My 10 favorite sci-fi movie are(in no particular order):
  • "Children of Men" (2006) -- most importantly this movie is relevant and plausible, with great directing and acting, perhaps the most intense movie I've ever seen
  • "Planet of the Apes" (1968) -- it's been parodied many times, but it was amazing the first time I saw it and remains a wonderful movie
  • "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) -- great, great, great sci-fi until the fantasy ending - sure, I get it, we transcend humanity, but it was poorly done
  • "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982) -- good story-telling
  • "Westworld" (1973) -- again, a good story with a good premise
  • "Gattaca" (1997) -- plausible with good acting and great pacing
  • "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) -- it's also a relevant and intense movie with a great message
  • "The Manchurian Candidate" (1963) -- very well done paranoia
  • "Blade Runner" (1982) -- for me, it created a new way of thinking about sci-fi
  • "Testament" -- (1983) -- the first movie that made me think about domesticity in the future

Other candidates for me: "Capricorn One" (1978), "The Day After" (1981), "Akira" (1988), "Star Trek" (1979)

If "Twilight Zone" episodes could be included as movies, every single episode would be listed.

I think most people here would enjoy "Children of Men." It's an incredible movie. In my opinion, it's the best movie since "Blade Runner." It's so intense, plausible (very important for sci-fi, imo), and just very well done. Anybody else seen it?

I seen it. It was good.

I've also seen some of the other ones you mentioned. I'm not a big sci-fi fan anyway but i think Children of Men does not exactly fit in the same category with Star Trek for example.

One of my favorite genres. Let's see (though i'm sure i'm gonna forget some):

from the top of my head and in no particular order:

Blade Runner
Alien 1
Alien 3
Gattaca
Brazil
Starship Troopers
Star Wars 4-6
Terminator 1
Terminator 2
Metropolis
Matrix
2001
12 Monkeys
Stargate
Planet of the Apes ('68)

gonna be back with some more later

How can someone not mention the Star Wars saga?

The greatest story ever!

In no particular order

Star Wars

Blade Runner

Aliens 2

Predator

Serenity<--you need to watch the tv series that FOX had to F**kin cancel...Firefly<--best tv series ever; that dealt more with inner humanity compared to anything else.

A Clockwork Orange (if it is considered sci-fi)

Matrix

Independence Day

Akira

DONNIE DARKO

Back to the Future

Children of men;
Minority Report;
The Island;
Aliens (All 4 movies);
Predator (Both);
AVP;
Phenomen;
Back to the Future (I,II);
Stargate;
Planet of the Apes;
...
The list is bigger but I cant remember all

Donnie Darko, Back to the future, matrix, batman (sort of SciFi), the thing, flash gordon, x men (1,2,3)

Nice. Some of my favourites that hadn't been mentioned in this thread:
- Stalker (1979)
- Solyaris (1972)
- Twelve Monkeys (1995) [Edit: qiangdade had mentioned it, sorry]
- La cité des enfants perdus (1995)
- Mad Max 2 (1981) (The Road Warrior)

And check this list, you may discover some underrated flicks:

Finally, if you're really into the freaky, cult, weird films, check The man who saves the world (1982) (aka Turkish Star Wars)
A review; Movie with english subs at Google Video.

No, it doesn't fit with Star Trek, but it's still speculative fiction set in the future, so I consider it sci-fi. It's a wonderful, wonderful movie.

"Firefly" was a good show. I don't know why it was cut. The movie was OK, but the show was more fun.

Test: I thought "The Island" was pretty week. The idea was wonderful, absolutely wonderful, but the last hour of the movie where the characters are running around in regular Earth was just bad. "Back to the Future" is just classic though.

I'm certainly going to look up "Kin-Dza-Dza." I read about it a long time ago and wasn't really interested. But after watching a little on-line with LuDux's link, I think I'll see if my library has a copy. I'm also going to look up "Stalker," which Rind mentioned. So much good sci-fi comes out of Europe but never plays in North America. I still haven't seen the original "Solaris." I saw George Cloney's new version, which was very good, but I'm sure they original was better.

Rind: I enjoyed going through that list of the 50 Greatest Dystopian Movies. It's basically a list of all the dystopian movies out there!

Some good movies mentioned in there.

Sin City was nice although the same guys let me down a bit with the 300 movie.

Predator was great, never get tired of watching that.

I like all the Gangster stuff, all the classics like Scarface, Casino, Godfather, and my all time favourite is Carlito's way.

Other than that Braveheart is one of my Favourites for obvious reasons.

Quite like most of the Denzil Washington Movies and Johnny Depp Movies.

Oh and another classic is trainspotting with the follow up Acid House if anyones saw that, the bit where the baby is talking and saying in Scottish slang " gon geeze a wee suck aye yur tit in that" makes me laugh everytime.:cool:

guys guys, let me tell you someting. i am so friggin trashed right nwo from 4 bottles of of somethings and somerthing. fukv man!

Langers boi!

I'm not the biggest sci-fi fan but Donnie Darko and
children for men were amazing, I also really liked
starship troopers when it first came out. Not sure
if these are really science fiction but when thinking
about movies that were at least semi-sci-fi and that
i really enjoyed i could only think of Battle royale and
The Host.

Other films mentioned in this thread that i really want to see:
Akira
A Clockwork Orange
La Cité des enfants perdus
Metropolis

Post of the year!!!:D :D :D LMMFAO!!!

and very relevant too

now i can elaborate a bit on my list:

Blade Runner (one of the best scifi and noir movies of all time at the same time)
Alien 1 (awsum, just awsum)
Alien 3 (Fincher showing what he is capable of atmosphere-wise)
Gattaca (though not really scifi but rather philosofical and imo very likely to happen kinda future. Music by michael nyman and the costumes gave a huge boost to an already great story)
Brazil ( maybe the top director in creating atmosphere in a movie. huge story)
Starship Troopers (don't really know why, the movie has a great rhythm and if you are willing you can find all the anti-american and anti fascist elements in this one)
Star Wars 4-6 (no comment)
Terminator 1 (cameron at his best. huuuge story and directing and music and...)
Terminator 2 (ecqual to the first part for the same reasons)
Metropolis ( almost 100 years old but still current!!!)
Matrix (more than scifi imo, must have derived from philosophy. Creation was video-gamey but still)
2001 (oh, well. not my favorite but still great)
12 Monkeys (got goosebumbs when i saw it. just great)
Stargate (started my fav schifi story of all time: stargate sg1 the series. And atlantis on top of that)
Planet of the Apes ('68) (way better than burton's and falls in the category of schifi/philosophical movies that i just adore)

Ah! All movies based on philip k. dick books are also in my list. you probably know which they are...

I think we've all been drunk and surfing this site at one time or another. If not, we're not really human. :D :D I love Phantim. I wish he'd come play basketball with me. :D :D
Blade Runner (one of the best scifi and noir movies of all time at the same time)
I agree. Not only is the story fantastic (Dick, as you said), but the style is amazing. I've never seen a movie like it. And what wonderful music!!
Alien 1 (awsum, just awsum)
Alien 3 (Fincher showing what he is capable of atmosphere-wise)
Alien 1 I agree with, but I didn't like the other movies.
Metropolis ( almost 100 years old but still current!!!)
I really struggled with whether or not to put this in my list. I decided against it. The movie is good, very good, and the movie is no doubt a landmark in film and politics...but...I hate to say this, but I don't know, compared to any recent sci-fi, it's just too unsophisticated. On the other hand, it's still got style, plausibility, and politics. So...I guess it should be on the list.
Ah! All movies based on philip k. dick books are also in my list. you probably know which they are...
I also really like Dick, but I haven't read as much of his work as I should. His books weaves speculation and stories so well that anything loosely based on his stories comes out well. Not even Spielberg could destroy "Minority Report."

Most directors (except ridley scott) have a foul aproach on dick's stories, trying to pack them with action (total recall, minority report, impostor, paycheck) and focusing less on the troubled issues where you cannot really choose what's right or wrong. Yet the films come out to be at least descent and interesting even if they could probably be better.

Someone's watched Solaris?, I mean the 2002 version, not the soviet one from the 70's. I've recently read the book and I'm interested about the film. If someone has seen it, please tell me if its good enough.
