ARANETA COLISEUM (the BIG DOME) Philippines

Construction of the Araneta Coliseum was started in 1957 and finished in late 1959. In 1960 to 1963, the Coliseum received international recognition as the "Biggest covered coliseum in the world". Even today, it still remains as one of the largest clear span domes in the world and the largest indoor facility in Southeast Asia with a dome diameter of 108 meters. It occupies a total land area of almost 40,000 square metres and has a floor area or 2,300 square metres.

The coliseum opened on March 16, 1960, with Gabriel "Flash" Elorde boxing for the World Junior Lightweight crown from American Harold Gomes. More than 33,000 spectators watched the contest. General admission then was 80 centavos and reserve section was five pesos.

seating capacity (basketball event only; paying patron): 15,000

NBA in joint venture to build arenas in China
10/13/2008 | 02:08 PM

LONDON – The National Basketball Association (NBA) has formed a joint venture with Anschutz Entertainment Group to design and develop multipurpose, NBA-style arenas in major Chinese cities.

The official announcement of the partnership was to be made later Sunday at the O2 Arena in London, where the New Jersey Nets and Miami Heat were to play a preseason game. AEG runs the O2.

"The partnership will manage booking and marketing of a wide variety of events including basketball and other sports events, concerts, family shows, cultural events, trade shows/conventions, and various live entertainment performances," the NBA said in a statement given to The Associated Press ahead of the announcement.

The venture will be equally owned by the two parties, the NBA said.

NBA commissioner David Stern has been looking to increase the league's marketability overseas for several years, and teams are touring Europe for the third straight preseason.

On Friday, Stern said the NBA was "an arena closer" to European expansion because of the O2 World in Berlin, which will host a preseason game between the New Orleans Hornets and the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

The development of the same type of arenas in China is an indication that Stern wants to see more NBA teams playing outside the United States and Canada, but he has been hesitant to say if the games will be competitive.

"Right now we're still using the friendlies (exhibition) model," Stern said Friday, adding the league was also far from playing an NBA All-Star game abroad. "It's nice to talk about, but logistically it's not a practical thing."

The statement did not say in which cities the new arenas would be built, but they will be constructed with other amenities.

"Where feasible, the arenas will be developed in conjunction with surrounding cultural and entertainment districts potentially comprised of restaurants, retail outlets, cinemas, hotels, residential areas, sports training facilities and smaller live entertainment venues," the NBA said.

Besides numerous restaurants and a movie theater, David Beckham's football academy is nearby the O2 in London.

The NBA has a huge fan base in China, and Houston Rockets center Yao Ming was one of the biggest stars of this year's Beijing Olympics.

"The NBA currently has relationships with 51 Chinese telecasters, including a partnership of more than 20 years with national broadcaster CCTV," the NBA says. – AP

^^ NBA is slowly being a fan of China.

Not really, NBA is after China's huge market for basketball fans and everything about China is huge, 160 cities with population of more than 1 million that is why the NBA can't stop salivating.

To David Stern, China represents a vast windfall. Basketball was introduced in China in 1895, when the YMCA opened a branch. But it didn't take off until the NBA began its marketing pitch. The NBA first set up a China office in 1988. Now, it has 100 employees based in China alone.

Stern's hope would be to absorb the Chinese Basketball League into the NBA, make China the model, and someday have franchises playing all over the four corners of the globe.

Today, at local parks, basketball courts stand next to ping-pong tables (table tennis) and people wait in line to play pick-up games. A temporary court was even set up inside the gates of the Forbidden City so security guards could take an exercise break. They got game!

China, a nation of smokers, is quickly becoming fitness-conscious, and building more courts is a major priority. Indoor gyms are open and busy 24 hours a day. NBA replica jerseys are expensive, must-have fashion statements. More than 200 million Chinese viewers watched last season's Rockets vs. Bucks (with Yi Jianlian) game. In the NBA, you're lucky to fill an arena with 20,000 people.

There are at least 450 million Chinese basketball fans compared to the population of the United States of 304 million. Imagine the revenues it would generate.......it's all for the money and India will be next.

Wow, and to think that this is just for your DetEksi Basketball League (DBL), Indonesia's biggest student basketball competition.

What about the IBL teams, do they play at the 5,000-seats DBL Arena too ?
