How are the Japs doing their DDO? Catch and drive, PnR?

But to be fair, we did have high offensive ratings in Asia Cups under Chot. The difference between 2013 and 2017 and 2022 was that in 2013, we defended far better. It's not really the offense that won and lost medals for us, it was defense.

From what I saw in YT, I saw most of Kawamura points came from one on one moves. He beats his opponent by dribbling, His last shot was dribbling for ten seconds before shooting a fading away to the side three points. Similar to most of his plays with Yokohama. Same with Tominaga with quick pull ups but still with dribbbles and only one from a set shot

we will need the scrambling defense we also did with our team in 2013 and 2016.

Even in ibn we emphasize defense like a famous ibner said, how in the hell meralco scored 74 points against Gilas? Now Mustangs scored 64, I was surprised given that I see Cabaggie, Mccarthy amd Oscar lopez scored a bundle

It's mitigated by the fact that the triangle is a system offense. All it needs is someone who can get the ball across halfcourt.

kurekek and brownlee is therea s the secondary playmaker so you will really build the point guard skills imo if youre dweet or kq

Definitely some semblance to the DDO,mixed it up with catch and shoot offense.Interesting to see once the Japanese have the whole team how this offense will have to go up another notch.

Hot take: that last roster spot should be given to...... Jordan Heading.

imo athleticism of guys like Lebron Lopez, Rhenz Abando, (injured) AJ Edu and (injured) Jamie Malonzo won't be missed in Latvia. They have the chemistry and the size just need to have someone to hit threes consistently.

This OQT is not about match ups and exploiting mismatches. This is not the Olympics, yet, where we need to field our best talented players. In this tournament we just have to be highly efficient and a huge part of that is hitting open shots that CTC's system creates offensively.

Defensively, our bigs can hold their own, get stops here and there. Wings can move their feet well laterally. Guards like CJ Perez and Newsome are pesky and most importantly, experienced in the FIBA game. Scottie won't be missed here as well, effective in the Asian level but look at his woeful performance in the World Cup. Just run the system they've been running since the Asian Games with this lineup but again, we need X-factors who can spread the floor like Mason Amos and Jordan Heading.

Shots off the dribble and penetration can be taken care of Oftana and KQ. Overall, good lineup composition, just give the last spot to a bonafide shooter.

There is no last spot. Pogoy's inclusion was denied.

I'm beginning not to like CJ Perez in this team with the way he played last night. I feel among the current Gilas players, he has the least contribution to the team. He has suspect 3-pt shooting & doesn't really have playmaking skills. At least with Chris Newsome you have a reliable lock down defender & a good playmaker as well.

Calvin Oftana may have thrown nothing but bricks last night but we all know he can shoot better than that. Malas langvtalaga sya kagabii. On a normal game Oftana can give you outside shooting & some defense.

Of course the most outstanding player for Gilas last night was Dwight Ramos, & it didn't come as a surprise. Among the guards/wings, Ramos has the best playmaking skills. And Dwight is also a reliable wing defender.

Is it just me or does Oftana have a slower shot? Multiple times he would get good looks but be contested when defenders caught up, also I thought he didn’t look good fighting through screens exposing his chest to the screener instead of trying to be skinny?

I guess CJ prefers to have a offense like Castro had, spread out and he has the ball on top of the key. Similar to Gilas plays before WC 2023 stint.

I agree with Oftana, his games is not consistent when playing for Gilas.

Then ask Tim Cone!!! It will not help your arguments over here... Are you better than CTC? If he thinks Pogoy is better than Heading then may magagawa kaba? BTW, I'm not Pogoy fan either... check your facts and check my previous post...

Classic Robert. “Mas magaling ka pa sa coach” bs.
Hahahaha. You’re really such a clown.

Anyway, good thing that Pogoy’s Latvian VISA can’t be secured on time. Wew! He could have caused disaster for us down there, shooting us in the foot. Time for Perez to miraculously improve on defense and on taking care of the basketball. Making those open threes won’t hurt either. We’re in deep trouble if both Newsome and CJ are shooting duds and mishandling as ball carriers.

Yeah the tuneup was nothing more than what it's supposed to be. It was competitive in spurts, but ultimately it won't change my mind that Gilas is getting blown tf out in the OQT. In this game vs the Mustangs, there wasn't anything I saw that convinced me this team is ready for high level FIBA games just because it was just a nice little show. Hopefully they figure it out in the tuneups vs Turkey and Poland or else the are getting smashed for us to see.

Ramos is the standard that Pinoy players should aspire to play like... simple game, effective movements, and he makes open shots. JB got his one on ones and was cooking. JMF's active hands bothered Deguara while Kai seriously tried to match him strength-for-strength with hands up but was more succesful as help defender when JMF was there. Tamayo at this point defends way better than Japeth. Even KQ and Amos got run-ins.

Hate to say this 'coz I'm a La Salle guy, but Newsome is the most important piece or this depleted team. He got players like Perez and Oftana involved... tried his best to stay on Lopez who exposed this team defensively... without him, no one else pushes the ball up court.

was not able to watch the game last night. based on the comments here, mostly from FB and the vlogs, I take it fans arent happy? I think the most consistent comment I could see was we had poor FT%. some Kai fans wanting their idol some more pt. its a tune up game, so not sure why PT is a prob. outside the FT% its CJ thats getting a lot of heat.

that said, i am sure we will get a bit better after the tune up games versus Turkiye and Poland. im not familiar with Poland but Turkiye should give us a really reality check before Latvia and Georgia. if we do well against them, we should be fine, and hopefully be in a position to pull the rug under Georgia. still a tall task but i think that is more realistic than Latvia.

Haven't finished watching the game but that Gilas starting 5 has size. JMF, Kai, Brownlee, Oftana and Dwight.

Trippy to see Oscar Lopez being a standout in asian circles. Saw him play and train since he was in high school.

There’s obvious bias coming into play here. There’s always been a mandate to use as much pba players as you can. You would need to be Dwight , Kai good to be above that .

Yeah because the powers that be are affiliated with the PBA. Just like the Ateneo bias during Tab's time. Even then its not that simple if what Snow is saying is true. Its the PBA's Bolick who is blacklisted.

I wouldn't mind the bias if the players were good at their roles. June Mar, Scottie (defense), Newsome, JB now, and guys like Ange, Navarro, Dwight, and even SJ during Tab's time.

The problem would arise when guys like Pogoy, Troy, Wright are favored. CJ is getting close to this territory.

Korean were better shooters. The difference is both Japan and Gilas 2014 we were not afraid to penetrate like how Jimmy and Castro did it.

I think that kind of offense worked because it was shot creators like Jimmy and Castro, this current team doesn’t have that kind of shot creation. Also I didn’t watch Japan vs Australia game but saw highlights, one of the differences is Japan has good spacing, they have guys who can shoot really stretching out Australia, also Australia I don’t think had any good rim protectors, but another difference is they had a Kawamura who can penetrate and score around the rim, same with baba. Early on I. The game as an example Oftana tried testing Deguarra’s rim protection and got his shot blocked, also another player tried(can’t remember who)and got blocked so this Mustang team had a stronger interior defense making it harder to penetrate and score especially since this team lacks ball handlers who could do that also the spacing on this team when Junmar and Kai were on at the same time wasn’t good.

They are trying to make the Ravenas and chot the scape goat .

Scottie was awful in the world stage but he’s the PBA’s poster boy . It’s really messed up you can move one way or another with the management of a team but the same politics on a different spectrum will be in play. Tim Cone was pushing for Kiefer to be cut in the wc . Pogoy was basically a none negotiable as they didn’t want Parks, heading, thirdy or even Abando taking mins over a pba guy.

Pogoy was decent tho. He played well

Yeah, Pogoy did make up for his poor performances in the past when he shot more decently in the WC. The only egregiously bad play he had was that stupid steal attempt against Angola.

I wouldn't really mind a lot of PBA players. Just pick the right ones, meaning the ones who have performed well, and the ones whose skillset can reasonably translate to the FIBA stage. Of course, age and roster balance has to be considered as well, and you may have to drop underperforming players.
