there were a lot in fb, but to be fair in Pidos case itwas intentional in fans point of view..

Most people know Junemar has trouble defending the PNR. Even in that game, he was the victim of a Castro 3 in a PNR. So I don't understand why some supposedly knowledgeable fans castigating his benching. To be fair, Junemar actually has improved his defense these past couple of games. But he is still their worst PNR defender. Unfortunately, he is their best rebounder. As I said, they really have to get a tall 3 to compensate for instances when JMF sits. JMF actually has lesser minutes now, around 30 to 32 mins, to maximize his energy for defense. But that means SMB is abused on the boards while he is not there. Their being short on the wings exacerbates this.

Teams need to realize Oftana is a rebounding wing, all thanks to his years of playing the 4 spot in Beda. He might be primarily a corner guy (by design) but if you don’t put a body in him, about 8 times out of 10, he’d go for the putback or offensive rebound. For this window, I think he’s got a very good chance to make the cut, and if I were Chot, I’d select him. We could use some length and the rebounding from the wing position. His 3 ball would come in handy, too, esp one designated shooter in Pogoy got injured.

I wish we could accomodate both Oftana and Tolentino, but knowing Coach Chot he’d rather load up on guards than lengthy wings. I could still remember Navarro’s skill set gone to waste.

I hope Tim gets the HC job post-WC2023. He’s the only PBA coach who dared to use wingmen with legit size.

The problem with Chot is he thinks DDO nya are played by NBA level personnel.

I would have been cool with Chot’s system if we only had a surplus of 6’4-6’7 shooting guards in the level of Clarkson. Pero wala eh.

Actually, Pido has used 6'5" Arvin Tolentino, 6'6" Jamie Malonzo, and 6'6" Will Navarro as wings. Big reason why I'm cool with him going to UST. Might develop FIBA-sized wings there.

Topex has used 6'5" Sean Manganti and 6'4" Sean Anthony at 3 also. Even Ariel Vanguardia is using 6'5" Tyrus Hill at 3. Yeng used Oftana and Semerad regularly at 3, and Gabe when he was with RoS.

So yeah, other PBA coaches use wings with legit size.

Oh, yeah. As for Oftana, I read that he was once again referred to as a big. I think the context is the Rookie-Sophomore game.

Is four conferences of game film not enough to see that Oftana is not a big, and hasn't been used as such for the most part? Jeez, a 6'5"+ homegrown player is automatically a big. I saw the same thing with Navarro.

Shows how not normal having 196-200cm wings is in the PBA, and in Philippine basketball in general. We're getting there, but we have some work to do.

base on memory recall, Pido never relied on a traditional 4 in his previous stint as UST coach. Mariano, Ababou, Ferrer and Maliksi are tall wings (relatively), whereas in NP he had Malonzo and now Arvin

I think they have the luxury to use their player on their natural position since they don't have any problem in the 4-5 spot!

CYG maximizes the use of the strength of his player. Like Gabe's ball handling, Oftana length at 3, Don Trollano's scoring capability, Mick Pennisi's shooting, Belga's unorthodox shooting.

Coach Yeng was the one who normalized stretch big in PBA Mick Pennisi and Mike Hrabak duo while Davon Harp and E. Vill were his inside operators, i thing he was way ahead than his peers when it comes to maximizing a fiba oriented system though the irony of it is it was not translated to his international coaching stint, as he faced coaches who were more technically advanced in using this kind of system, plus the player factor

IBN flavor of the week Calvin Oftana is also PBA Player of the Week. His scoring average doesn’t stand out, but his rebounding and assists were remarkable, esp for a wing. Hope to see him more in Gilas, though, and with Pogoy out, we just might.

Actually most coaches use stretch 4s, stretch 5s or tall wings. There is one notable exception. Speaking about SMB, I noticed the change in foul calling. June Mar is not allowed to impede driving players. But he is allowed to stand or jump straight up but his arms can tilt forward a bit. "Payong" in the local parlance. He is allowed at times to touch the arm of the driving player up in the air. The player loses some lift and either misses or Junemar swats the ball. He is allowed to do this against bigger players, like the imports but not against guards or if the player sells the contact. This allows Junemar to be defensively relevant and stay on the court. Obviously, this will not be allowed in the NBA. Not sure if this will be allowed in Fiba.

A lot of players deserving to be in the All-Star were snubbed. It has become a popularity contest with two Ginebra players being voted as captains. The selection process is flawed.

I understand all star being for the fans but I doubt there are fans that would watch all star because of Nards Pinto or Jeremiah Gray. Both of them are good players but they aren't needle moovers.

I hope Gray can get the exemption as a local for Gilas
For the All Star stuffs, they could just omit those lol

It's game 1 of the 2023 pba governors cup finals featuring crowd darling ginebra san miguel kings vs tnt tropang giga..

Listen to the ginebra crowd roar..

A defensive slugfest for both teams this game. Defense was on point, although the teams did have some miscues on both ends.

I really like seeing chots lineup with pogoy sized forwards getting shitted on by proper small ball teams like ginebra rn
TNT have three proper-sized wings in their small ball lineup in RHJ, Oftana, and Khobuntin. If Erram is at 5, usually two of those man the forward spots.

But yeah, Ginebra just had a consistent big in CStand to complement their small ball lineup of Brownlee and Malonzo as the forwards.

if in case ginebra represents pba in the next easl, what do you think of this lineup, scottie, brownlee, malonzo, a stretch 4 second import and cs at 5. or cs at 4 and a second import at 5 imagine a quincy miller type or cmac

Didnt see much of the game. But it was close until Gins made a bunch of 3 pt shots in the 4th and TNT could not make anything. Cone is really good at adapting. TNT needs to do a better job of running off the 3. Pogoy might have had a hard time keeping up with Pringle on drives and challenging Malonzo on the 3. Malonzo seems to have a high 3 FG when he can set his feet and elevate.
