BSN 2008: Signings, Rumors, Trade and News

Luis Rivas signs with the Crabbers, blast them!

Oh well, it's not like I'm gonna miss Rivas' tunrovers because of his tiny little hands! This opens up the oportunity for Florentino Valencia and Carlos Collazo to elevate their game, IMO, Valencia has a lot of potential and he is just 23 years old! He showed his game quality during the semi finals!

Coach Miguel Mercado died some days ago cuz a lung failure.
He was cremated yesterday.

Sammy Villegas goes to Carolina Gigantes
Ismael Caro signs with Ponce and is traded to Guayama Brujos for Wilfredo Pagan
Antonio "Puruco" Latimer signs with Ponce Leones
Bobby Lazor signs with San German Atleticos
"Cayito" Rivera signs with Arecibo Capitanes, but his signing is under investigation cuz alleged double contract
The BSN approved a new system, where the league will sign a group of latinamerican players. The players will go to a draft where every team will draft one of them. The salary will be payed by the league. Some of these players are:
Amaury Filion (Dominican Republic)
Marlon Martinez (Dominican Republic)
Adrian Uter (Jamaica)
Valentino Hart (Bahamas)
Kyle Neptune (Trinidad)
Shagari Alleyne (Trinidad)
Antonio "Toñito" Garcia (Panama)
Diego Guevarra (Venezuela)
Omar Quinteros (Mexico)
Victor Avila (Mexico)
Victor Mariscal (Mexico)
Adam Parada (Mexico)
Horacio Llamas (Mexico)
Christian Arias (Dominican Republic)
Julio Solano (Dominican Republic)

Close to joining the draft:
Jair Peralta (Panama)
Jaime Lloreda (Panama)
Hector "Pepito" Romero (Venezuela)
Martin Osimani (Uruguay)

Draft Order
1 - Grises de Humacao
2 - Indios de Mayagüez
3 - Conquistadores de Guaynabo
4 - Vaqueros de Bayamón
5 - Criollos de Caguas
6 - Atléticos de San Germán
7 - Gigantes de Carolina
8 - Leones de Ponce
9 - Brujos de Guayama
10 - Cariduros de Fajardo
11 - Capitanes de Arecibo
12 - Cangrejeros de Santurce

this means every team in the BSN with the exception of Santurce and Arecibo, will play with 3 imports. (a restricted import, a regular import and a communitary player)

Two questions:

-What does "restricted import" mean?
-Why can't Santurce and Arecibo use all three imports? It's because they are the defending finalists?

Now there are two leagues in Latin America using a slot for Latin imports (Venezuelan LNBP is the other); maybe this is a beginning trend that should really help basketball development in the whole continent, as much as having the Americas League.

Thanks for the updates, Jose.

Yes, I think it's a great move. It allows a good player from another league to play in a good league. But are players like Llamas and Quintero going to make the move? I suppose that since the Mexican leagues are always "shuffling" players around, they will. I mean, last year Quintero played in two or three different leagues...

I think it's a good option for Mexicans. They finish their league and then can begin playing in another fine competition. It even happened with a few Argentineans and Uruguayans in Venezuela, they signed there right after their teams were eliminated.

Restricted Import or "Refuerzo Restringuido" is an import which the team cant change after the first 30 days of the tournament.

The other import can be changed.

Puerto Rico always had only one import until some years ago when they decided to give an additional import to every team that didnt made the playoffs. After that, they can keep the right to have 2 imports. Since the rule was made, Arecibo and Santurce have not fallen out of the playoffs, so they still have right for only one import.

Quinteros will be in the draft. Problem is that some years ago he was going to sign with the Gallitos and the US didnt gave him the permission to work, so lets see what happens with him. Llamas was quoted on a newspaper very excited about playing in the BSN, even thought, I am not really optimistic about having him on any team :o

I don't remember Quinteros not getting a visa...that's strange. Usually these sports players get them faster than anybody. Unless he's gotten too fat, Llamas is still probably a good player. As long as somebody can roll him onto the court and carry him off in a wheelchair, he'll play good defense and get rebounds.

That's what's so great about international leagues: players get the chance to play all year long instead of having an 8 month vacation.

Omar Alvarado didn't accept the offer Caguas gave him. They offered him $225,000 for three years. Other teams interested in him are Bayamon, Ponce and San German.

Omar Alvarado signed with the Atleticos de San German. Los Criollos de Caguas received the rights of Samuel "Bimbi" Rosas, Mark Konecny and San German's 1st round pick in the 2008 BSN Draft.

Crap, I wanted Bayamón to sign him

Fajardo Cariduros sign PG Elisamuel Morales
Javier "Toñito" Colon signs with Ponce Leones for 1 year. He is looking forward to continue his streak of games missed at Carolina :D
San German Atleticos trade Joel Nieves to Humacao for Johwen Villegas
San German Atleticos trade SG Frank Lopez to Mayaguez Indios for PG Roberto Herrera
Caguas Criollos sign Bobby Brannen as an import.

Guillermo Diaz wont enter the BSN draft.
The BSN Draft will be hold this January 26, at the Guaynabo Sports Museum.

The BSN and the Jordan Brand reached an agreement were the Jordan Brand provides uniforms and clothes to the BSN teams and the National Teams for the next 5 years.
