Canada has good guards and wings but the big men have been lacking compared to top teams. Also changing coaches and lack of a cohesive program and commitment from NBA players in the past has made it tough. Last few years though has changed with commitment and continuity. Still need quality bigs

They have 2 bigs .. Zach Edey and Oliver Rioux will be the future of Canada bigs.. although both are slow, but with FIBA rules, they will be effective...

I think the reason Japan only hire naturalized who only plays for their domestic league (B league) due to availability.. Japan can hire NBA talent naturalized players but availability is also the question mark for players who are NBA based... Same reason why Tim cone picked Brownlee over much touted Clarkson because of familiarity and availability.. Japan having hard time choosing naturalized players because most of imports playing in B league are adjusting to the system of most of B league teams who are playing within the system... So, those imports limiting their ability to take over because they have to adjust to play within a system.. take example is Jonathan Williams, he is PBA's current best import last season, but when he played in B league, he look like ordinary baller because he has to play within the system, even he can takeover.. Although he's not played in B league but same scenario, RHJ played in Korea and he's not effective there, when he played here, he gained momentum, become a PBA champion and best import awardee, thus, Jordan picked him as naturalized player then become integral piece of Jordan national team..

Josh Hawkinson can get the job done to qualify for Olympics, but come Olympics when margin for error is smaller since you're facing the best teams, you need someone who's miles better at addressing your team's weakness. In Japan's case they need inside presence. Hawkinson can stay for Asia Cup, WC Qualifiers and such but at the highest level they need an NBA-level or at least a big with Euroleague experience. This is what Gilas did in 2014. They replaced Douthit with prime Brooklyn Net Blatche with a roster full of midgets and voila, moral victories for Team Philippines.

Yeah JB can win us the Asian Games, a game in the OQT, but if we qualified for the Olympics, Germany and France can shut down Justin Brownlee easily. Brazil did just that and look at the result. Brazil just showed us that we're not ready. In Paris, we need someone better than JB, or someone who can be JB's sidekick and Tim Cone knows that.

as he should. who's a bigger icon than LeBron James in Paris?

Yes, because football stars like Ronaldo and Messi are ineligible to play for the Olympics as the football event there has an age restriction - something that FIBA and IOC should do in Olympics basketball.

they can if they want to, as the rule allows 3 overage to join, look at the last Olympics Dani Alves was a part of the Brazil team that won the gold, and there were even some calls now in Paris for Mbappe to join the team, but with his transfer to Real Madrid he chose not to join the Olympic team and focus with the pre-season build up with Real Madrid

watching USA vs Germany now. How can the PH develop a Moritz Wagner? His game is pretty basic but very effective. Open? Shoot the three. Set a pick roll to the basket easy layup.

Football in Olympics is a small event... Big names in football don't considered Olympic football as international pedigree... Also Copa America and Euros just ended last week, so the big names needs to rest...

How many big guys with the athleticism of his exist?

Isaac Bonga, Voitman, also the same play style with Wagner bros., If Germany plays in the NBA as a team, they can make it to the playoffs... They are also playing physical against US.. something Americans should match it too...

Maybe in the future.. they shock the basketball world when they introduced home and away games.. FIBA little by little copying FIFA system of qualifications.. and it's effective.. I also dreaming of FIBA World cup as the ultimate international competition... Basketball deserves also a recognition outside Olympics.. the sport is global now.. basketball in Olympics is also not cream of the crop viewed event at Olympics anyway... Maybe 15 - 20 years probably that FIBA will introduce maybe under 23 or 25 for Olympic basketball to finally recognize FIBA World cup as main tournament for international competitions...

Speaking of NBA, this game is turning very NBA-esque. Not much ball movement, more on exploiting mismatches 1 on 1.

Obst proving you don't need to be an NBA player to be considered great. Germany playing at a pace the USA is not used to.

Germany exposed this USA team.. any vibes that this current Germany team is the resemblance of 2004 gold medal Argentina team... You have Ginobili of 2004 to Schroder 2024, you have Scola of 2004 to Thies of 2024, you have Wagner bros of 2024 to Delfino and nocioni of 2004.. I think this German team is better than 2004 Argentina team...

A very big concern for USA post 2024, when LBJ, KD or Steph retires, USA team will have trouble winning medals in either FIBA or Olympics.. new batch of Americans have no alpha Dog impact ala LeBron, KD or Steph.. Edwards is a ballhog, Tatum is weak mentally, Haliburton is not a pure scorer, while Morant, Zion, Trae, etc... are not fit with FIBA settings.. that will be a concerning issue USA will face after 2024.. and with no real long term program for USA for national team, the days of Americans ruling basketball will come to the end soon...
