With the origination of The National Basketball Association from the United States a lot of youth have become attracted to the game around the world. Basketball training is provided worldwide in schools and recreation leagues. If you or perhaps your child wants to become involved in this game, it is recommended you know how to start training. I can give some tips on how to increase your vertical. Increasing my vertical and other players vertical is what I like to do in my spare time. I love the idea of dunking and being able to help players achieve their dream of dunking. The best exercises to dunk are plyometrics exercises in my opinion. Some good examples of these exercises are...

1. Sprints
2. Box jumps
3. Calf raises
4. Hill sprints

To add to the tips:

1. When dribbling a basketball keep your head up and face forward, avoid looking down.

2. Bounce the ball a little harder than you would in-game (I would probably advise against this for younger kids since the risk of getting hurt such as jamming a finger is higher).

3. Maintain an athletic position (slightly squat down with feet roughly shoulder-width apart).

These are pretty general tips but they can make a massive difference. With dribbling, you want to face forward and avoid looking at the basketball as it forces your intuition and muscle memory to take over. This proves extremely important in-game where at all times you're going to want to maintain a visual on the court to watch out for impending defensive players.

Bouncing the ball a little harder during practice is done to push you out of your comfort zone so that you adapt to dribbling hard. This is done so that when game time arrives and you scale back the intensity of your dribble, suddenly it seems a lot easier to dribble the basketball that perhaps it did previously (this is basically a "practice harder than you play" scenario and it works wonders with developing handles).

Maintaining your athletic position is a bit obvious, but keeping yourself in that kinetic position allows for not only a quicker reaction time but also a heightened awareness of everything going on in the game. You react faster to everything, whether it be a pass, a block, or an open shot. That makes this advice, although simple on paper, priceless when implemented in-game.

As for dribbling drills, I'll refer back to an article that mentions various different drills, but I'd say focus on the fundamentals (crossovers in front, between the legs, and behind the back, pullbacks, and pound dribbles). It's in getting the basic down that you'll see the most success on the court since they can easily be used at your convenience and are effective enough to maneuver across the entire court.

Also for dunking in specific, I think there's a lot to be said for jump training, which can not only help in learning to dunk but also grant a player increased athleticism which will easily put a player a cut above the rest. This page offers a great explanation on how to go about improving jump height, but in summary, it's a case of developing the proper jumping form, and training through the use of both plyometric and weight training exercises.

Basketball is super cool and getting better at it is awesome! You gotta practice a lot to improve, dude. Start with basic stuff like dribbling with both hands and practicing different kinds of passes with a friend. Oh, and using a smaller basketball if you're younger can help you get better control.
