Hi,alvin fan as well.. i have a copy( sports weekly ) of alvins first game as a collegian. He was all over the "through my lense clearly" section of Mon esguerra. Nawala ko na kaso! I actually became an alvin fan when i saw him against Letran during the 80s. Grabe! He was the pinoy jeff moore. High leaping , intense , not too much offense and would block every shots! Teamates then were leo Pujante , Naredo , atun the indon and i think Ramas later on. Whew, those were the days of the Ncaa.

This thought came to me when I saw an old newspaper clipping of a Mapua boxscore in a 1985 game. Only Patrimonio went on to play in the PBA.

It is common knowledge for people like me and Paulezra that Alvin wore no. 7 while a King Cardinal, my question is - In all of Alvin's years with MIT, did he ever have a teammate who went on to play in the PBA?

It seems to me that Alvin never had the supporting cast to battle the powerhouses Letran and San Sebastian in the mid-eighties.

I don't think there was any.

i I dont remember any of his teammates called up to the pros. Naredo was the only guy who had the potential as he went on to play for a pabl team. Alvin was a one man wrecking crew of Mapua. Btw, a little chismis. alvin was recruited to play for the rp team under Lipa right?. Prior to that stint, Alvins physique was unimpressive a bit on the skinny side. Same goes with his teamate like Magsanoc. Well, during that time i remember watching a mapua non ncaa game ( national seniors yata ) . Alvins upper body went from skinny to bulky ! I wont forget that scene because mIT fans behind me were all shocked kesyo hindi na daw proportioned. A friend of mine from U.P later told me the whole rp team was given a shot of "winstrol" kaya naglakihan silang lahat. I dunno but i was completely sold with his story. Hehe..gossip aside... i miss those days..college basketball then was ruled by superstars like Alvin, bong, samboy, allan , jarencio , vergel, Benjie. Panahon yun na player pinapanood natin hindi team. Wala ng ganyan ngayon!

I first saw Alvin personally in 1986 when he was playing for YCO in the old PABL. His teammates there were Glenn Capacio, Eric Altamirano and Dong Polistico. Magsanoc would come in later.

Man! even if you were at the opposite ring and at the lower ringside you can still hear the THUD! of his rebounds when he made those kalawit rebounds. It can be heard all over the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Could it be because.......of what's in your post? ;)

Probably....! Hehe but alvin is a good boy. I think his dad belonged to a religious group( adventist yata ). Hey, did you know that alvins teamate leo Pujante( baba tawag kasi babalu) is now an assistant coach in the Pba? Leos brother is tonichi who played for their( neighbor) rival Letran College.Trivia... Tonichi became Lasalle Greenhills coach after his stint there. We played a tuneup game against them and guess who were his players ? Binky Favis who later played for Ust , Guste who played for Pumaren at Lasalle and Guanio for the Maroons. Wow, time went by so fast.

Don't forget that Alvin also has a very beautiful sister (Angeli Patrimonio?) who was also doing some modeling and a not so beautiful brother (Allen Glenn, I am very sure).

Leo Pujante also played for Letran. I just don't know which NCAA team he first played for. He was famous for having his picture in the newspapers while figuring in a brawl with some San Sebastian Stags.

I first saw Tonichi when he was the star player for La Salle Greenhills. He threw his noseguard on the floor when his buzzer ending shot, which could have won the game against the Mapua Red Robins, clanked the rim instead.

Binky Favis starred for the De La Salle juniors team along with Henson. He rode the bench with the Green Archers and decided to transfer to UST. In a game against La Salle in the old Loyola gym, former teammate, Dickie Bachmann whipped him with a towel while Binky who was standing in front of the Archer's bench, was objecting animatedly to a referee's call that went against him.

Hi Ford...

Were you referring to Ricky Henson, who donned jersey #4 while playing for the La Salle Greenies? Henson entered UP Diliman in 1987 and became part of the organization which I headed. Our org participated in an invitational basketball tournament featuring different business organizations in UP and I handled my org team in the first two years. Happily, we won the first two titles. I had in my roster for the first title notable players like Henson, and UP varsity players Albert Rios and Jose "Dodo" Samson. Henson played again for the succeeding year and was my top offensive guy, burning the hoops with nearly 30 ppg.

Henson missed the first game of our game in year 1. He suited up in game 2 but I didn't field him until the start of the 2nd half. He ended up topscoring for the team with 20 points despite playing only in the 2nd half. His performance earned him a slot in my starting roster as the team's lead PG with Rios playing center and Samson as PF.

Henson is about 5-10 and tisoy right? if my memory is correct.....i think i watched their game against Ateneo in a championship game . Eric reyes was his teammate and the blue eagles had Nieto and Araneta. Im not sure if Jun reyes played because it wasnt a uaap game. Kalimutan ko na sino nanalo rin pero i think lasalle scored an upset that day.

more than his upper body, his biggest physical gift are/were his hips, ass and legs (thighs and calves)..it's almost unfair to his defender(s) after he planted those legs of his in the shaded lane, the defender will almost never be able to move him, then when he pivots, he'll use that ass and hip to move and hook him (them) over. the only defenders i saw who had relative success on him was Dignadice, who slides to his side or fronts him up to PREVENT the entry pass, he also had this impeccable timing in stealing and tapping over those entry passes. The other one is the immovable Chito Loyzaga, who was gifted with a big chest and a bigger brain.

Yes, but I was not able to get his first name. He was a meztiso looking guy and was also a teammate of Binky Favis for Makati in the interclub. The game I saw both of them was in the Metro-Manila eliminations for the National High School championship against the FEU Baby Tamaraws, counting among its players, the Johnny A and a very lanky EJ Feihl.

The world indeed is very small and Jose "Dodo" Samson is a batchmate of ours in high school. I am very sure my twin can discuss somethings about him. He also was a varsity player for UP along with co-highschoolmate (and current UP Assistant Coach) Jojo Villa in the 1984 UAAP. Dodo donned # 18 and Jojo donned # 14 two years before Paras. Ricky Dandan wore # 14 in 1985 before Paras.

It's good that Henson and Samson and Rios were allowed to play for your orgs, I remember a former varsity player who played in the inaugural UP inter-college tournament in 1986 being accosted and being questioned about his eligibility to play because he was a varsity daw. He retorted in the vernacular, "How can I be a varsity player when I played only against NU!"

AIT, counting among its players- Patrick Gregorio, incidentally won that inaugural tournament. :)

Yes, Percy and I spoke about Dodo Samson because of the UPIS connection. He became a good buddy of mine, having stayed in the same "tambayan" where my HS buddies come from. Samson gravitated in our area because he was friends with the upper classmen of our HS. I think he's based in Davao now and works for Petron.

Yes, the tournament allowed ex-varsity players to suit up the teams. What they disallowed were present varsity players. Samson was a player of the UP Fighting Maroons in 1984 under Coach Joe Lipa. That was a competitive team that also saw the likes of Mon Celis and Dondi Roque playing for State U. On the other hand, Rios suited up for UP only in 1989, a year before the tournament was held. Hence, when we defended our crown in 1989, Rios wasn't allowed to suit up, allowing Henson to lead the team.

How about Benny Cheng? Didn't they play together?

they didn't play together, that's what i remember. Alvin was already playing in the PBA when Cheng became the star player of Mapua.

btw, im not a Purefoods fan but i admire the captain because of his stint with the national team. He plays 100% for the RPteam.

Alvin Patrimonio's spin move.

Nobody could do those moves - spin, pivot, better than Alvin Patrimonio. I say pag nagkasabay si Alvin & Junmar Fajardo, a 6-foot-6 Alvin Patrimonio would easily take a 6-10 Junmar Fajardo to school.

I think Alvin's biggest asset aside from his skills was that he never get intimidated by his defenders even if they were 3 to 4 inches taller than him. At ang lakas ng shooting power ni Alvin. Sureball talaga mga tira nya sa ilalim or from short range to mid-range.
