besides, UAE is didn't even qualify for the FIBA Asia Championships :D

hey , again i just read it on an irani site, nway its kind if realistic.u no they group the teams according to fiba rankings and philippines is somewhere in the 60s i think so chances r they will be grouped with 2 good teams and a normal team.........

The top four finishers in the last FIBA-Asia Championships are seeded to head each of the four brackets, meaning No. 1 China, No. 2 Lebanon, No. 3 Qatar and No. 4 South Korea.

The draw will begin by picking three teams, except Japan, for three brackets. Japan, as the host country, will be given the privilege of choosing which bracket to join. After the first eight teams are settled in their brackets, the draw will continue to place the remaining eight entries.

“To avoid China until the finals, assuming they top the first bracket, we should finish No. 1 in the second or fourth bracket or place No. 2 in the third bracket,” explained Gregorio. “Then we should top the quarterfinals so that we face the second placer in the crossover semis before moving into the finals against China.”

Looks like JAPAN has the advantage here... They have the right to choose who they want to battle first... And looks like they will go to the weakest bracket to avoid early elimination.... And for me this is the toughest Olympic qualifier as far as ASIA's concern... Almost all team are very tough and unpredictable... This will be a great tournament...

THE SAN Miguel-RP squad will face a tough challenge in their quest to earn a slot to the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the team got drawn in the tough Group B in the 24th Fiba Asia Men’s Championship in Tokushima, Japan from July 28 to August 5.

The Philippine squad is grouped with host Japan, Qatar and Syria following the draw of lots held in Tokushima Wednesday morning.

The Southeast Asia top qualifier was represented by the newly-appointed SBP-BAP executive director Patrick Gregorio.

Last May, the National squad suffered tough beatings from Syrian representatives in the 17th Fiba Asia Champions Cup in Iran.

During the elimination round, the import-laden Al Jalaa Aleppo of Syria handed SMC-RP an 80-114 beating, which was duplicated by a 77-109 drubbing during the semifinal round.

Qatar also did their share of whipping the Filipino warriors as its Al Rayaan ball club scored a 75-95 victory in their game for third place.

But without any import, the Philippines is looking forward to a very competitive game against any of their tormentors.

Host China has a huge edge to advance to the quarterfinal round after they were bracketed in Group C together with Taiwan, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.

Lebanon, Jordan, India and another Southeast Asian team Indonesia is in Group A. Group D teams include South Korea, Iran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Two teams in each bracket will advance to the crossover quarterfinal round. The teams will play knockout games from the quarterfinals onwards. (RCM)
