2023 SEA Games (Cambodia)

Of all the SEA Games basketball I've fllowed in the last 30 yrs, this edition is the most competitive. Which makes our winning of the gold medal much more significant.

But due to the new format, we were unable to compete against Thailand, a formidable team in its own right. It would have been thrilling to witness a decisive match between Gilas and Thailand.

In hindsight, I would have wanted someone other than maybe Arvin and CJ. Those guys can be replaced by a couple youngsters.

Yeah, I get that we should have pros to help these guys win and calm them down, but the SEA Games is pretty much our only avenue of development, so we have to maximize the opportunity.

With the improved competition in SEA Games now, 3 -4 youngsters should be enough to get experience and not compromise the strength of the team.

I miss Jones cup, the de facto gilas team b ateneo played in 2018..this is the right avenue to test the young guys, indonesian locals are improving.. in that 3rd place game Propser and beane didn even played major minutes

if only Kouame gets an exception, i'd love a big rotation of Kai, Edu, Kouame and whoever else

It may be asking too much but a frontline of Kai, Kouame,Edu and Philipps for the next 15 years would be awesome hehe

Slow down. Basketball in the country has a proud but awful practice of babying players under 24 in a Metro Manila university for 4-5 years then have them do PBA D-League for 7 games with no guarantee that they make it to the pros.

I'll bring up the Paul Desiderio vs Jason Tatum argument over and over again if I have to. Same age, same level at U16. One plays 5 years in college, goes to the PBA D-League, gets drafted the following year... by then, the other one is already a 3-year NBA pro.

Was it USA Basketball's job to develop Tatum or they just took whatever's available: a 1-and-done college player that turned out to be an elite pro? Now, what's available in the Philippines at levels after U19? UAAP. NCAA. PBA D-League. It's this double standard of a student athlete that's messing up the development of players that could be useful at the men's level. Only Kai was able to do something more, the rest can only hope to get signed by a B.League or KBL Team. They're already wasting at least 3 years of their "development" if they're PBA rookies at 24. Just pathetic. There will be more Japeth-like players than there will be Chris Tiu students playing college ball.

OK, let me rephrase. I just don't want us to continue the practice of overly relying on the PBA, especially if the season structure means that training and availability will be compromised. Use the collegiate leagues and foreign leagues if we have to. If not now, then the future.

I agree though that one-and-done culture has to be more common in the Philippines, so that the talented players can better develop. Better chance of improvement when playing or practicing against better competition. Yeah, the college culture here holds back the potential of our good players.

The 2025 SEAG in Bangkok would be a good tournament for these players to play together. The other teams in the SEA are no longer holding back. The SEAG should be viewed as a training ground for current and future FIBA mainstays. No more sending ineligibles who have no chance of being considered locals next time.

Reclaiming the gold wouldn't have been an issue if we had reacted properly against Indonesia in the first place. Thank God we learned our lesson this time.

And besides, Brownlee would still have been there. You sure we won't medal against Indonesia and Thailand if college players will compose half the squad, and half of vets? That's exactly what vets are for. You fucking balance winning and development. Besides, the kids will still have talent. And with a good gameplan, we can win a medal.

And if people getting mad leads to the resignation of these dickheads in SBP, then let them get mad.

I also want it to be a Gilas Cadet in SEA games but the other teams are getting pros and naturalized players. Even Korea had issue with Thailand before. How the thailand big was able to score 35pts on our College players under CTab. They still won big thou.

You see how vets are better in defense and composure than college players most of the time. Philips has no offense, Lastimosa stolen alot of times and cant orchestrate like Ross and Amos will not be able to rebound agains pros. We could not always really on Brownlee to play 35 minutes and do it all in his age.

If you can stop Pinoy bashing players and coach if we lose the gold in SEA then that can work.

And to think jakrawan played sub par this sea games..especially with entry of breunig..

So Mike Philips joined mason amos as the Gilas wildcards?.. Brandon will be given a chance as FIBA wll defeat their own logic in this

We can't. The competition was already stiff in 2015 for a team of college players, if Tab didn't have Douthit... they'd surely lose to teams with pro-level players without a naturalized player. 2017 had Jong and Chot coaching a mix of pros and college players. 2019 was all about "sending the best" because we were the hosts. It's now a farce with teams like Cambodia who don't give a damn about FIBA eligibility and countries like Thailand and Indonesia who have way more firepower.

Issue is womens team, we cant be defeated by 2 point shooting team and as for the 5v5 they deafted that team with pierre louis on board..as for 3x3.. the best prospects.. if brownlee can play let him play in asiad

Philippines didn't give a damn also about FIBA eligibility....how many players did Gilas use that are not FIBA eligible...we had Rosser, Standhardinger, Ross, Phillips,

If we are to count American blood in Gilas, you can count 5 (Brownlee count as 1 while Standhardinger, Rosser, Ross, Lassiter, Amos, Phillips, Perez and Newsome count as 4). Cambodia team American blood is counted as 5.5 so not that different.

If you count American passports, Gilas will have 8 while Cambodia will have only 6

I think Malonzo works best as a 3 especially against taller opponents, he was only used as a 4 because of the lack of bigs.

I already said no Kouame. It seems to me that a big man rotation of CS, Rosser and Philipps is better than that of Kai, Japeth and Malonzo. For this reason this SEA team can defeat our Fiba team. Let's say the Fiba NP is JC. Of course in my book, a healthy Kouame is still our best Fiba big.

perez is a homegrown. raised, studied and residing in the philippines. fluent in tagalog, ilocano and pangasinense. can't even speak in english.

philipps studies college here in the philippines and a fluent tagalog speaker as well. newsome, on the other hand, studied here in the philippines. in a way, you can feel localness from them. they are no way mercenaries like those from cambodia.

Do these mercenaries have a distinct advantage over our Gilas players....not really....Our 8 players have the same body type as their 6 players.....7 of our players have the same education/upbringing as their 6 players....not one of the Cambodian players played in the NBA (I think) unlike Brownlee who played in the NBA.

Anong gagawin mo jan coach? Titira ng 3 points? We escaped a technical foul. The greatest artista coach. I still remember his jumping up-down playdate with the Greek referee.

you know what, these are the type of players PBA must capitalize on. No doubt were still the best league in SEA region why don't they allow teams to hire Southeast Asian, West Asian, East Asian imports + 2 world imports during Gov/Commisioners Cup to add flavor and competition to the league.

Tyler Lamb, Grahita, Oscar Lopez, Christian Juzang, DMX, Wael Arakji, El Darwich in the PBA? + NBA caliber & journeymen-type imports? That MIGHT stir interest and sell tickets again.
