It's that time again, when fans debate just who deserves to go to the world cup despite crashing out of their respective tournaments. Thankfully this will be the last time since they are doing away with it for 2019, but for now we're stuck with it.

As always the wild card will play out with three teams likely going to Europe with one team going to the rest of the world.

Of course with China going down early in Asia is there any team in the world that would get the wild card before them?

China has to be the favorite if they want it, the only non-European team I could see competing with them is Canada.

China will definitely get it, they wouldn't chose Canada over them in a million years

Bump to get this moved to the World Cup Sub forum

Also cripes, if Brazil doesn't go on a serious winning streak they may pose a threat to the Wild Card.

"FIBA shall select four wild cards after all of the continental championships are done. FIBA is prohibited from selecting more than three teams from the same continental zone, and to select teams that had not participated in qualifying."
only 2 slots given to europe..
China would get one

Race is for Taiwan against the loser from Americas probably from Argentina, Brazil and Canada

And lets welcome Brazil to the discussion.

Right now I think the contenders are

Asia
Biggest Name: China
Best Finish: Chinese Taipei

Africa
Biggest Name: Nigeria/Tunisia
Best Finish: Ivory Coast

Americas:
Biggest Name: Brazil
Best Finish: TBD

Europe:
Biggest Name: TBD
Best Finish: TBD

Brazil doesn't deserve a wildcard.. how will other teams react if they do..

After today's performance, it's hard to pull for Brazil to get a wildcard. However, they'll probably will get a second look by the committee because of their name-recognition and history in the tournament.

Chinesse Basketball is praying for Argentina to advance to the worlds. With Brazil out, its already tough for the China to get a wildcard.

There are only 2 nations that played all the world championship editions: USA and Brazil. So why woulndt Brazil deserves one wild card? Despite the history and market size, everybody knows that we played in Caracas without 6 of our 7 best players.

Even in the dark days of our national team it wasnt so annoying to watch Brazil playing. But if we dont get a wild card it will be a shame.

Its more shameful to get a wildcard even without winning a single game in your zonal tournament..and 7 players Imo you only 3 to 4 guys short.. the center position (covered by splitter) scorer (covered by BArbosa) and another big (VArejao and another scorer MAchado)

Argentina lost today to Jamaica and its road to Spain2014 looks awful. Looks like its a viable candidate to join the wildcard conversation. Tomorrow vs the recently eliminated Uruguay and then Canada to finish the second round.

Russia looks bound for this topic now. I swear I have never seen such a fallout from one year to the next.

Seriously
China, Tunisia, Nigeria, Brazil, Russia (though not eliminated yet), Argentina (ditto). That's more than half of the teams that qualified for the Olympics (not counting Great Britain of course)

Do you guys believe that FIBA can give Americas 2 wild cards if Argentina fails to qualify?

China, Brazil, Argentina and one european.

Canada and Venezuela joins the discussion. Argentina qualifying is probably a load off many European minds. However Russia has officially joined the discussion with their loss to Finland.

Right now
China
Brazil
Russia

seem rather safe bets.

Russia got a wildcard in 2010. Would this impact their chances?

What about Turkey? Fanatic basketball country, big market and silver medalist in 2010.

Canada has a good case basketball-wise (only missed by one game, talent level is improving while many of the other wild card contenders are on the decline, possibility of bringing the 2013 and 2014 #1 picks in the NBA draft), but probably isn't that attractive financially. Can Basketball Canada even afford the 500,000 euro fee?

Venezuela is the opposite--their team sucks, but they've been splashing out the money recently.

Brazil maybe the favorites from the Americas, but will they be able to get their good players for the WC? No sense in giving them a wild card if they're going to have the same team that went 0-4 at the FIBA-Americas tournament.

Turkey I think would have had a better shot should they have done anything since 2010. They might, MIGHT, have an edge on Russia since Russia got the wildcard last time, I think so long as FIBA has not other big nations go out that they could give it to both.

Come on Canada is an all star team come 2014...Bennett Olynyk Wiggins might be joining with NAsh handling the show..
