Brazil commemorates its first world championship 50 years ago. The championsip was held in Chile and Brazil claimed gold with 5 wins and 1 loss in the final stage. The title was confirmed after a victory over the home team.
From the team only Edson Bispo, Jatyr Schall, Pedro Fonseca "Pecente", Waldyr Boccardo and Wlamir Marques are still alive. The other players were Amaury Pasos, Carmo de Souza "Rosa Branca" (passed away later last year), Zenny de Azevedo "Algodão", Waldemar Blatkauskas, José Senra "Zezinho", Otto da Nóbrega and Fernando Freitas and the coach was Togo Soares "Kanela".
Wlamir Marques and Amaury Pasos were the team's best players and considered for many the best Brazilian players ever.

Wlamir Marques and Amaury Pasos :) Some considered them better than Schmidt.

Yep, althought that's mainly inside the basketball circle and basketball fans, the majority of the population relates the word "basquete" to Oscar and Hortência (and in a small degree, Paula). Wlamir and Amaury never reached the "icon" status.

1959 world champion Edson Bispo (centre) died yesterday of a heart attack at 75.
