US Men's 3x3 eliminated. Thrashed by the Dutch.

The disrespect this USA 3X3 team got from the BIG3 is downright stupid. They're convinced a bunch of slow 40-year old ex-NBA players can do better in FIBA 3X3 rules.

When it comes to Philippine Sports and basketball, the issue should be about being smart and realistic.

Like I said a few pages back, there is so much dilution happening in basketball because majority of Pinoy men is only considering that single sport. Our Olympic achievements are illustrating the obvious that for majority of our population, other sports is the way to go.

Having more athletes go into other sports not only helps other sports, but it also gets rid of the dilution in basketball. It's a win-win for both sides.

The reason why we sucked at Olympics (or even Asian games and seagames) because of incompetence of Peping Cojuangco... Back then he doesn't even care about the needs of our athletes.. we have good athletes before, but there is no support because of incompetence of Peping... He is Chot Reyes in Philippine sports before Chot Reyes...

I just found out Obiena has been playing track since age 4. Normies have no clue how much these athletes on TV went through to get to this level. "10,000 hours."

Hoping he also gets a gold.

It is bigger than any one person. Like I've been saying in this thread...the athletes in this level have been perfecting their craft since they were very young.

Obiena at 4 and Yulo before 7 were already training. That goes beyond the reach of any one sports official or governing body. That is something that the family and the community has to do their own share in terms of responsibility.

We are not a rich country and so of course our government programs will be under-funded. It is not wise to just depend on them. If a kid athlete is developed early and properly, opportunities for better training and support arise just like in the case of Yulo. Yulo's development has all been about his family training him early that resulted to that Japanese scholarship. Philippine government support along the way is at most moral.

These olympic athletes sacrificed their youth/normal lives to attain their peak forms

would love to see a olympic medalist face a normie, this would be hilarious

Yes, so many are quick to have the usual negative comments...

-that's too young
-that's too much work
-the parents are living vicariously through the kids
-wait for real coaches/schools/government to train them
-let them enjoy their childhood.

It's mostly people who are either afraid of success or have no idea about how to achieve it and the sacrifices it takes.

They then conveniently praise Yulo and Obiena.

Anyone who’s ever done varsity track and field in the 90’s know the national athletes living in the quarters inside Rizal Memorial (yes, inside. the stairwells under the bleachers had bunk beds for entire families) have their own community. There were no smartphones in the 90’s, just 4-line Nokias that had Snake. It was natural for EJ to hang around throwers, jumpers, and runners with his dad being a pole vaulter himself, kids like him were ever present watching meets from city-level PRISAA to The National Open to the point of wanting to try stuff on the tartan surface when no one’s looking because they got all-access to the stadium when there were no events as long as their parents had a space on the bunk beds.

I'm sure he can.. he's only 24... He can compete 2 more Olympic stints and for sure he will take more gold medals and cemented himself as GOAT... He's also good at ring category.. he can also compete in apparatus... He's a one of the kind athlete... While for sure he's untouchable in vault and Floor exercise...
2 more Olympics? He is not even sure to compete at 28 LA as per Daily Tribune report. 24 is the peak age for gymnastics and he will be 28 on the next Olympics. I cannot say he is untouchable in vault and floor just because he won this Olympics. Just watch FIG World Cup where he was beaten by the Israeli and Armenian a lot of times. But for sure, Yulo is a special athlete and we are lucky to have him in our lifetime.

majority of american fans are very clueless about how it works.. it doesn’t simply say “oh send big 3 players, some nba players” no.. fiba 3x3 is ranking based and if you’re not in the rankings, the national federation will not include you in the pool of national prospects.. they (americans) didn’t know why fredette, barry, maddox and travis was chosen because of higher rankings and they play together since late 2022? or 2023 with team miami pro tour team and they didn’t know the US team won silver behind serbia 3x3 last year..

our first gold medalist (diaz) started early too.. join olympics at very young age.. and look what she has accomplished 1 olympic silver, 1 olympic gold, 1 asian games gold

Par for the course for most sports too. It's usually that type of parent/family that produces these elite kids, they either know from experience what it takes or are smart enough to realize it early. More affluent kids also gets a leg up in "rich man" sports like tennis, golf, racing, etc (Alex Eala). Yulo also had older siblings who were into gymnastics/cheer. In basketball, we have the Ravenas, Alas, Ildefonso, etc.

However or whatever route a kid athlete goes through though...the key is doing it early.

But if we stick with Peping, I don't think we will see Yulo or Obiena like athletes... We have so many potential athletes in the past but Peping and co., doesn't care to our athletes' needs... Check at our performance in Asian games and Olympics under Peping management and Post Peping performance? It's obvious that we perform very well under Tolentino and Vargas... While under Peping, we can't even win atleast 1 bronze in Olympics...

Even in 5x5 games, they don't know how true national team program works... When KD and Bron retires, I don't think they can win more gold medals in basketball... They still have talent but no chemistry... Edwards easily check at FIBA... Same with Tatum and Haliburton... I don't they can win gold with Tatum and Edwards as leaders of team USA

Whats worse is that bashers keep moving the goal posts.

Back then, the reason we should not be investing in basketball is because we cant even make it to the world cup

This. Haters will just always hate. Gilas did alot of checks for the past 14 years.

- 2 silver medal finishes in FIBA-Asia Cup
- 1 gold medal finish in Asian Games
- 3 consecutive OQT appearances
- 3 consecutive FIBA World Cup appearances

If these people insist that we should invest on some sports where, as they claim, we are going to excel like football, they I will talk them straight - do the Azkals really have a chance to win a football match the same way Gilas will always have? If not, then I will not invest in their team if winnability is the concern.

No shortcut to success, you had to grind at a early age if you want to be the best in your sport.

that’s why Kai and some of our blue chip players are already late development wise

its actually tiring to debate with them that basketball is funded privately, they should for look a booster that would finance their beloved sport

unfortunately MVP doesnt like athletes below 5’0 lol

Yes he can... Maybe in 2028 his peak time, in 2032 he can still competitive and more wiser... Some of his opponents are appearing in the event 4 Olympics stints and still competitive...

Those people have their agenda.. I saw most of them mostly in football pages or some social media pages always have their agenda against basketball... Those they saying "tigilan na yang basketball, wala tayo panalo dyan, mag football nalang daw kasi di na need height".. as if they know how height is still very valuable in football matches.. I watched Iraq vs Azkals game in livestreams.. the height disadvantage of Azkals was very evident, we are outclass, out hustle, too skilled, too small and too slow against Iraqis... Most of Iraqis height average from 5'10 to 6'3... Even teams like Indonesia and Vietnam can't match up against Iraq due to that advantage.. remember, Indonesia and Vietnam loves football and they invest the sport so much, but they can pass ASEAN level...
