Yeah that team had 2 players who makes Yuki Kawamura look like a power forward. That team was so revered for how much it punched above its weight, it really represented the average Filipino dude you see everyday in the Philippines, it's obvious why we mythicize it.

Our story in basketball reminds me of my pinoy friend who was like 159cm in school, the smallest mf around and he's like 179cm now after hitting some insane growth spurt, you love to see it. Hopefully more pinoys with sports genes hits the 190cm mark, I've seen many non-athlete Indians at that range, I hope we get there lol. It's time we start forcing basketball to love us back

Yeah, Chot's roster construction sometimes is too small internationally. He wants shot creators, so he'll have at least two or three (Castro, Terrence, Jimmy, Blatche, JC), sometimes at the expense of size, versatility, and defense.

On another note, I have the same issue with someone like Aldin Ayo. Sometimes, his rosters are too small, especially at the wing. Speed at the expense of versatility.​

imagine this gilas with a prime blatche as the NP, but i dont think sbo coukd afford a blatche type Np given than half the team plays abroad and they need tompay insurance premiums for them

hmm thats an interesting lineup actually. question really is how willing andray blatche is to follow the game plan and sacrifice his personal stats. He joined Gilas back then looking for another NBA contract. He was offered a bench role in Miami declined then it went downhill from there bouncing around CBA and getting overweight. Thats why we never got the same 2014 Andray again.

Now back to your question, I think Prime Andray in lieu of JB will work. But again, he just has to buy into the system. Prime Andray is still an NBA modern big prototype plus he has better players around him, the carry job will be lighter

As long as our players don't get too bothered by Cameroons inhuman lengths, this is a team where you can make a lead and keep it. Definitely a better scenario for gilas, I don't think we have the personnel to keep Brazil's speed advantage at bay, this is gonna look like the DR game with Tab Baldwin's oqt team, latam teams plays the kind of small ball that we are striving for with frontcourts of KQ, Tamayo, Amos and backcourts Perez, Ramos and Newsome but we have not achieved the required athleticism to do effectively.

Brazil has a good sense of humor and smarts.

Brazil is reminiscent of the 2014 Gilas Team. 3 guards and 1 modern big. Small ball.

Bruno Caboclo is a matchup problem. Can shoot the 3, can slash, pound it inside, go coast to coast. Do it all. He's like Andray Blatche but less fancy.

Marcelo Huertas is a master of the pick and roll. Good reads almost every possession. But he's 41 years old. Tire him out early by pressing.

Raul Neto, another undersized guard, only 6'2. Crafty finisher, good stroke, can catch-and-shoot, prefers to snake screens, can dissect the defense, very decisive scorer. Not sure how to stop this guy.

Yago Santos, diminutive guard. Another facilitator for Brazil. Streakyyyy shooter. Reminds me so much of Jimmy Alapag.

I say on ball screens let Caboclo touch the ball when he rolls then just funnel him to our bigs but never let these 3 guards burn us from deep or it's gonna be a reallly long night.

Can't say whether we're fvcked or not because their offense is kinda predictable compared to Latvia and Georgia. Feed the ball to the post, drive then drop, pick and roll here and there, drive and kicks to corner, repeat. Pretty basic stuff. They're just doing it with finesse and speed.

If Kai can play our size may overwhelm Caboclo, but definitely Newsome CJ and Dwight needs to keep up with the pace and tempo Brazil is playing. This is a battle of stamina.

Oftana and Tamayo are unplayable in this game sure they're just gonna get blown by each possession.

Also another strategy is to attack Caboclo early and not settle for threes. Literally hunt him and maybe we can get him into foul trouble. Without him on the floor asserting his dominance the other 3 guards can be contained.

I’m with the side that preferred Montenegro over Brazil. Shades of DR against Tabs Gilas still there. And in the WC athletic bigs running by or jumping through JMF. Well aside from JB one thing the WC team didnt have was Newsome. Newsome has been a pest on the guards. Isnt it coincidental that no guards killed us in the OQT or tuneups? Gone are the days Chot would drag Pogoys slow ass as a “defender” against quick guards. Newsome stopping drives at the perimeter and slipping through queues help our bigs a lot. The bigs can focus on their man.

But if Bitadze and Sheingelin gave JMF fits Im sure the Brazilian bigs will. Im interested in how Tim preps for this. In sure zone will be an option. But there should be more as Brazil would already be prepared. Also, this is a must win without a +18 advantage. I would be surprised if it will be still effective.

I watched the two games of Brazil, and all I can say is we have a better chance of beating Montenegro. Brazil’s speed and athleticism would be a problem for us. I dont know how CTC can counter Brazil’s advantage in that area. Maybe another episode of zone defense?

The battle against brazil will be difficult. They have many extra athletic players, and the fluidity of their offense is simple but effective. We need our best disruptive defense against this good team. An nsd focus would be nice to see.

Let us hope kai, our main center, can get through his injury. Our nt relies too much on the bull strength and solid play of abay kalabaw, brownlee and ramos. It is very risky -- almost suicidal -- to leave behind our main power forwards edu and kouame, a steady-eddy shooter like heading, and explosive attacker and point-defender abando. The pba teams need unlimited-size conferences to develop the perimeter beastfighters needed against euro and latam teams.

Niloloko lang ng pba ang team-fanatical audience, with negligible first-hand knowledge of how excellent basketball is played outside the philippines. Bilog nga bola, binibilog pa utak ng mga bopol na panatiko. Mabuti pa mpbl na masayang panoorin. Eyesores ang bottom half ng pba teams -- shamelessly corrupted farm teams -- and they know it. Only a Strong Group team against a Sanmig team in a seven-game special is something worth looking forward to.

Be prepared for high speed game of Brazil. I pray that Kai will be healty and ready to play. Without Kai we have no chance, real talk. Two more wins. God willing we will get the Olympic slot.

Brazil is more on speed, athleticsm, and they are lenghty we have to prepare. They are not as good as Latvia in shooting threes but still they are decent in 3 point shooting. Watch out for Santos, he plays like Jason Castro, not that tall but very quick.

We're a throwback 90s team. With our twin towers, we're still using bigs (inside) as an advantage. We're not shooting from deep as much as modern teams, instead we're making good use of the mid-range. And our physicality is definitely reminiscent of the 90s.

The famous adage comes to mind...it's better to be different than good.

Hopefully, the public will be patient when this team hits roadblocks. We're ahead of schedule so people's expectations are getting pretty high. What we will need is long-term stability and continuous development.

Yeah. The problem with averaged Pinoy basketball fans is that they hardly understand what learning curve is all about. Not because we beat world No. 6 Latvia & would be playing in the semis of the OQT, we can now consistently hang around with the top 16 basketball countries in the world & would be almost untouchable in Asian basketball. We must be prepared that the next time Gilas faces a world class team, we might still get blown out by such opponent. Or if we play against a elite Asian team like Lebanon or China or Jordan or Korea or Japan, kaya pa rin tayong talunin ng mga yan.

May this impressive campaign (so far) of Gilas in the OQT does not give us false sense of security.

When people talk of Brazil's speed, they meant the physical attributes of the individual players: ie Caboclo's footspeed advantage over all of our bigs, Yago's footspeed advantage over all of our guards. The fact that they have less posession per 40 minutes actually makes this matchup a bit more intimidating, it means this team is going to try to play a smart game despite the athletic edge they will have over us.

I remember coach Tab's all-amateur Gilas team in 2021 almost scoring an upset against mighty Serbia team in the OQT (Gilas at that time was fresh from an historic back to back wins over long time tormentor South Korea). Yet when we played the Dominican Republic which was supposedly an inferior team compared to Serbia, eh natambakan pa nga tayo ng DR by about 27 pts. Then a few weeks later we played in an invitational tournament in Amman, Jordan, Egypt beat us. Then Jordan beat us twice.

that’s why we need to control the tempo and the pace. we dont play to their level, they have to catch up to ours.

this is not 2021 OQT where the latin americans flat out outran and gassed us out. That Gilas team was full of amateurs they didnt know how to respond skill wise and physically. we also did not have dwight, and we had someone like Mike nieto guarding athletic guards like Liz. This team is full of pros who played high level international and championship level games since what? the SEA games last year? And they played together, won together, compared to that pandemic cadet team.

This is without Caboclo and a different coach but I believe is still a very similar team identity. Brazil is like a hybrid between Argentina and DR/PR, Argentina's pace and tactics with DR-like players, obviously will have some mix-ups under Petrovic to keep the opponents guessing. What would've worked when we go against latam teams is practicing our players against the likes of Balkman and Mikey Williams.

Just stay disciplined and don't get caught up in the moment. Also someone outside of JB will need to rise to the occasion. If Kai can play he needs to show he's better than Caboclo who's already out of the league. For Junemar this is just icing on the cake of his illustrious career, show everybody that kalabaw lang ang tumatanda.

A lot is at stake especially for our young players Tamayo, KQ, Dwight, Oftana and Kai... their output in this game might dictate the amount of bag and the type of opportunities that will be offered to them in the future.
