AUS - Dellavedova contends for spot with Boomers

PORTLAND (Olympics) - When it comes to staying mentally tough in basketball games, Australian guard Matthew Dellavedova has an advantage.

The 21-year-old, a player with the Saint Mary's Gaels in California, is majoring in psychology and has a very impressive 3.61 grade point average that has earned him a spot on the Academic All-America Division I Men's Basketball Team.

Dellavedova is the first Saint Mary's men's basketball player to claim first-team Academic All-America honors.

St Mary's fans, and all of those fans Down Under who are keeping tabs on the latest Aussie to hit it big in American college basketball, are mostly paying attention to Dellavedova's work on the basketball court.

He helped Australia win the 2011 Oceania Championship to book a place at the London Games and is firmly in contention for a place in the Boomers' Olympic squad.

Dellavedova had 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals on Thursday night in a 70-43 rout of Portland that clinched at least a share of first place of the West Coast Conference title for the Gaels.

The Maryborough native is averaging 15.5 points and 6.4 assists per game and is proving to be indispensible for Gaels coach Randy Bennett.

"Matthew is a tremendous leader and a great role model," Bennett said.

"He has an outstanding work ethic, both on and off the court, and simply expects to do the little things that set him apart from others.

"He makes a really positive impact on everyone around him."

Done for season, Andrew Bogut hopes to play in Olympics

Warriors fans are eager to see new center Andrew Bogut on the court. But now that he has ruled himself out for the rest of the season, they’d just as soon that performance come next fall in training camp rather than in the summer at the London Olympics.

Bogut, who broke his left ankle in January, had held out hope of returning for the playoffs in April or May. That was before the Milwaukee Bucks traded him to Golden State.

But with the Warriors hopelessly out of playoff contention, the big guy told reporters this week that, while his recovery is on schedule, he will not play again this season.

“The most important thing is to get the bone right,” Bogut told the San Francisco Chronicle on the eve of Saturday’s 111-108 home win over Sacramento. “If I come back at 99 percent, and the bone is unsettled, and something shards off, I’m in big trouble.

“It would be nice to play this season, but it’s not going to happen.”

Bogut, a veteran of the 2004 and ’08 Olympics, remains hopeful of completing the hat trick in London this July. On the surface, the Warriors couldn’t have been happy to hear that.

But the 7-foot, 260-pound Australian assured his new fans he’s not going to do anything to jeopardize his NBA career.

“I wanted to play this season, and following that up with missing the Olympics would be really tough,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest things you can be involved with in our sport, but I’ve got to think about this franchise and what they’ve invested in me.

“I’ve got to treat the Olympics with the respect it deserves and be fair to the fans in Australia. But if I’m not 110 percent, I’m not going to play.”

The Boomers have three exhibition games against the Greek national team in June 24 (Hisense Arena), June 25 (State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South), and June 27 (The Arena, Geelong).
 
Basketball in need of an assist

BASKETBALL Australia wants a share of the funding pie dished out to its soccer counterparts - and is prepared to flex its political muscle to get it.

BA chairman Kristina Keneally, the former NSW premier, warned basketball risked a slide in national prominence similar to that suffered by tennis if the sport's infrastructure was not protected and enhanced.

She renewed her call for more equitable funding for other sports after an $8 million Federal Government injection for soccer in western Sydney, tied with the announcement of the region's new A-League team on Wednesday.

"This sort of major expenditure cannot continually be made on behalf of a select few sports at the expense of other high-participation codes," Keneally said.

"I welcome commitment of funding from the Commonwealth to sport ... that's fantastic and good on Football (Federation) Australia for getting that.

"But the point needs to be made that we in BA see, time and again, money coming into the FFA and money that doesn't seem to be available to our sport, or indeed other sports," she told SEN.

"And I think it's valid that we raise those questions."

She said television audiences and attendance at NBL and WNBL competitions was up and that Australia remained one of the world's top five basketball nations.

"Basketball for a very long time has been a very modest over-achiever (that) posts spectacular results internationally and has very highly regarded (domestic) competitions," she said.

"We've got some constraints on our game - we could grow it with more infrastructure, more courts, better venues for our NBL and WNBL teams to play in.

"That's the place where the Commonwealth Government could make a difference.

"We're a big sport, we post big success, particularly internationally, and we need to make our presence felt on the political court."

Keneally praised FFA boss Frank Lowy's boardroom clout, saying he had helped put soccer in the Australian sporting conscience.

"Frank's a great and passionate advocate for soccer ... and (he) has the ability to pick up the phone and speak to whoever he needs to speak to," she said.

"But it's a case that if you want to get funding that's outside the scope of normal Australian Sports Commission funding ... you need to be constantly in the face of government and putting that case forward.

''We need to start putting some hard data in front of government and making our case about the shortfall in infrastructure, particularly courts and venues.

"Courts are not as easily available as they were in the past and I make an analogy to tennis.

"The landscape of Australian suburbs used to be dotted with tennis courts and kids could just rock up and play. Those are disappearing, or you're paying council or hire charges and kids don't have access.

"And you'd have to say our results internationally haven't been as strong in recent years.

"I don't want to see basketball courts ... disappear or become unavailable."

It seems that Ater Majok is not a candidate for the final lineup in the London Olympics. But head coach Brett Brown said that Majok still has a chance with the team in 2013 for the qualifiers for the basketball world cup and in 2015, for the qualifiers for the Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

Also, Majok said in an interview with the Herald Sun that he plans to skip the Boomers invitation for the olympics preparation due to him planning to play in the NBA D-League.

The strength of this squad is definitely the experience and the size of the front court.

Though Australia's best player is not able to put on the Green and Gold, NBA Assistant - Brett Brown has more than enough fire power in the post to drive the Boomers to their first ever, Olympic Medal in Men's Basketball.
 
San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills said in an interview with Spurs Express that he is on the best shape of his life heading into the deeper playoff settings and eventually the London Olympics.
 
Boomers to host China in WA

The Australian Boomers will take on Team China in three exciting international basketball matches in Western Australia in the lead up to the London Olympics.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the two teams would face off as part of the YouYi Games international series, which was returning to WA for the second year.

Dr Hames said it would be the only chance for Aussie basketball fans to see their heroes in action against China in Australia this year.

“The YouYi Games are a unique feature of WA’s diverse events calendar, and this year they will see the Australian and Chinese national men’s teams play in Perth and Albany,” he said.

“Australia and China are ranked nine and 10 in the world respectively and have drawn the same group for the Olympic competition, so these three matches will be a crucial part of the pre-Olympic preparation for both sides.”

The Minister said the Perth matches would be broadcast into China via CCTV, across Australia on Fox Sports and throughout WA on WIN and Channel 9.

“The YouYi Games offers West Australians the chance to see a great sporting contest in the lead up to the London Olympics as well as creating great exposure for WA in one of our key tourism markets, China,” he said.

The first match in the series will be played at Perth’s Challenge Stadium on Saturday June 9. The teams will then travel to Albany for the second match on Monday June 11 and return to Perth on Wednesday June 13 for the final match at Challenge Stadium.

Dr Hames said the State Government, through Eventscorp, was proud to support the YouYi Games.

The Boomers have two more days before the YouYi games against the visiting Chinese national team. Boomers will practice tonight.
