BG u18 Thread

andy gemao is still eligible in this tournament

Maybe we can include Ludovice, Alas, and Daja for this tournament. Hope CJ Amos can turn things around so we can include them too.

What is the cutoff for this tournament?

Still 18 or younger as of now are Bahay, Harris, Bayla, Konov, Gemao, Competente, Gamber, Nieto, Jones.

Cutoff's 18 or younger by January 1, 2024 (meaning January 1, 2006). All guys in that group but Gemao and Jones turn 18 in 2023.

If it's 18 or younger by January 1, 2024 Bayla, Harris, Konov and that batch won't age out (They're 17 or just turned 18 now). Maybe you mean younger than 18?

I think those guys only met the cutoff last time because they made it a u17 instead of u16 in light of the pandemic. So now its back to regular programming, their overage for u18. Maybe we will see some of those who got cut last time but still meet the cutoff?

Meaning anyone whose birthdate is January 1, 2006 or later is eligible.

But anyone whose birthdate is earlier than January 1, 2006, he's already overaged.

Para hindi na complicated, let's simplify it nalang:

Those players who will turn 18 years old this year are already overaged for next year's FIBA Asia U-18 tournament.

So for instance if one's birthday is December 31, 2005, overaged na sya.

Yes, got it. Too bad, most of them are still 18 on Jan 2024.

There's a very good book "Outliers" that has a theory about how birthdates affect chances of becoming an elite athlete.

Correct.
that's becoz last year's Asian U-16 tournament was supposed to be held in 2021, but was postponed to 2022 becoz of pandemic. Syempre those players that are supposed to be 16 yrs old in 2021 had turned 17 yrs old by 2022.

That's why last year's Asian U-16 tournament was actually Asian U-17 tournament.

I’ve been checking the FIBA official Calendar every now and then on any forth coming events for FIBA under tourney(s) and so far, only World U17 for Men on June 29 to July 7, 2024 and U17 for Women on Jul. 13 to 21, 2024 was posted on it’s official website, however there’s a scheduled FIBA World U19 from June 28 to Jul. 6, 2025 and FIBA World U19 for Women from Jul. 12 to 20, 2025 maybe that’s it.

Anyway if FIBA Asia U18 for Men pushes thru next year, the age requirement must be born in Jan. 1, 2006 and above. As per Sir Dave’s revelation about finances are not really a big issue on SBP and the overall landscape of Pilipinas Basketball compared to other nation then enticing some young high profile hafus in our campaign next year may not encounter many challenges. I hope SBP may somehow adhere to the public’s clamor of solidifying our youth program for the next cycle in 2027 up to 2031 then I think it’s high time to build the foundation using the FIBA’s playbook on eligibility for youth player(s) who already played for a sanctioned event and to those who hasn’t registered on any National Federation.

Assuming SBP was headed by basketball minded people and adhere to the clamor of the fans despite the fact they are not really answerable to the general public being a private entity whose day to day operation and expenses are not thru taxpayer’s money.
6’6 Dylan Harper 17 born Mar. 2, 2006 - If issues surrounding Dylan’s “I’m not playing anymore” due to the(dismal) recent 4[SUP]th[/SUP] placed finished suffered by U19 USA team in FIBA World U19 are indeed true then luring him to switch allegiance may not impose many challenges considering both his brother RHJ and parents especially the Phillippine born mother already answered that if ever there’s an offer here to coach a girls team she will not hesitate to come over and that would be a good sweetener in the negotiation table.

6’8 Jireh Tumaneng 16 yr. old – he is Philippine born and eligible despite spending quite a number of years at New Zealand

6’7 Aries Borja born 2006 – he is Philippine born and eligible

6’4 Caden Shaver born 2006 – I dunno much of his game but this Fil-Nation Select find player despite being under the radar may pull of some surprises if given a chance to be part of the training pool

6’5 Vyc Miller born 2006 – despite being in top 20 for 2024 class and a 5 star(?)recruit, USA basketball hasn’t invited(?) the kid on it’s training camp and I think it’s a great opportunity to offer the kid and his family if they are willing to be part of the long term program in preparation for WC 2027 and 2031.

6’7 Josh Ples born 2006 – he is Philippine born and eligible. with his training experience at Pao Gasol Academy it is no brainer that inviting the kid in the training camp would be beneficial moving forward.

6’8 Jayden Harper 18 yr. old – if he is born 2005 then he is ineligible to play in the U18 tourney. The only challenge for now is that he only obtained(?) his PH Passport a few weeks or a month.

I’d keep an eye on Jayden for future FIBA tournaments. He could be our next NP mainstay after Brownlee retires.

If he makes the NBA, then it’s a different story.
