Draw for the FIBA World Cup [Manila, Philippines, Apr 29]

That's tough for Japan... Because they don't have opportunity to face any beatable African teams, while PHL has possible either Angola or CIV in their group.... I don't see that Japan will be higher rank than PHL... That's what i pointed in PHL forum... They didn't know how the WC procedures work.... In the draw, Japan is in POT 7, It means they will face tough European teams in POT 3... I don't see Japan beating Greece, Italy or Germany... While the easiest Japan will face in POT 5 is NZL....But NZL is also a tough team... Finland and DR w/ KAT is also impossible for Japan to beat too.... Sorry for Japan, they will be 0-3 in group phase....That's why don't discount out the FIBA Asia cup... Continental championships are important to ranked up your rankings... Look at Lebanon, from 59 to 43... That's what 2nd placers in Last FIBA Asia cup give to them...

good point.

good point.

Check mr. Mojo's analysis... Japan's possible opponent are Australia or Spain in POT 1, Greece, Italy or Germany in POT 3 and DR, NZL or Finland in POT 5... That's very tough for Japanese team... This is what i point in previous post in PHL forum.....If we used the old forum that using continental championships (In Asia, it's FIBA Asia cup) as qualifiers for FIBA WC or Olympics... That is indeed possible for Japan to be top in Asia and qualify for Olympics... But that is not the case in this current format......

But we have to remember, Greece needs a guy that will help Giannis, especially on offense... That's why having that more options is should be consider.... Both are good players anyway.... What do you think about Greece's chances anyway? I hope they will be group in Philippines' group... a guarantee 2nd round stint indeed there....

I think that what we should not forget that we are talking about a national team, whose players should feel proud that they participate, not participate in order to fullfil some term of their contract..
About Greece's chances, definately it is important not to have USA in our group. Australia is also tough but I guess not unbeatable.

Best possible group for Greece:

Philippines
Greece
NZL
Any of Angola or Ivory Coast

(Note: Because PHL is an Asian team, Greece can't face any Asians in POT 7 and Iran in POT 5 as per FIBA draw new procedure, while NZL is Oceania, they are separated w/ Asia)

Worst case group for Greece:

USA
Greece
Finland w/ Markannen or DR w/ KAT
Any of POT 7 teams (Doesn't matter because any of those in POT 7 are very beatable for Greece, But in POT 7, Japan w/ Hachimura and Watanabe are tough team in that POT)

I still guarantee Greece will make it to the 2nd round even they will be grouped w/ USA, Greece still have slight advantage over Finland even w/ Markannen or DR w/ KAT.... But Greece should not expect easy game against Finland or DR because having their own superstars in their team will elevate their game due to high confidence given by their star players w/ Markannen or KAT....

DR would really be a tough matchup for Greece. Greeks always struggle against athletic and fast opponents. 2019 against Brazil Greece blew up a 20 points lead and DR has quite good players like Delgado, KAT, Jean Montero. I also love Viktor Liz. DR is my dark horse.

I even heard the news in DR basketball community that their federation and their coach are going to Boston to talk w/ Horford... If that happens, any European teams should avoid DR in their group, that could be possible a group of death grouping w/ DR, KAT and Horford can co-exist, both can change their position either 4 or 5 or interchange each other in some parts of the game to avoid early foul trouble, since FIBA rules only allows 5 fouls per player....

They kicked out Germany 2019 without any player we mentioned here. A full rostered DR team is dangerous to any team.

Yeah... Even they kicked out Full strength Argentina in the last game of Americas qualifiers, The reason why Argentinians are out in this year's FIBA WC... Don't count out DR for granted this year...

I can give you guys one more hint. I am sure that the Philippines will get the easiest possible group. It was the same with China 2019. FIBA will surely want PH to reach the second round.

2019 was a single host event. Philippines will get the tough group anyway. In terms of Classification – in addition to the Gilas A&B (to play vs Angola), a similar lot can be made by FIBA for Japan E&F (vs Brazil).
But that's completely unnecessary disbalance, no?

Human rights violations, workers exploitation, women rights oppression, homophobia, one of the most toxic countries via climate change.

That's my reaction. FIBA sukcs balls again.

Actually my concern is not that… my concern is that their team is sucks… Indonesia, one of 3 current host for this year didn’t qualify even they are host because their level is too low… Indonesia is rank higher (85) than Qatar (89)… how can they manage to pull a decent line up in just 4 years? Indonesia try to hire multiple naturalized players but they can’t still qualify… building a good basketball will not be built overnight… Philippines, who are basketball craze country, still struggling to build a decent line up, how much is to Qatar , that has no basketball culture after all…

I'm not even talking about it. Even if they would buy Ja Morant for their team, they are gonna be trash. That's inevitable. Qatar just wants to attract luxurious events, that's all.

Actually I imagine them will host this event, but not too early as 2027.. my projection could be in 2031… I heard the rumors that Lithuania trying to host… why is it they didn’t try to host the event? Lithuania loves basketball just like Philippines….they can co host it with Serbia, Greece or Poland… I hope one day Lithuania will host fiba World Cup event

Unless they scrap that hagop rule then they can buy multiple naturalized players, just to be competitive… anyway they are the ones are the reason why the hagop rule was invented.. they (Qatar) abused the rules of eligibility.. they buy multiple talents from African, some European players and Latino players… but they were exposed in 2011… one of those familiar names was targuy nongombo (I can’t pronounce his true name), who was drafted by nba in 2011 too…

You may want to find out if there were any other competing bids. It doesnt sound like it from their press releases. They don't say that exactly but they did say there was no vote on competing bids and that Qatar was "the first to present a bid fulfilling the standard conditions." "First" probably means "only" here. I'd like to see evidence of any other country submitting a formal bid. Why would this be secret?

We know exactly who formally bid for the FIBA World Cup in 2019 (China and Philippines) and 2023 (ARG/URU and PHI/IND/JAP) along with the withdrawn bids (Russia and Turkey for 2023) and disregarded bids (Germany, Turkey, Qatar, France, Mexico, Venezuela, Lithuania, Russia bids for 2019) . Both 2019 and 2023 had only two formal bids, so it is not a leap to think there was only one here.

Tough to be too critical of FIBA if Qatar was the the only formal bid.

Israel, Romania, Poland, Croatia and Australia are those countries rumored bidding that event... But none of them are close to match Qatar's experience hosting major events like this... Maybe Australia can make it but they are not that serious (and have big money) to take this event....

Qatar's 4 stadiums that will likely use for 2027 FIBA WC

https://twitter.com/i/status/1651916998656286720

Aspire Dome - 8000 seats

Duhail Sports Hall - 8000 seats

Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena - 8600 seats

Lusail Multi purpose Hall - 16300 seats (likely will held the playoff to final round of the tournament)

Time travel from hotel to arena - 20 minutes only...

Conditions are different as were three years ago. Lithuania back then is not experiencing the brunt of covid and its consequentially damaging effect to its economy. And then comes the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Its spillover effect poses the final blow for Lithuania or any European countries to host 2027 FIBA WC.. their coffers has simply dried out and they are near bankruptcy. The willing nations left to host are oil rich countries like Qatar…
