Americas Clubs League

-K2- said:
damn, you beated me to it :)

as alternates are the Guayama Brujos and the Fajardo Cariduros.

Santurce has players like Ayuso, Richie and Ricardo Dalmau, Tractor Traylor, Guayacan and Guayito Santiago, Michael Watson, Alex Falcon etc...

Arecibo has players like Marcus Fizer, Buster Figueroa, David Cortes, Edgar Padilla, Pachy Cruz, Mario Butler, Osiris Ricardo and others...

:)

This should be a good series and a close one

neither Arecibo or Santurce are sure to be able to play at the Liga de las Americas.

Arecibo citing financial situations (they signed Marcus Fizer who is making $10,000 a week) and Santurce citing logistic problems (Ayuso, "Tractor" Traylor, Richie Dalmau, Ricardo Dalmau, Orlando Melendez, Alex Falcon, Michael Watson would be out because or they are playing in Europe, they expect to serve some time in jail or studying to be a priest)

Ponce Leones and Guaynabo Conquistadores have showed some interest in playing at the Liga. Ponce reached the Round Robin but placed 7th. Guaynabo Conquistadores didnt reached the Round Robin.

great thread. I hope there will be such a league in the future, it could mean an immense rise of the bball level played in south america...

That's bad news, but FIBA Americas must have seen it coming. That kind of problems are likely to show up when you think that the calendars for our leagues don't match.

Shame, good team out, bad teams in the tournament, shame on them!

I wonder why BSN doesn't try to add another tournament during the rest of the year. Maybe they would not have all the great players it usually has, but it could be good anyway and it would allow them to play this Americas' league.

existia :D

the now dead Liga Puertorriqueña de Baloncesto. The main achievement of the league was the 4 point line

The thing is, when teams are competing they complaing about having to play and travel too much (like Venezuelan clubs always do when they have to play Liga Sudamericana). When they are not competing, they say putting a team together would be too expensive...

Santurce Crabbers confirmed their participation in the tournament, Arecibo has not confirmed, the team is changing owners/managers.

The crabbers will not have Larry Ayuso since the tournament starts in December.

It's great news, since the 2 top Brazilian clubs (Franca and Universo Brasilia) also confirmed.

Keep us updated about the roster Santurce will put together.

Finally this is starting to look good.
How many years have we been talking, with Josean (K2), about how cool it would be to have a Latin American league and finally it's so close

Olumide Oyedeji will return to the Crabbers? :D
no :D

actually, they are trying to get Tractor Traylor to play in the Liga. He is under probation back in the US and Santurce made some calls and they said that it is possible for him to do his probation in Puerto Rico and that they will push for him to play in the Liga. Larry Ayuso is 99.99% out of the Liga. Reef Fajardo, Sammy Villegas and Henson are also out because Santurce wont sign them again.

Right now their squad would look like this:
Orlando "Guayacan" Santiago
Eddin "Guayito" Santiago
Richie Dalmau
Ricardo Dalmau
Michael Watson
Orlando Melendez
Michael Castro
Alex Falcon
Tractor Traylor
Manuel Narvaez

and in case Tony Ruiz would not be able to coach them, Rolando Hourruitiner would coach them.

Arecibo Capitanes are also trying to make some arrangements for Marcus Fizer to play at the Liga, but thats close to impossible IMO. Arecibo will play in Miami from the 11 to the 13. Santurce will play from the 4 to the 7 in the "Quijote" Morales Colisseum in Guaynabo. Chicago, Dominican Republic and Mexico will be playing in Puerto Rico.

Arecibo will start practices November 26. They expect everyone except Pachy Cruz and Marcus Fizer. G/F Carlos Payano will be counted as an import due to FIBA rules.

Santurce will start practices November 5.

Wow, that's going to be a team really hard to beat. Traylor, Narváez, Santiago and the Dalmaus make possibly the best lineup of the tournament.

Chicago's team apparently is named "Chicago Allstars", but i can't find this team anywhere so i'm suspicious. I think there is an IBL team there (Chicago Heights) but that's not it.

Defensor Sporting of Montevideo qualified as the Uruguayan representative in this League, by winning the "Super 4" tournament that was implemented for that matter.

It's a little suprising, since Defensor wasn't the team with the best native players (the best ones are Diego Castrillón and Gastón Páez), but their good foreigners (David Jackson and Nathan Mielke) did their job well.
