Let the four year “preparations” begin.

8-slots for Asia-Oceania including hosts (same as China 2019).

Will surely qualify:

Qatar (hosts)
Australia
New Zealand

Remaining 5 slots to be contested by:

China
Korea
Japan
Lebanon
Jordan
Philippines
Iran

Challengers:

Chinese Taipei
Bahrain

This is gonna be a bloodbath compared to 2019 and 2023.

I think only Australia is the sure bet to qualify for the 2027 FIBA WC… but the rest is not sure… Iran might struggle to qualify for 2027 in post Haddadi era… China still struggling with their new generation post Yi era, Zhou Qi become a disappointment right now… NZL is beatable, Jordan already taught us how they can keep up and almost win vs NZL last WC group stages… Japan might be qualify too but depending on the roster in most of qualifier windows… Korea is unknown after series of declining participation in FIBA tournaments and ratliffe is gone after Asian games… we still never know yet… I guess the upcoming Asian games will be the gauge who will be contenders for WC qualifiers 2 years from now…

Is Qatar guaranteed to have a slot in the 2027 WC, or it has to go to series of qualification games like Indonesia? Also, Korea and maybe CT ( a long shot). They are the only countries that can unseat 2 or 3 of this year's WC Asian participants.

Is Saudi Arabia is a rising power in Asia? Bahrain?

One thing for sure is that only Australia is 100% sure they can qualify due to extreme talent that they have while other teams need to work that spot, even NZL is not untouchable… remember they were almost lose to Jordan… that means Asian teams are not afraid of NZL anymore…. China and Iran already regressed, w/ their young core and not as good as their older ones… Bahrain and Saudi might be the dark horse… since their young core that they develop since 2017 will be on their primes come 2025 (marwani bros, Al Suwailem, Kadi and Al Gohar of KSA and Ali, MJ, Hamooda bros of Bahrain)… Gilas, Japan, Jordan, Korea and Lebanon are depending who will be their line up come qualifiers.. especially that 4 out of 6 windows are w/o any NBA caliber players can’t participate… Mongolia should also one team that we should look out too… Their line up last pre qualifiers are not their best team yet… they have 4-5 foreign based Mongolians who playing overseas that can strengthen Mongolia team… Guam should also team to look out for, especially they can easily hire American players have roots in Guam that can recruit anytime… they are still US colony state that only residency will be only use for them just to be eligible as local for Guam…

Australia appears to be the most likely team to qualify, while the qualification of other teams such as Iran, China, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea remains uncertain.

Japan will miss Hachimura & Yuta Watanabe in most of the qualifying windows. Still, Japan won't be a pushover even without those NBA guys.

Saudi Arabia showed promise in the last few years but struggled lately. It was beaten by Syria & Bahrain in the Pre-Olympic Qualifiers & got routed by a depleted Iran team twice (by an average of 20+ points margin) in the Asian Games.

Iran somehow proved in the 2023 World Cup & the Asian Games that it can still challenge the elite Asian teams during the post Samad Bahrami & Hamed Haddadi era of Iran basketball. Of course the Iran team during the Haddadi & Bahrami era was definitely stronger & more scary.

The Asian team that I think is on the rise now is Chinese Taipei. I see the Taiwanese are going to be more dangerous than Middle Eastern teams Saudi Arabia & Bahrain, especially 2 to 3 years from now.

QATAR is already qualified by the virtue of being the host. The case of Indonesia is different because it is a co-hosting job. FIBA gave automatic 2 slots and 1 conditional slot for the hosts which is determined by FIBA rankings.

In the 2023WC, 7 slots are allotted for Asia-Oceania, since the hosts came from Asia, FIBA gave 1 slot by virtue of hosting. So that sum up to 8 slots for Asia, but since JAP AND PH have higher FIBA ranking than Indonesia, they got the 2 slot.
Then FIBA gave condition to Indonesia to get more automatic slot by finishing top 8 in fiba asia cup.

If Indonesia able to secure the condition, only 5 slots were up for grab then.

So, giving the 1 slot (virtue by hosting) automatically to Qatar won't diminish the number of slot up for grabs for the 2027 WC.

Even if Guam fields an all-overseas team, they will still lose if their offensive style and discipline is still the same.

Even I know how to balance the PBA & Gilas schedule. Just free up the Western summer months between late July and mid August... but guess what's supposed to be on during those months? The PBA All-Filipino Conference (which is still on now because of the PBA only having 2 conferences).

So what happens in 2027? Another special season where the PBA shortens the league again? Do we go full-1998/2010 and have Gilas play as a guest team in the Commissioners Cup? Speaking of which, what happens in 2026 when the Asian Games takes place betwen mid-September and early October? Whatever it is, the schedule has to revolve around those three months being dedicated to a major tournament whether it's FIBA Asia Cup (2025), the World Cup, (2027) or the Olympics (2028).

Even that doesn't solve everything because of year-round qualifying windows in Feb, July for the OQT, Nov, Jun of the following year, (btw, insert the SEA Games in Dec where KQ will be playing in the UAAP instead of this) and if they make it to the 2nd round of World Cup Qualifying, it runs smack through the Commissioners Cup in Sept, late Nov to early Dec, (cross fingers KQ is already in Japan and doesn't prolong his UAAP stay) and Feb again in two years, which will only mess up one week of that year's Governor's Cup.

It's only the B-League players that will be available all throughout with their FIBA clause... so if you're looking at a core, for now that's Sotto, Edu, Ramos, KQ, and Tamayo if he found another team in Japan. All the PBA players have to adjust playing a different FIBA game, and so will CTC, who I NEVER doubted... which brings me to the elephant in the room: a soon-to-be 39-year old Justin Brownlee. Take Brownlee out of CTC's Asian Games team, Cone looks like just another Chot. They don't beat China if JB didn't decide to go 1 on 5 and explode.

I understand the group will just be together for those two games against Taiwan and Hong Kong... but moving forward, they have to consider the possibilty of losing players to injury or the off-chance that someone in the PBA or the other leagues plays so well to earn a chance of a call-up to a window or even a tournament just like how KQ did in Dubai. Let the SBP decide when to use Kouame, JC, or even naturalize another player. If they somehow pull this off, I can even see the team going as high as 3rd in Asia. If the PBA f***s it up for Gilas, I don't even see us advancing in the 2nd round of World Cup Qualifying and you can forget 2027.

Yeah, we'll have to earn our WC spot this time. I'm confident that we can qualify, but for that to happen, we have to get a lot of things right. Roster construction, tactical adjustments, ample replacements, etc.

There's little margin for error, especially considering that SoKor's back and rebuilding, Japan's still there, China's rebuilding, the Middle Eastern teams (Jordan, Lebanon) are still there, and Aussie and NZ are still strong. There are 7 available spots, since Qatar are the hosts. So, we need to get our best roster there. We have to strike the right balance between continuity and best roster.

Are Qatar automatically qualified? They can't even past by their regional rivals Bahrain and KSA... They will be humiliated big time by World cup teams... FIBA has to be fair since they didn't give Indonesia automatic slot while Qatar will have an easy qualification...

Australia
Lebanon
NZL
Japan
Philippines
Jordan
China

I see those teams will qualified for 2027 FIBA WC... Sorry for Korea and Iran, their rebuilding process will need more time to get back from being serious contenders again...

should be. was there a time there was only a single host and that host didnt qualify?

Other sports yes, Philippines hosted numerous volleyball tournaments but the main host Philippines has no team… especially back in the 90s when we hosted world championships for womens volleyball, we are not included there…

Ok ill rephrase. Was there a solo host of a fiba event that did not automatically qualify? Because if i remeber correctly, Indonesia is the first host who did not qualify.

Robert, doesnt even a real world cup in volleyball, the only reason we got an indonesian case last year is because we have potential 3 automatic qualified teams..

As far basketball is concerned, I doubt the average Qatari cares enough about their team playing in the WC.

The way it looks seems like they are more interested in marketing their country instead of seeing their NT compete against a world basketball power.

I mean, isn't this how sports washing works? The whole point is for advertising in order to attract investors.

So even if Qatar gets the Indonesia treatment, it won't really affect them as a whole.

That was my also assessment why Qatar gets the FIBA WC hosting gig… basketball is also a popular sport (3rd most popular in the world), So hosting a popular major event will be good for their tourism economy.. I have just concern on what will other countries feel when they will see Qatar will get heavy 70-80 pt blowouts in WC games.. it will be embarrassing and shame for their country, even thou they don’t care about basketball too much.. they will be a walking meme in international scene… worst than Shanghai sharks memes…

Which is why they might get the Indonesia treatment.

Progress further into the KO stages of the Asia Cup or 2nd round of the qualifiers.

Sadik what part of having 3 host nations is hard to understand regarding the case of Indonesia not getting an automatic qualification for being a co-host, Qatar will be the solo host and solo host most of the time gets automatic qualification, plus Qatar was once qualified in a WC unlike Indonesia which do not have any meaningful history yet with basketball. Plus no one cares if Qatar gets demolished they survived the biggest sporting event on earth despite not winning any single game and getting trashed for a sports that really matter to them, and how sure are you that they will not try to improve their team until 2027, Qatar has the resources, plus they are not hosting to be a serious threat or win anything it's about Qatar as country and not Qatar national basketball team,
