This season is winding down, and it's time to start talking about the next one.
Twelve clubs are permanently licensed. Monaco will also receive a wild card, as will Hapoel, the Eurocup finalist and winner. That's fourteen teams. Now, there will be four or six spots open. Personally, I'm against expansion. There is no point in creating two conferences, this is not the NBA. And four more rounds is way too much.
Now, there is this news: https://www.championsleague.basketb...in-the-basketball-champions-league-in-2025-26. So sad about them, but what can I say? I just don't want Zalgiris to be the poorest club in this competition again, and if Alba is out and some rich clubs like Dubai and Hapoel are in, there will be even less reason to believe that we can make it to the Play In next season. Especially if there will be twenty clubs as some rumors say.
But the sad truth is that Alba is out. Contenders for four or six places in competitions are Paris, Partizan, Virtus, Valencia, Red Star and Dubai. Now, Paris is pretty much safe. Valencia, I don't know, do they even want to be the part of the competition after that decision from the last year? Virtus is probably out. They just don't have that much money? Red Star and Partizan? Is the Serbian government ready to spend this amount of money? If so, they will be welcomed with open arms and everyone will talk about their fans as if that's the reason why they have a place in this competition. Because if it is only about fans, then clubs like AEK or Galatasaray will have their place in Euroleague.
And don't ask me about Dubai, it's getting ridiculous!
I mean, they didn't even play in the Eurocup, and suddenly, they will be part of the Euroleague?
My prediction? Valencia and Virtus will be out just like Alba, and Euroleague will have three clubs from Middle East, two clubs from Istanbul, two clubs from Athens, two clubs from Belgrade, three clubs from French league, but only two clubs from Italy and Germany together. That's why NBA is creeping in, you can't have the future with almost zero interest in western Europe.
