Considering Josh Childress has made enormous progress during the last two years in Europe, having improved his outside shot, court vision and basketball IQ. And considering Childress can easily be a starter in any NBA team at the moment. I think he can be a perfect tool for team USA during the WC in Turkey.

He knows how to play with international rules unlike any other American elite NBA player and posesses good athletic skills. Not to mention that he is unselfish and a great teamplayer. Something which team USA definately needs. He doesn't have to be the star of the team, but he can definately help more than some players on the previous roster could.

I say, Coach K should put this player on Team USA. After all, the game is going global. Why should every player of Team USA play in the NBA?

If Childress can dominate like this, it is quite scary to imagine what a real NBA star would do against the scrubs in Europe.

Although i agree on Childress' progress and the impact he would have as
a result of his experience in the FIBA game,i still think that Team USA
has better solutions at the 3 position,so my answer would have to be no.

I'm not sure how exactly their game would translate over here,
what kind of an impact would their overblown egos have
and what kind of a work ethic would they demonstrate.
To answer all these questions, however,we would have to examine each
case seperately,wouldn't we?
Bottom line is we can't form an opinion until we see one of them play
over here.

It's not only Childress. The USA team can collect enough quality players solely from Europe to win WC, as it was the case before dream team era. They have had players who dominated in Europe all the time.

I don't think Childress will be chosen now if Antony Parker for example wasn't in the past.

hell yeah james could domintate you just have to add 2 amaendments to fiba rules. allow the 4 step to the basket clause and allow the crab dribble

It was never the case, the USA teams pre-dream team were comprised by college players not by pros playing in Europe, the only time that happened was in 1998 and they ended 3rd in one of the weakest tournaments i can remember.
A team made by the Langdongs, Childresses and Batistes around is not enough to challenge even a Pau-less Spain or Argentina if they have a full squad, or Lithuania if they had all players committed (which is not the case but whatever)
It's been a while since we had a dominant american in Europe, Childress is not dominant, he's not even the best player in his team.

When I wrote it, I recalled a scene with W. Alexis from Alba in USA jersey, i didn't know it was the only time. Anyway, I don't agree with your belief that European-Americans are not enough to win WC. It's not sure of course but they can definitely win it.

No they can't. The logic is simple. Americans play in Europe because they are not good enough for NBA. Spain for example got many guys in NBA. So they are better. Way better.

The absence of NBA players that year was related with the NBA lockout.

Brandon Jennings, Darrell Armstrong, Mario Elie, Dominique Wilkins, Walter Berry, Bob McAdoo, etc. They played in Europe because they were not good enough for the NBA?

last i check, they are the defending olympic champion and are the favorite to win it all in the WC...so why bother adding him if you can have the core of the gold medal team

That's where problems start actually. I'm sure if Childress would be picked he would accept without even thinking. About the NBA stars there are huge doubts about their participation.

Because he understands the international game better than some of the current players on the squad. Like Tayshaun Prince for example.

They never won the WC. That American team was never good enough for the best international teams. Moreover, most International teams were not as good back then as they are now. Look at France for example. A team full of NBA players. Yet, struggling to come close to the medals.
I think that today's Chinese NT with Yao could get a medal in the 1998 WC.

Only if several people at the three spot decided not to play again, or if the highlighted choices to replace them decided not to sign on as well.

Like Dotch said the USA has a good thing going, and they should see who wants to play from the Redeem Team and the select team (those like Durant and Rose who trained with the Redeem team) before looking elsewhere.

I agree with this & would not mind Childress at all. And Tayshaun Prince is the guy who first came to mind before opening up this thread as far as similar skills. It is funny because as I watch the Reds play I begin to think of Josh as a European player, rather than a 'former NBA' player playing in Europe. Just like any other American who adapted like Scoonie Penn for example. I do not agree that J-Chill is easily a starter on all NBA teams though. :)

Now we are going off course. Where have you seen unselfishness & lack of of team play from USA? They have had a program of continuity since 2005 where they specifically recruit & train players to play together for at least 2/3 years, play the right way, & learn the international game. They have had such a program for a while now and surely do not 'need' a player simply because he has some Euroleague & A1 experience. Coach K will select the best players available. He would he a decent player, but his experience is exaggerated versus Elite NBA players (assuming you mean guys like the Redeem Teamers who have international experience dating back to 04/06..you know guys who are elite in the NBA like Paul, Williams, Howard something Childress was not and is not) imo it wouldn't even be that big of a bonus over a Kevin Durant who, as a member of the U.S select team, has been training with & against the Senior team, while learning FIBA rules since 2006. Durant is going be unleashed in Summer 2010. You thought Melo was versatile?..Durant is about to be a star. :)

Childress on Team USA is a good thought though. I would probably be leery of the Greek Lobby's influences though. He could spy & get back to Greek contacts, plus throw games :D

Damn, and I though I could fool you guys. You got me.:D

Didn't they already do this and NOT win the WC?
