Bosnia & Herzegovina league and NT

Finally a huge night for Nurkic in offense. Those are rare for post-injury Nurk, his role is reduced to play good defense, fight for rebounds, make strong screens and let guards do the scoring part.

Musa is chosen for the December MVP of the Spanish league. In four games he averaged 27.3 points, 7 rebounds and 5.3 assists, and Breogan was 3-1 in those games. He's now leading scorer in the league.

Musa in December:

vs Bilbao 25 points, 1/8 for 3
vs Andorra 26 points, 4/6 for 3
vs Valencia 33 points, 4/7 for 3
vs Fuenlabrada 25 points, 3/5 for 3

His menager said that couple of big European clubs wants him, but added: „Although Dzanan is still only 22, he experienced a lot. Now he plays best basketball of his life, there's always a smile on his face, I don't think we should suddenly end that for whatever reason. Real miracle needs to happen for him to change the team before the end of season.“

I will name four 2003 – 2005 born BiH prospects who distinguished themselves so far, so relevant news from yesterday:

SPARS Sarajevo U18 team won a tournament in Hungary, in a final match they beat Lokomotiv Kuban 97 : 73. Top scorers: Zrno 24, Mulic 20 and Jovic 16(2005 born PF Filip Jovic is another good prospect, but reportedly he choose to play for Serbia).

1. Amsal Delalic, 03', SG, 6'7'', Igokea

He was couple of times in Igokea roster for the Champions League, but still has to make a debut for the first team. He plays for their affiliate team in 2nd rang in BiH. He shines in Adriatic league U19 for Igokea, where he averages 19.5 ppg, 4.5 apg and 2 spg.

Those who wrote scouting reports after last Adriatic league U19 tournament said about him: „does a little bit of everything“, „the best, not the most talented player at this tournament“, „shot the ball well from 3P line“, „very versatile and can play on positions from 1 to 3“, „able to make plays for teammates“, „doesn’t like playing through contacts that much“, „needs to improve body strength“.

2. Zinedin Mulic, 04', SF, 6'6'', SPARS

He is a similar to previous SPARS and BiH forward prospects in a way that he possess good physical profile, but unlike majority of them he isn't a regular deliver of bricks, there is some shoting potential in him.

Scouting reports about him: „athletic slasher“, „strong finisher, even through contact“, "good vertical“, „shot with a high and mechanically - sound release“, „very solid 1v1 defender“, „still has levels to reach as a ball – handler“.

3. Harun Zrno, 04', SF, 6'6'', SPARS

Strong body for his age, you can't never be sure does that mean that he just dominates his peers because he outmuscles them, or that he has a right body for transition in senior basketball.

Scouting reports: „excellent and confident spot – up shooter“, „decent frame“, „not explosive“, „lacks lateral quickness“.

4. Elmir Dzafic, 05', C, 6'11'', Buducnost Bijeljina.

He never played in Adidas NGT, Adriatic league U19 or BiH national teams(he would if championships were not postponed because of Covid), so he still isn't that well known, but he may turn into best player from this list.

Buducnost is a U16 champion of BiH, with Dzafic as leader, but more important he plays for Buducnost first team in 2nd rang in BiH, and recently in a win against Igokea's affiliate team he had 23 points and 13 rebounds. His highlights from that game:

Alibegovic recently had a 25 points carrer - high game for the Virtus.

Last night Garza had his second 20 points game in NBA

Now a Bosnian basketball executive Mirza Teletovic : Luka is for months in process for BiH passport. We're very close to finish the procedure. We will demand from FIBA that he and Alibegovic be treated as domestic players. It's complicated with rules and laws, but I hope for successful outcome.

With them our talent pool would look like this:

PG – Roberson, Adamovic, Pasalic, Talic, Campara

SG – Musa, Atic

SF – Gegic, Lazic

PF – Sulejmanovic, Alibegovic

C – Nurkic, Halilovic, Kamenjas, Garza

Positions 2, 3 and 4 would be locked.

On 5 there would be a tough decision which center to cut.

Real issue would be on position 1. Roberson is naturalized, more a shooter than a passer, and not that impactful in offense to ignore that he is a worst defender in rotation(listed as 180 cm, but even that seems generous). Pasalic and Filip Adamovic are post – prime(and they weren't exactly great even in prime). Campara have such a bad season that he is unplayable for national team(two DNP in the last window), and Talic struggles to get some playing time in Igokea.

I may overthink it, but with Alibegovic in the roster Lazic(who is a usefull 3 and D player, but Adriatic league level 3 and D player, and provides more D than 3) would not split his minutes on 4 and 3, he would turn into a full time small forward. That leaves more room to play Gegic on PG position.

In the last window for some periods we did play without a classic PG, we saw together on floor Gegic, Musa and Atic, and in that lineup it isn't possible to strictly differ PG, SG and SF.

Musa is tallest but softest, best ball handler but most unwillingly passer.

Atic is a above average rebounder, defender and passer for position if you count him as either SG of SF, but more often cold than hot as scorer.

Gegic is a SF who occasionally plays PG, even more tough and physical than Atic, but even less polished as scorer. Although, Atic tries to score by standard ways, with shots and drives, and often fails, Gegic find his ways, against Czech Republic he scored 20 and most of them were from offensive rebounds, 2 + 1 through contact, fast breaks, he scores by force, not by skills.

I finally have a whole picture how exactly are Amar Alibegovic and Luka Garza related. Refik Muftic, once a famous Bosnian football goalkeeper, had two daughters, Lejla and Sejla. Lejla married Teoman Alibegovic and is a mother of Amar. Sejla married American Frank Garza and is a mother of Luka.

Teoman Alibegovic statements on his son issues:

„Look at Amar's case. His parents are Bosnians, they were born in Bosnia, how can someone say that he isn't a Bosnian just because my carrer path led me abroad and because he was by destiny born in USA? He is the USA citizen just because he was born there, he never intended to play for any national team except BiH. And now he should suffer because he got BiH passport when he was 18 or 19, but not when he was 16? We will definitely make a case in FIBA, although they did already once considered his case. Same say it's possible(to make him domestic player), some say it's not, but let it be consider one more time by logic. If his both parents were born in BiH, if he speaks the language, never played for any other country...why is it so crucial at which age he got a passport? I understand that FIBA had to make some decisions, draw some lines, but is it fair that this will affect BiH the most of all ex – Yu countries? Only Bosnians and their children, who were forced to leave in a war and suffered the most, can't play for their country?“

„I belive that facts are on our side. Amar wants that we do this as family whole, that in cooperation with Basketball Federation and competent state organs we write a claim to FIBA, show all the facts and ask FIBA commission to answer us is it logical what we say. I will reveal to you that I had a talk about it with Kamil Novak, I know him from my playing days.“

„I know it's also a bad situation for national team coach, no one wants such a adversary, he must make decisions based on administrative things, not by player qualities. It sucks that Amar will be with the team only in the case of American play absence, and when play comes then there is no place for Amar, because there could be only one naturalized player in the team. I want to make clear that it's on coach to select or not to select a player, but it's bad when it's based on things outside of basketball. People see Amar's name on the national team list, and then they see that he isn't in the team, 90% of them don't understand what it's all about, why is it like that. Everyone asks why he doesn't play, because probably only a narrow circle of people is aware of naturalized players regulations, only sport workers and you, journalists.“

Last games from our Euro PF's and C's:

Kamenjas 27 minutes, 20 points, 12 rebounds v Partizan

Halilovic 28 minutes, 22 points, 9 rebounds v Paris

Alibegovic 23 minutes, 15 points, 6 rebounds v Treviso

Sulejmanovic 10 minutes, 5 points, 6 rebounds v Karsiyaka

By playing time, role and ppg in the club Sulejmanovic has worst season of all. In the national team in recent games he looked like best player of all, he was versatile scorer inside and he also shot 14/24 for 3 in last five games for BiH.

How can he by eye – test and stats be a terrific player in national team jersey, and in Tenerife jersey a player for contract termination? I have couple of possible explanations:

1. He looked great against Greece C, Czech Republic B, and Bulgaria without Vezenkov. He will be exposed against better PF's.

2. He is just in bad situation in club, he's better than that.

3. He's one of those players who are different when they put national team jersey.

I'm impressed with how Sulejmanovic talks with reporters in Bosnian, English and Spanish, and when in an interview Sasu Salin was asked how was it to have Teemu Rannikko for teammate in Olimpija Ljubljana he gave this answer:

„Definitely a role model, he always help me through my career. The chance to play together there was great for me. But he also enjoyed, it's pretty rare to have two Finns in same team. At the moment I also have Sulejmanovic, who is like half – Finn, we can talk everything in Finnish, and actually he played with me and Teemu in Ljubljana, so that was pretty great.“

Kamenjas will be a really good player. Excellent player in the making. Watched him against Partizan, he is still a little raw but when polished and in continous playing for a advanced team which should come from next season he will be one of better Ex-Yu centers. I am not sure whether he hasn't even higher ceiling than Nurkic.

Four positives and concerns eight months before Eurobasket:

POSITIVES

Musa is doing great in Spain.

He will probably end a season as top scorer of Spanish league, and then sign for some club from Euroleague. Our entire ambitions rely on healthy, happy and in form Musa, and it seems we will get it.

BiH national team is perfect for him. His swag, cockiness and star of the team playstyle may be a tough fit for a team that have couple of NBA and Euroleague scorers, but description „good team player, but in 5 on 5 offense lost as fish out of water“ suits pretty much every BiH player who isn't Musa on positions 2 and 3, he comes as savior to them. He's a Shved surrounded by a bunch of Kurbanov's.

He proved that he can do it against team from Euroleague

Defensive potential

When I watch post match interviews of recent opponents we beat, they normally say that it was hard to play against a physical team that have tall, aggressive and athletic players. I think that Lazic, Atic and Gegic are primary trio that gives to our game that element of toughness. All three of them are able to play good defense against both guards and forwards, and if there is a much to be desired in their offensive talent, their defensive tools are on point.

Add to them Nurkic who is considered a good defensive center in NBA, and that defense can be a problem for opponents.

But we also have to acknowledge that Roberson and Musa, our best scorers on positions 1 and 2, are below average defenders.

This team is well coached

It is maybe too early to tell, but Vedran Bosnic may be my favourite national team coach ever. He's young and energetic, but he isn't typical always angry and red in face coach from Balkan. He tries to be a buddy to players, he yells on timeouts but doesn't insult them;) Seems like players really love to play for him.

When he talks for media he is always like: „If we try to rely on our individual quality in offense, well we will fail, we don't have that enough. What we need is to work hard in defense, try to run the floor well, on 5 on 5 offense we need to play as a team and share the ball. In that case we can put a fight against anyone.“

We may have huge support

As like half of Bosnia and Herzegovina works in Germany, and there are daily flights and bus rides between two countries, I expect thousands of our fans on our games.

CONCERNS

Point Guard is a weak spot

I'm not even that satisfied with naturalized Roberson, and he is way better than our avilable domestic point guards.

There is nothing that implies that experienced Nemanja Gordic will return to national team, and 90% he will not, but that would solve a lot of our problems. He averages 12.1 ppg and 4.7 apg in Adriatic league, and is still good enough to be a starting PG for any Adriatic league team that is not Zvezda/Partizan/Buducnost/Cedevita Olimpija. But those are unfortunately just dreams, he will not play for BiH ever again.

Although we aren't truly deep, we literally just need to win Alibegovic case and we would have two good enough players on every position from 2 to 5, but on 1 we hardly have one.

End of our bench may be terrible even for end of the bench

Players like Campara or Vrabac have realistic chances to be in final roster for the Eurobasket, and it botters me to have someone like them even as 12th player. There we will compete against nations in which they wouldn't make a list of 100 best active players.

Shooting is an issue

This team is brickesque, we know it, other know it about us. I expect that we will be one of the worst teams in the tournament by total 3 – point shoot made, and by free throws percentage.

For years we lack pure shooter on SG position, Biberovic seemed like that guy, but then he decided to become Turkish.

Teletovic made a joke that if Bosnic needs him he is available for Eurobasket. He actually does play recreationally for a team in Bosnian 2nd league, and he just scored 34 against one of the better teams from top division in a cup game, so I wonder was it truly just a joke or he wants his own Last Dance:confused:

We are in terrible group

All players may commit and be healthy, we may play good, and we still could lose well played games in this group. It's not really necessary that we be bad to lose.

For years we lack pure shooter on SG position, Biberovic seemed like that guy, but then he decided to become Turkish.

He turned down the invitation of the U18 NT of Bosnia and H. 3 years ago but he still has the Bosnian citizenship. He will turn 21 in one month and can decide for which NT he is gonna play. He was a hell of a talent. Never a good defender not even in the youth but he was a good creator for himself out of pick and roll. His handling got worse and now he is just a shooter from catch and shoot, still very young though. I wish you good luck in Eurobasket 22

Maybe I should revise my impression that BiH will be bottom four teams in Eurobasket by total 3 - point shots made. Let's look percentage of this lineup:

PG Roberson, 42.3% in French league

SG Musa, 44.3% in Spanish league

SF Lazic, 37.7% in Adriatic league

PF Alibegovic, 48.8% in Italian league

C Nurkic, 20.9% in NBA

Range team BiH;)

It still stands that we may be worst team by free throws %. Kamenjas 61.4%, Halilovic 47.4%, Sulejmanovic 69.2%. They are at least big men, but what excuse is for Atic(7/14 in Eurocup) and Gegic(62.2%)

Kamenjas highlights vs Partizan
https://www.instagram.com/p/CY3jJGPoc-h/

Even though some like coach Ivan Rudez have really high opinion on him, with the Halilovic in the roster he was nothing more than a reserve center. Kamenjas played only 15 minutes vs Czech Republic and 12 minutes vs Bulgaria.

While we still have plenty options on C position, here are some young centers with lesser known connections to BiH:

Baylee Steele(97').

As much as he know he was just ordinary American with American dad and American mom, but later he was told that his father is a Bosnian who spent couple of years in college in USA and then made returne to BiH. As he made decision to leave USA, and Baylee's mom to stay, that ended their relationship.

Baylee, then in fifth grade, had been informed that Brian Steele was actually his adoptive father. His biological father is Munib Dzuho, a former Northern Iowa basketball player living with a family of his own in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Steeles couldn't keep the secret much longer. Baylee was growing up.

"I was always the big kid," he said. "Then I found out why.

Seems like he embraced his Bosnian origins, and probably would like to play for the national team if there is a opportunity, but we are already in mess with Alibegovic and Garza, focus is on them, Steele name was never seriously considered.

ste-jpg.png

Alen Smailagic(00').

Bosnian article from 2019 about Partizan and Serbian national team PF/C:

"Smailagic is born in Belgrade, but his parents are Bosniaks from Tutin, and it can be heard that he may play for the Bosnia and Herzegovina."
https://www.klix.ba/sport/kosarka/p...erogodisnji-ugovor-s-golden-stateom/190713003

Haris Bratanovic(01').

He was born in Belgium, and he plays for Oostende and Belgium national team, but his parents are from BiH. He averages 8.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg in Basketball Champions league.

Cibona - SC Derby 90 : 75

Gegic 29:18 min, 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals.

Kamenjas 29:52 min, 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot.

Teammates from national team didn't disappointed. Just in last season they played together for the SPARS in the ABA league 2, and now they are great in enormly stronger competition in ABA league.

If Alibegovic become an not – naturalized(which is unlikely, I don't trust FIBA and I don't have faith in capacities of our Federation) and nothing else changes with the other players who theoretically may reinforce the team those are my twelf men for the Eurobasket:

PG John Roberson 5'10'' Strasbourg 1988

PG Filip Adamovic 5'11'' Rouen 1988

PG/SG Muhamed Pasalic 6'3'' Mons 1987

SG Dzanan Musa 6'9'' Breogan 1999

SG/SF Edin Atic 6'7'' Buducnost 1997

SF/PG Amar Gegic 6'7'' Cibona 1998

SF/PF Aleksandar Lazic 6'8'' Mornar 1996

PF Amar Alibegovic 6'8'' Virtus 1995

PF Emir Sulejmanovic 6'9'' Tenerife 1995

C Jusuf Nurkic 7'0'' Portland 1994

C Miralem Halilovic 6'10'' Metropolitans 1991

C Kenan Kamenjas 6'10'' SC Derby 2000

13th man: PG Darko Talic 6'2'' Igokea 1998

One can't never underestimate Vrabac's ability to sneak into national team, and Campara is just one or two withdraws away from being in team for the Eurobasket, which is equally terrifying.

Couple of news from the last week:

1. In the last two rounds of Adriatic league Cibona won by huge margin against two worst teams in the league, and Gegic was sensational:

v Split 27 min, 24 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast.
v Krka 29 min, 22 pts, 9 reb, 6 ast.

Not bad for a guy who scores a lot by grit and grind, he isn't the most technical player or sharp shooter.

2. John Roberson will undergo knee surgery and it's expected that he will be out for 3-4 months. That probably means that Alibegovic will play for the national team in the meantime, at least as naturalized player.

3. Nurkic was very vocal about that his wish is to stay in Portland, to sign a new contract with them, and once he felt relief becauce he found out they won't trade him, he celebrated it with a great performance in a win against Lakers.

Best BiH players by year born from 2000 to 2005:

2000 Kenan Kamenjas

Last season he was MVP of the Adriatic league 2, and now in his first season he is in the MVP conversations in the Adriatic league. It's crazy that you can describe him as undersized center(207,5 cm) with average athleticism who doesn't shot, and yet he is still so good that he regularly gets double teamed. He's smart, quick, deadly in pick and roll situations, skilled finisher around the rim, capable passer and outmuscled by no one. His last game in the Adriatic league: 28 min, 15 pts(6/8 FG), 9 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl. After he adjusted for the higher level of basketball those numbers became just another day at the office for him.

2001 Kosta Kondic

Combo guard just scored 20 points in 22 minutes for the Borac Banja Luka in the Adriatic league 2. He is under contract with Igokea, but on loan. Given the state of depth in the national team on the positions that he covers he isn't that far, far away from the national team, he just needs one step more. If you are a guard and there is a Adriatic league team that will let you play 15 mpg you are national team candidate.

2002 Aleksa Gataric

Couple of years ago him and Alem Huseinovic made a fun backcourt duo that led BiH 16 national team to the 2nd place in the U16 European championship of the B division. Huseinovic was a good shooter but got lost in the college basketball, last time I heard abut him it was that he is now a popular TikToker;) Gataric struggles with injuries, he misses too many games. He's now in Spars where he doesn't play much, and still has to prove that he can contribute on the Adriatic league 2 level.

2003 Amsal Delalic

He did play in very limited time in the Champions league and Adriatic league, but physically still seems unready to contribute on that level for the Igokea. We still don't know what kind of player he is, in youth basketball he is a 2 meters tall PG/SG/SF. Igokea invests in him, they have a plan for him, they count that he will play, that they will earn money from his transfer, so let's wait to see his status in the next season.

2004 Zinedin Mulic

He's fine, but athletic SF of his age who isn't a worst shooter should already play for the Spars first team in the Adriatic league 2, or at least in the Bosnian league, but instead he plays for their affiliate in the lower Bosnian leagues.

2005 Elmir Dzafic

He just had 25 min, 16 pts and 10 reb game in Bosnian 2nd division, and this entire season he competes successfully against adult men in that league. I really think he would absolutely dominate against his own age group for the BiH national team, he is a legit center, you can't defend him with a 6'8'' center, or with a 7 footer who is skinny, soft and moves weird, and most of the teams in the summer tournaments play with such.

All players with 14 ppg or more in Adriatic league:

Shannon Shorter 18.57
Kyle Vinales 17.75
Rok Stipcevic 16.89
Jones Bryce 14.61
Nevels Garrett 14.4
Amar Gegic 14.18
Justin Carter 14.17
Jaka Blazic 14

It's unexpected because Gegic was known for his defense, playmaking and rebounding, but not as scorer. In this young Cibona team players like Gnjidic, Prkacin and Brankovic are even more inexperienced than him, so he had to step up, but it's still surprising how much he scores.

Go get them:mad:

Those players attend practices for the upcoming games, I separated those who are on the practices just to be cut/DNP in the end.

PG Darko Talic 6'2'' Igokea 1998
PG/SG Muhamed Pasalic 6'3'' Mons 1987
SG Dzanan Musa 6'9'' Breogan 1999
SG/SF Edin Atic 6'7'' Buducnost 1997
SF/PG Amar Gegic 6'7'' Cibona 1998
SF Adin Vrabac 6'8'' Vienna 1994
SF/PF Aleksandar Lazic 6'8'' Mornar 1996
PF Amar Alibegovic 6'8'' Virtus 1995
PF Emir Sulejmanovic 6'9'' Tenerife 1995
C Miralem Halilovic 6'10'' Metropolitans 1991
C Kenan Kamenjas 6'10'' SC Derby 2000

PG Sani Campara 6'0'' Split 1999
SF Haris Delalic 6'8'' Sloboda Tuzla 1994
PF/C Ajdin Penava 6'11'' Mons 1997
PF/C Djordje Topolovic 6'9'' Osijek 2001
C Ismet Sejfic 6'10'' Podgorica 1993

Bosnia has stronger roster than Serbia and Croatia for upcoming window. This is a very good team.
