we are not the best Asian team but those supposedly best and tall Asian teams (China, Iran, Lebanon, and Jordan) cannot beat Europeans for the past five years or so. Ironically, Japan and Philippines did and I'm happy about it.

Reminds me of what happened in the 2014 FIBA World Cup where we got those "moral" victories against teams like Croatia, Argentina & Puerto Rico. We thought that if we can hang with those teams & almost scored upsets, then we should be beating Asian powerhouse teams. Which of course didn't really happen as right after the 2014 World Cup, we sucked in the 2014 Asian Games.

Triangle Offense very much alive. Cone explains his love for the system at the 7:35 mark

In the post game presser, CTC emphasized that how he's going to run the team since its the system he is most familiar with.

Although China already achieved too beating France in u17 event… still another success by another Asian team… I don’t know why China is good in youth category while when they reached seniors, they became weak… is CBA become harmful to the development of Chinese basketball?

in youth teams they're known to use older players

I always disagree that Japan is better than us… they may have better system, but with Tim cone, we are not far behind, and we have better players than them… many people overrating this Japanese team… there is nothing special on Japan (in my opinion)… they have always hard time against teams who are bigger and taller than them… and we are bigger (in terms of size) than Japan…

Japan is better than us in World Cup 2023. That was still Chot Reyes era.

2023 Asian Games and 2024 is different.

Serious question, could a full force Lebanon who did not participate in Asian Games beat an RHJ - led Jordan team? Jordan was the strongest in the Asian Games. Bu I doubt they can matchup w Euro teams.

We beat them fair and square with Bohannon and Al Dwairi with our Team B.

New Zealand beats Croatia. Philippines beats Latvia.

This is a day of upsets.

I want Philippines to beat Georgia. Those Georgians think that Latvia dropped their game intentionally against us (does not make sense). Beating them will put things into their senses and shut these Georgians up.

Congrats Gilas.

Does anyone know why Zagars did not play?
So nice to watch this after the youth game nightmare

Quite refreshing to hear the official FIBA commentators instead of the Filipino ones, Magoo Marjon would have gone apeshit if there was a Filipino commentary lmao

NZ and Gilas didnt play like Asian teams. Anyway lol at Georgia, but yeah Gilas better be careful and ready as they are desperate

There is a different pulse or cadence with the way Gilas plays. It is slow down, deliberate, and off timing. Sumabay ang Latvia and it threw them off rythm. They played our game and by the time they adjusted it was too late.

This version of Gilas is still in its infancy, imagine what they can do in 4 years. That is why he has to stick with his 12-14 player pool and chose JB as NP. There is no substitute for team chemistry and growing together in the same system.

We have our preferred players and fantasy rosters. But since the Asian Games, I will never question CTC's decisions again. He definitely knows what he is doing and we are just armchair coaches. Definitely the greatest coach in Philippine Basketball. He made possible what past coaches, chot, tab, rajko, have failed. Let's trust the process.

Medical staff's decision, the Latvian coach said. "Too risky" he added, "we're saving him for the next games"

What a historic win. Go Gilas.

Many doubted the JMF-Kai combo. I believed they can pull it off because they had great team effort and chemistry...Manilacone specialties.

Coach Tim and JB should never have to pay for their drinks in the Philippines.

I was one of those who doubted the Kai-June Mar combo because in the past, that wouldn't work. Turns out, they hustled their asses off, and our perimeter defenders did enough.

I wanna see that later against Georgia, and hopefully in the KO rounds.

I was one of those doubters :) glad to be proven wrong as always

It is really hard to defeat defeatism in this forum. Decades of life has taught me to go for what could be gained. Not for what could be lost. Our kids are from up diliman, dlsu and ust -- they all do very well because there is no mental resistance against achieving excellence. It was never about the school, but the learning system and work ethics.

As i said, our nt players are not senior citizens, and neither are the latvians. They got outcoached and outdefended. Their hometown energy support was also very good.

So, balik sa babaw ng bangko. A hard game like the latvian one can hurt what is basically a 5-man deep team like our nt. But that was supposed to be why there are 12 players. You need a magnificent seven off the bench that can explosively give a world of pain against opponents. Buti na lang, there are only 40 not 48 minutes of high intensity war, so our boys can handle the heat.

Right now, tamayo, kikiam, oftana, cj, aguilar and the boy wonder amos are asian class. They are genuinely good, but not the SU-57Ms you need to shoot down overhyped american F-35 ballers and tom cruises in flames. The young ones need at least an extra 3 years of pba gladiatorial fightback experience to mature. The two old ones need laser focus only.

As in boxing, styles make fights. 300 billion pesos wealth says pacquiao understands that principle.

If available local upgrades are all we have, then edu, kouame, baltazar, qmb, abando and heading can fight through a euroball and latam elite phalanx.

Against say, the us, french and spanish teams, you need a 300 porsyento taguro boost from the likes of jordan clarkson and jalen green.

Then never get an incompetent mafiosi "coach unano pusod". Walang alam. He thinks that the chemistry of yakuza loyalty and favoritism is the key to championships. The nt must always deep select for elite tourneys like the olympic and world cup games.

The total team effort and chemistry was key. That's why I mentioned it in the preparation games, it was starting to take shape. It's what Manilacone is good at, guys do their jobs and a lot of times guys elevate their ability. When the sum becomes greater than the parts and everyone is on the same page...magic can happen, and it did last night.

Georgia will not be as proud as Latvia and they might employ some zone. And now they also have more scouting reports to work with, and not to mention it's such a quick break between games (fatigue). It will be tough, but if they come in with the same mindset, energy and teamwork, I like our chances.

In hindsight, the move was brilliant. The upper body strength of JMF is world-level and the length of Kai is world-level. We had some advantages with our bigs. Last night, that was our first punch against Latvia, it rocked them and they never quite recovered.

At the end of the day, you just have to "take more than you give."

Against Georgia, the bench has to step up. They have to provide quality minutes so the main guys can get some rest.
