
And he ain’t coming back until she’s saved
He walked his way to see the King and parliament
But they all turned their heads and walked away

Singin’

Da da dam, da da dam
Da da da da da da, da da dam
(repeat)

And now I’m going out in the world to save our planet
And I ain’t comin back until she’s saved
I’m walkin in the footsteps that young Peter made
And everybody is welcome to join
And sing with me

Da da dam, da da dam
Da da da da da da, da da dam
(repeat)

Here is an acoustic live version of the song

For the first time in a long time, I liked the Turkish entry: Live it up by Yuksek Sadakat

This band used to write their songs only in Turkish, and even though they may not appeal to all tastes, I think they were better.

Definitly this song is a huge step back from great songs they used to sing. It simply doesn't work. Here are some better Yuksek Sadakat songs:

It is so sad this Eurovision song doesn't "live up to it" (sorry for the pun)

An English (Turkish) song that really worked and is I think one of the best entries of Turkey is Athena in "For Real" in 2004. Now this is a wonderful and unforgettable song and they were brilliant live:

By the way, Turkey will win if they put somebody like Hayko Cepkin... But probably he simply hates Eurovision, although Eurovision would adore him if he makes an appearance

Here is Yalnız Kalsın from Hayko Cepkin

I was pleasantly surprised by the very jolly song "Haba Haba" (means Little By Little in Swahili, a very well known African language). It is sung by Stella Mwangi a Norwegian-Kenyan singer and is the official Norway entry to Eurovision this year and has topped the Norwegian Top 40 for 2 weeks now even before the contest. It was chosen through the Melodi Grand Prix preselection process.

Here is the live version:

HABA HABA
Lyrics

When I’s a little girl my grandma told me
That I could be just anything I wanted to
When I’s a little girl my grandma told me
That I could be just anything I wanted to

She said that Everything I work for
Everything I wish for

Everything I look for it is right in front of me
Everything I work for
Everything I wish for
Everything I look for it is right in front of me

And she said ah…

Haba, haba, hujaza kibaba
(repeat)

When I’s a little girl my grandma told me
That it’s the little things in life that’s gone make me happy
When I’s a little girl my grandma told me
That it’s the little thing in life that’s gone make me happy

She said that

Little by little, fills up the measure
Don’t ever give up keep on moving
Little by little fills up the measure
Don’t ever give up, keep on moving

Haba haba, hujaza kibaba
(repeat)

Finally the UK entry by the boy band "Blue" has been announced. It is "If You Come Back" , a very decent and beautiful song, but I feel will not make a big impact despite the good looks and the fame the band enjoys:

I don't what's it with UK entries. One I really liked was Daz Sampson in "Teenage Life", yet it did nothing. That was in 2006.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oUX40ng-tw

Another flop but yet again a great tune was Gina G and "Ooh Aah Just a Little Bit"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3nROFIF5ek

But then Cliff Richard didn't win with "Congratulations" which is mind boggling

You probably misunderstood smth here mate ;) The song must be new one, while this song was a hit in some 2004

BTW, Daz Sampson's song was really good one, but as far as I remember that year was the best ESC since now, surely UK deserved higher place, but you know the tendencies of the contest...

I apologize and stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out. The British song by "Blue" is actually called "I Can". The song will premiere on 11 March 2011. So that's quite soon. I will put it as soon as it is available.

The song "If You Come Back" that I mistakenly put was there last hit in 2004.

Me personally I like their hit "U Make Me Wanna"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koHo5-0DVlI

I am also fond of the Chinese version of that same song done with Elva

My favorite of Blue was exactly "If You Come Back", from what I remember, I also liked "Breath Easy" and "Guilty".
Wll wait for ESC song, hopefully won't be worse :)

BTW, yesterday while browsing youtube, found out that ESC2009 runner-up Yohanna from Iceland (I fell for her then :o ), once again tried her luck, but finished 3rd in National Qualifiers. However loved her song (of course maybe I was affected by the old feelings too :o :D) Icelandic version

Lovely song, although the from visual point of view I liked the old Yohanna's look more - she was kinda more natural with blond hair :p

Today is Israeli National Qualifiers, apart from traditional bo-o-oring ballads & pop there is a little bit of fresh air :

1) Chanson

2) Reggae

3) Ireland folk style

4) Country style

Hope the reggae song will win

Never was a fan of reggae, so I liked 3rd one the most, Irish folk motives makes her more lively, tough song misses smth on it's burden. However, at least you, guys, have smth to choose from, in Lithuania exactly the boooring pop ballad won:

I liked the 2nd place entry the most, but nothing spectacular too

Like most of the times Lithuania will give a hard time to everybody in fight for the last positions :D

Yohanna come to Lithuania! :o

I also think that the second one was much nicer...

Regarding our song the song that Billy and me like have nice lyrics, but maybe it's not an Eurovision song as others don't understand the language... If it was translated to English it would be much better.

Objection, your honor :p

Last 2-3 years the winning songs were in English, so everybody jumped the bangwagon & started to sing in English . Nowadays you can hardly tell who is from which country , let alone remember the melody

Maybe it's my personal crush for exotic languages, but I enjoyed Yohanna for the sound of Icelandic or Estonian girls signing "Urban symphony" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOsmEO_osXQ&feature=related

The Danish entry is just growing on me as a fantastic song.

It is by a band called "A Friend in London" and the song is called "New Tomorrow".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_3Ma2URVzg

They sing very well live. Listen to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA7Hf0lvRYY (live)

However a controversy is erupting regarding the song saying that the music, particularly the chorus is just a faster version of the Japanese music "Silk Road" by Kitaro

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoURE7kheKg

Not that this band "a Friend in London" is a talentless plagiarizing band. They are great to listen to. Just check their output setting Eurovision aside:

The Light

What A Way

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZg8ABF4www

Now You're Here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzvV8DmgKOI

So as you see, way way above just a Eurovision band, is it. This is a band to watch many many years beyond Eurovision.

This reminds me of a very similar controversy with the Swiss entry of 2008 when we had this great song by Paolo Meneguzzi called "Era stupendo"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2yktrmzsE0

But then a controversy rose that it was taken from a song by Amy Diamond called "It Can Only Get Better":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogu0sd1fHNw

The Swiss song didn't even make it to the final.

All attempts to bring something new & refreshing successfully failed, as expected.

Israel will be presented by a crappy pop-dance by Dana International(tm)

The last place @ESC , here we come :D

I thought that Billy put all the participants there, and suddenly today I saw that the winner yesterday was this one

That's more typical Eurovision song and not bad for Eurovision standards... and not something that will make me to watch Eurovision...
