Thats because unlike Dragons, Phoenix can shoot and penetrate. That make closing out difficult because you don't know what the player will do. Close out hard penetration will lead to the weak side challenge. Then leads to a more open shot.

Dragons made the mistake of switching imports. bad matchup sana for ginebra si powell

Phoenix shot poorly in this game, 24% from 3 this conference. 33% from 3 ain't that great too, but having Tio and Serrano increases the threat. What bugged me was the lack of effort in the 4th, both in the closeouts and the rebounds. There was a drop-off in effort from the Dragons game.

After that defensive masterclass against the Dragons, Ginebra are not as sharp on that end against Phoenix. What the hell is going on?

Shooting.

Cone and Ginebra are great at shutting down points on the paint. Not against 3 point shooters.

They rotated well on the Dragons' shooters last time, and executed very well on defense. Now, the effort and execution are gone.

I think it was ok considering Ginebra has two good inside offense and defense players. Brownlee can defend Powell. Ginebra can throw more defenders at Powell. The only thing Powell has advantage is that he had played already, making him in more game shape

I think its ok, its just hard to guard players who can penetrate and shoot like Powell can. Look at Tio a small fake Brownlee went up, one dribble pull up. No one did that in Dragons.

LA closing out good on Jazul on the corner. Jazul fake and step buck if not for a slight push on LA, its another 3.

The front court trio of Wesson, Anthony and Mocon was too much for Ginebra tonight; quick, athletic and very pesky on defense.

Biting on those fakes were some of the lapses I was talking about. Brownlee lost focus, he rarely does. If he were still focused, I don't think he would have bitten on that fake.

I also saw Gray out of position, lucky Tio or Jazul missed that shot from the right corner.

And the repeated offensive rebounds? I know they grabbed the same, but they were big.

And if defending teams with few penetrators but good shooters were that easy, our men's NT wouldn't have allowed Indonesia to shoot 26-55 (47.2%) from the field and 13-31 (41.9%) from 3. Around 10 of those 13 makes were open. And Indonesia had only Bolden and DMX as inside scorers, maybe Jawato as a penetrator. The rest were shooters.

This was not a mistake... That was agreement made before the Commissioner's cup start... They have to play both Powell and Nicholson because they both under contract... Nicholson is a good import, but his local teammates guards are not as good as Powell, So that they have to adjust on that game... And that was 1st game under Nicholson... Let's see vs SMB if they already adjust well... since SMB will play w/o Junmar on Sunday, they have the advantage already...

I know both are. What I meant was the timing of the switch and against which team.

What if Nicholson starts first than Powell? Maybe it will be the same since Nicholson will face only weaker teams, while Powell will also struggling against Ginebra too, since that will be his first game... And i think Bay Area was ok after that lost... They needed that loss actually... Atleast pressure is gone already... The true battle will be in playoffs....

They were in town for a quite a bit prior to the start of the commissioner's cup so I doubt Powell will struggle. He's younger too.

I still don't get how Mocon was able to fly under the radar unnoticed by both the evil empires. Would have been a good addition.

If Phoenix managed to sell its franchise, then Mocon will end up in a top team one way or another.

I don't think so... If you are newcomer that wants to buy that existing team, I want a competitive line up right away... Do you think they will buy that team w/o marquee players? Mocon, Tio, Serrano and Perkins are good start for new franchise to build a team from start... Not as loaded as when Alaska sells their team but this is still competitive, very young squad that can start for... They still have also first round pick via NLEX (w/c might be a mid tier pick)... Still if i'm a buyer, i will ask Phoenix to retain Mocon, Tio, Serrano and Perkins.. They also have good veteran leader like Jazul and Anthony... And who knows, The team who will buy Phoenix franchise can bring Wright back here and play for the new franchise....

unless the buyer of the phx franchise wants to buy it cheaper, they'll avoid any long term expensive contract if that is the case. Plus they could rebuild the team through draft.

But with Mocon as the only expensive player left in phx, i guess he'll be a good building block. But i expect the Jazuls and Sean Anthonys (is he still there) to be traded in a fire sale to keep the price attractive to prospective franchise buyers

edit: forgot that perkins is still in phx. So Perkins and Mocon might be the only holdover while the rest of the roster could be traded for crumbs

Again, prep and chemistry is what is lacking in Gilas SEA members. Don't lessen those two factors in playing defense. The up fake and penetration is what teams dont want to give up. Thats why giving space for weakside shooters of Ginebra and even other teams are because of fear of penetration which lead into more open shot

Don?t be surprised if the SBP will tap Brownlee or Clarkson for the SEA games. Lolz

I'm aware of the context of that SEA Games debacle. Lack of prep time and chemistry was a factor, but also because the scheme (playing zone against a team that shot 32-86 (37.2%) over their last three games was a horrible idea for one), and the wrong personnel were in the game for a longer period of time than necessary, should have given their minutes to the better defenders in the roster (Navarro, Lopez, Tungcab). But yeah, you need to be drilled for a long time and have played with each other, lalo na kung first time playing together. That's on SBP management for the roster composition and on the staff for not enforcing at least 3-4 weeks of practice time. Jeez, what an all-around shitshow.

As for Ginebra, well, lot of Phoenix's makes was transition, penetration, and shot creation. I haven't watched Tio much in his PBA career, so he can create his shot now. RR and Mocon can penetrate too. Rebounding from Serrano too. Damn, 15 offensive rebounds given up, and a 47% clip from the field. 24% from 3, but yeah, there were shooting threats. So frustrating to see Ginebra give up all those super easy baskets in the 4th.
