My 10 favorite sci-fi movie are(in no particular order):
Other candidates for me: "Capricorn One" (1978), "The Day After" (1981), "Akira" (1988), "Star Trek" (1979)
If "Twilight Zone" episodes could be included as movies, every single episode would be listed.
I think most people here would enjoy "Children of Men." It's an incredible movie. In my opinion, it's the best movie since "Blade Runner." It's so intense, plausible (very important for sci-fi, imo), and just very well done. Anybody else seen it?
- "Children of Men" (2006) -- most importantly this movie is relevant and plausible, with great directing and acting, perhaps the most intense movie I've ever seen
- "Planet of the Apes" (1968) -- it's been parodied many times, but it was amazing the first time I saw it and remains a wonderful movie
- "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) -- great, great, great sci-fi until the fantasy ending - sure, I get it, we transcend humanity, but it was poorly done
- "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982) -- good story-telling
- "Westworld" (1973) -- again, a good story with a good premise
- "Gattaca" (1997) -- plausible with good acting and great pacing
- "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) -- it's also a relevant and intense movie with a great message
- "The Manchurian Candidate" (1963) -- very well done paranoia
- "Blade Runner" (1982) -- for me, it created a new way of thinking about sci-fi
- "Testament" -- (1983) -- the first movie that made me think about domesticity in the future
