Eurobasket 2022 - Group stage - Gameday 5

That's bullshit. Check your facts: Pau Gasol wasn't playing in 2013 (his brother was, though). And that alleged "tanking" against Italy never existed outside the imagination of the haters. Had Spain won the game against Italy, their path to the final would have been actually easier: Lithuania (which lost against Serbia in the first round), and then Croatia. I suppose that losing a close game against Greece (which ended dead last in the group) in the very first day of the second round was just, how do I call that? Rehearsal?

Dumb spaniards, if they didn't tank those two games they would have ended first in the group and earned the easiest bracket (Ukraine and Lithuania). But it never ceases to amaze me how some people prefer to attribute extraordinary capabilities to Spain, instead of accepting that particular year we had a very inconsistent team led by a clown coach who couldn't make in-game adjustments if his life depended on it. And as such, we lost nearly every contested game. And the same would happen the next year.

Yeah, give all the bad karma you can find, but a good coach, and I'll gladly take the deal.

What I do remember is a mock game between France and Greece to avoid facing Spain in QF. That was a shame, you know.

I'm sorry if I didn't remember correctly all the details about 2013, but I remember vividly that basketball comminity was not very pleased with the way Spain played some games before the knockout stage in more than one tournament. Didn't mean to single out Spain as the only one connected with tanking job, there are of course many other examples. For that matter, Serbia might tank tonight too.

For the same reason he earns millions: people pay tickets to see him play

why did Giannis play in a meaningless game?

It’s not that easy to just “leave out” players. Players need rhythm, teams need to work together (especially national teams that don’t have much training time together) and teams/players also need momentum.

Okay that makes sense :)

Honestly I think that Giannis himself plays too hard. There is even the joke around NBA stars that even at the All Star Game, Giannis goes 100% so he must be always the first pick.

I did not see the whole game today, but in the bits I followed, the Estonians were playing hard too... I think Itoudis could have kept Giannis out after the long break...

Some player are not able to go easy in games. They have to give everything in every game. Giannis is one of them.

Not Serbia. But Croatia and Ukraine did a funny thing today, making sure their final score ended in a very convenient 5 points difference.

And about Spain, if you brought up 2012 London Olympics, you may had a point. At least there was a clear benefit there.

That was an embarrassment and it’s actually super annoying that it’s kinda buried by everyone in the history of our NT. Probably because a bunch of teams were doing but that’s no excuse in my book. Does anyone remember exactly which game that was?
I can understand being chill and not trying too hard, but actively trying to lose to the point that you regret making the game winning shot is super cringe.

2009 final game of group stage. Winner earned a QF matchup against Spain. I clearly recall because I was watching the game to know who would be our next rival. De Colo's face after making the winning basket said it all.

Great to see Milutinov back against Poland. I can't believe how bad Ristic is. I just wish Bogdan was playing for Serbia now.

and his teammates'... I mean, that's an iconic game, even if for the wrong reasons.

At some point Spanoulis makes a huge three pointer from far out and instead of showing some emotion, he has this weird smile, presumably because his teammates were like "wtf man?"
