will a Kawamura/Kai Sotto duo work in FIBA setting?
With a future without brownlee and clarkson, eventually Gilas will need to transition to an offense that revolves around the primary ball handler and a big (Kai)
We need a scoring point guard like Kawamura who can open up the floor for Kai.
RJ and Kai duo perhaps?
We were blinded by the idea of coaches, whether it's Tab Baldwin or Tim Cone, telling the media that little guys don't belong in FIBA unless they can defend. It really depends what are teams are willing to give up just so that they have a two-man-game option. It's hard to agree if someone like RJ or Belangel or even Jerom Lastimosa can do that as well as Kawamura because they've done it to some extent at the FIBA Asia/SEA Games (no FIBA eligibility rules) level.
At the FIBA level, Alapag scoring 18 against Senegal and Heading scoring 16 against the DR looks cute compared to what Kawamura just did. It's also hard to imagine how a scoring point guard will do when everything Cone has done is off a pinch post because it invloves the guy in the corner and the top of the key... not just the 7'2 center where the ball came from. It's that Pinoy exceptionalism pride that still insists guys like Ravena or Romeo are way better individually than guys like Kawamura or Togashi.
