I think it's time for this year's Eurovision thread. :) I know that the music quality is not so high in ESC, but it's always interesting to see, who people vote for, so I always enjoy it. This is Lithuania's entry:

It's a fun song, a little similar to LT United's "We are the Winners", which was the most successful Lithuanian entry so far. It's catchy and I think they have chances to at least get an average place in the final.

I am confused. We were meant to chose between 3 songs, and they were all the same, just 3 performers. All of them were very, very bad...
In the end, we chose one, but it is so bad i can't describe it...
But, one the internet voting it is number one song
I can't believe it!

I am much looking forward to see what the freakish performances will be this year

Israel with yet another tear-drop ballade

Doesn't it sound like chanson ? Well, it ensure French vote , so we will not finish @ last place :D

I know most of you people think, this "talent show" is actually funny, but i have a serious question.
The funding for this PR campaign comes mainly from the public television stations (in Greece, ERT), which means tax payers' money. A fact that is downright provocative if you ask me.
The main reason for the existence of this awkward fun-fare?
Culture?
During more than 5 decades of existence,it has produced what? ABBA?
(I hate those guys)
Entertainment?
Nothing more than a reality show can offer.
Well don't get me wrong i enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy but apart from being stupid in a reality show kind of way which makes this rather sad, this idiocy is being held every year with MY tax MONEY.

Well, sorry for taking this more seriously than i should but it is actually provocative to see all these talentless people having their PR campaigns on my expense.

Oh, this is my favourite eurovision performance of all time:

:p :D :p

Come on, don't take this so seriously. I truly enjoy the Eurovision. Not because of the music, but for me it's just fun to see performers from so many countries, cheer for your country, predict the winners and who will vote for who (it's usually very predictable, but there are always some surprises).

Is this really a big deal? The Lithuanian national television first failed to gather the sum needed to send Lithuanian performers to Eurovision, but then they found a private sponsor, which agreed to pay 90.000 Euros. So if 90k € is all that is needed to participate, I don't think the money should be an issue for anyone (plus they make some money back with the commercials). Lithuania and many other countries paid 500k € just for a chance to be considered for a wild card to FIBA WC (by the way, the same story with the governement failing to provide money and private sponsors stepping in), compared to that, Eurovision seems quite cheep.

By the way, I'm sure that in a long run this contest is economically beneficial for most participating countries.

The main reason for the existence of this awkward fun-fare?
FUN!

During more than 5 decades of existence,it has produced what?
What exactly should it produce?

Entertainment?
Definitely!

Nothing more than a reality show can offer.
I disagree with this, unless the reality show would have participants of almost all European countries competing against each other. But as of yet, I haven't seen a reality show, which was more entertaining than Eurovision (Well, I haven't seen many of the, but still).

Peace. :)

Well, the actual numbers in Greece are much bigger from what i've heard and there are no private funds involved afaik.Stealing and misusing the tax payers' money is a popular "sport" in Greece and ERT has been involved in quite a few scandals of similar nature.
I'm surprised and saddened really about this WC wildcard info...
To tell you the truth 95% of greek sports survives on State money (and i don't mean NTs and National Associations, i mean private owned sports clubs) and this is no lesser scandal than the funding of personal PR campaigns like the Eurovision song contest.
To put it simply: In which manner do the People profit by investing in such crap?
Once again, don't get me wrong. I recognize the fact that there are people who don't mind paying for this. The problem is that some DO mind. So, the way this is funded is actually scandalous.IMO it would be fairer if each national broadcasting organization held a fund-raising...

By the way, I'm sure that in a long run this contest is economically beneficial for most participating countries.

And you base that on what exactly?

Well, not my kind of fun, but that's a personal opinion.

What exactly should it produce?

Well, correct me if i'm wrong here but the original idea (besides bringing the people of europe together ) was to produce some new talent, sth that has not happened if you disregard the sole case of ABBA...

From what i gather from your post, the main attraction of this song contest apart from being fun, is the competition between countries.
Well, they could always hold a popularity contest and skip the boring and talentless singing part altogether...
:p

Edit: I can't believe my longest post on IBN is for the Eurovision contest. :o

And you base that on what exactly?

Countries spend millions of Euros to promote and create a good image of itself, expecting to get those money back from the tourists. Maybe it's not a big deal for countries like Greece, which is already #1 destination on many peoples' map, but for all the smaller and not so well known countries it is a great way to promote itself.

Simply love this thread :p

Well, here is Estonia's entry, Malcolm Lincoln (Robin Juhkental) - Siren:

Well this competition is becoming worse and worse every year, in in the last years the only good song was this heavy metal guys from Finland :D
but it's still entertaining in some way that I can't explain :p it's a bit like American idol's auditions...:D and if we lose we can always blame it on those anti-Semites :p:D:)

when is the eurovision this year anyway?

Lithuanian song has "message" and I like it that way.

InCulto - Eastern European Funk lyrics

You've seen it all before
We ain't got no taste we're all a bore
But you should give us chance
Cause we're just victims of circumstance
We've had it pretty tough
But that's ok, we like it rough
We'll settle the score
We survived the reds and 2 world wars

Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk!

Yes Sir we are legal we are, though we are not as legal as you
No Sir we're not equal no, though we are both from the EU
We build your homes and wash your dishes,
Keep you your hands all soft and clean
But one of these days you'll realize Eastern Europe is in your genes

I'd feel ashamed about the Serbian entry if Eurovision weren't the competition it is...

This is the first year that I'm gonna vote, and it's only because the Bosnian candidate, Vukasin Brajic, is a friend of mine. He's a refugee from Bosnia and has been living in Serbia since childhood...

Bosnia uses an idiotic way to choose it's Eurosong participant. They have a Muslim/Croat/Serb three year cycle (and it's the Serbian year). Vukasin was lucky because almost all Bosnian Serb musicians are in the Turbo-folk genre, and there were not much left to choose from.

The version in Serbian (Bosnian:D),
Vukašin Brajić - Munja i Grom:

English version,
Vukasin Brajic - Thunder and Lightning:

this thread confirms my theory

Europeans can't sing or dance to save their life :p
