Domantas Sabonis thread

Domantas Sabonis 6'9'' PF/C 1996

Has improved considerably over the past year as well. One year of practicing and playing with the senior team of Malaga completely changed his body and also the way he plays. Right now Sabonis kind of plays bully basketball, as he cannot use his right hand at all, But he has great IQ, can finish over his right shoulder in the post and can really pass the ball, something natural considering his last name but perhaps didn't really emerge until this tournament. He plays really hard, with passion, defensively and offensively fighting for position and has good feet and overall skills for a big. To be an NBA player he needs to develop a face up game and a very solid mid range jumper, because I'm not sure he is explosive and quick enough to go by people even facing up. He has a good hand and has been making 3 point shots when he has time and space but certainly it will be something he'll need to work on at Gonzaga. He will not be able to play bully ball in the NBA, so he needs to improve his skills to succeed and make it at the next level. Finishing with his right hand is also a must.

Domantas Sabonis – 2m05 – PF/C – 1996 – Lithuania

The young Lithuanian big guy was one of the most versatile players of the whole tournament. Averaging a double-double on this level when you are younger than the competition underlines what kind of prospect we are talking about. Being 2m05 tall, Sabonis had to play Center for the undersized Lithuanian team but his future position is most likely on the PF position. He has great hands and his strong left hand is really a beauty to watch when he receives the ball in the low post where he can create the necessary space to finish well of the glass. He has earned a bit of his father’s passing ability as he likes to go for the wrap-around dish for the cutters or the high-low plays from the top of the key. With his great arsenal of head and body fakes, Sabonis overcomes his lack of great athletic abilities nicely as he can put his defender out of positions on multiple occasions.

This gives him the possibility to put the ball on the floor easily and he likes to attack the defense on the dribble, mainly though over the left side. His shooting touch around the key looks promising and he should be able to develop an outside shot in the next years despite a poor percentage from the free-throw line during the event. With his choice to play College Basketball, Sabonis is certainly going into the right direction as he will work on his athletic abilities for sure. This will give him an additional dimension to his game that he is lacking a bit at the moment. But he has all the tools to become a tremendous force over the next years and should be a great complement to Joans Valanciunas and Donatas Motiejunas in the future.

Stats: 14.0ppg (56.2% 2FGs – 54.8% FTs), 11.4rpg

Nice finds NorCal, LithuanianCramWatch.

What really impresses me about Domantas is his defence for 18yo. Most of bigs take time to get it defensively - even those best like Valančiūnas, Motiejūnas, Gudaitis - but Domantas already shows great maturity at the defence for his age. That said - he's almost ready for the NT. It will be interesting if Kazlauskas will have him in the camp already next summer.

Domantas better graduate from Gonzaga with a degree now or Arvydas should whip his ass.

Seems like Sabas was sceptical about Domantas' decision :) Somehow I feel he turns into a beast no matter the environment. It might be the first season when I watch NCAA games to follow Domantas. Probably the first Lithuanian stud in this league after Kleiza.

In his debut game for Gonzaga, Domantas Sabonis scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Granted this was against an overmatched opponent team and yet still an impressive start for Sabonis. Sabonis first game Gonzaga.jpg

And as expected Domantas delivered. Looks like a stud in NCAA being a freshman. 12 points and 9 rebounds per game only in 19 minutes. Can only imagine how he will look next years with increased playing time.

Gonzaga has made a statement early in the season and looks like one of the best teams in the country. Part of the reason has been the play from freshman Domantas Sabonis, who leads the team in scoring thus far. The native of Kaunas, Lithuania has been named NetScouts Basketball's International Player of the Week for games from November 17th-November 23rd.

Sabonis has been one of the best freshmen in the country and provided productive minutes off the bench this week for the Bulldogs. He averaged 14.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in only 19.3 mpg over three games while shooting 16-of-20 (80 percent) from the floor. The 6-foot-10 power forward has provided toughness and efficiency inside. In his last two games he shot a perfect 12-of-12 from the field.

While just a freshman, Sabonis has looked like an NBA talent and may not be in Spokane very long. He's a good athlete that runs the floor well and rebounds at a high level. Sabonis has played well inside but his progress throughout his freshman season will be something to watch.

Interesting article on Domantas from SB Nation a couple days ago:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-bas...-sabonis-gonzaga-stats-profile-synergy-sports

Some highlights:

"He's averaging 10 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting over 73 percent from the field."

"Extend those numbers out per 40 minutes, and Sabonis is putting up over 19 points and 11.75 rebounds per night"

"He's scoring 1.135 points per possession, according to Synergy Sports, which ranks in the 96th percentile nationally"

"He's ranked in the 97th percentile nationally by scoring 1.2 points per possession on post-ups"

I saw couple of games of the Bulldogs and Sabonis is completely depends on how the team plays. If they looking a bit for him in the post, he will score, if not - he can be scoreless. And with NCAA game it can easily go either way particular night. Not to much of guards to play PRO pick and roll as well. I'm not sure Sabonis is not wasting his time in NCAA. At least he'll get better knowledge of USA basketball system and that will help him in his first years of NBA (hopefully). Another than that, he's playing among scrubs (compared to last year) and often is not involved or played enough.

Here's a good piece to have an idea how Sabonis is playing currently. He doesn't seem to be particularly bigger or more athletic, but he gets things done, has a great smell for rebounds and his post game is good. He's tough and very mobile in the post for a 18/19yo.

Wow, he has such long arms :o. He should be averaging a bunch of steals/blocks per game. His post moves are quite remarkable considering his age too, I think some training at the NT camp this summer could really be useful to him. He could learn some things from our two NBA big men.

Final Score

Bison 76
Bulldogs 86

Domantas Sabonis: 23 minutes, 3 for 4 in field goals (he got blocked in this image), no three-pointers attempted nor made, 1 for 4 at the free-throw line, 11 rebounds (5 offensive rebounds, 6 defensive rebounds), no assists, 1 steal, no blocks, 1 turnover, 2 personal fouls, and 7 points.

God,that was some disappointment ,trying to watch my first NCAA game. Never again ,unless Gonzaga goes all the way.
I am not going to comment regarding DSa ( how about that?) game because I never lasted past 10 minutes. But one thing I would like to mention is that he seems to be a very passionate guy . Skill and passion combined , well , that is quite rare nowadays where being a bb player is just another profession.

Sabonis aside,Karnowski looks half decent as well.He seems to have lost some weigh and gained some skills alongside.
