2023 SEA Games (Cambodia)

The mission of this version of Gilas is supposed to be the SEAG Redeem Team, meaning it's all about beating Indonesia (team Cambodia is just an unexpected aside).

There should be absolutely no reason or excuse for us not to be ready against Indonesia.

I think the eligibility rule of Asian Games basketball is similar to that of the previous SEA Games. Meaning a player of a certain country is considered local if he is a natural born citizen of that country regardless of when he secured the passport of the country he wants to represent. I think that has been the rule of Asia Games & SEA Games eversince until this edition of SEA Games in which host Cambodia modified the rule in which allowed a player who is not a natural born citizen of a certain country to become a local player provided that he obtained passport of his adopted country.

From a implementation perspective verifying grant of a 2nd citizenship via "natural born " vs naturalization (defined as acquiring a 2nd citizenship after original (e.g congress ) is really not feasible verifiable , especially by just the Asian games eligibility committee.
residency however is easy verifiable (simple look up league of player )
for all intents and purposes really are ineligibles are as naturalized or as American as the Cambodian imports legally. What differentiates our ineligibles from Cambodian imports is residency ( ineligibles play in the PBA) , I'm serious. , That is why we shouldn't be so quick to judge others without looking at our selves 1st. We are gaming the rules as well, just differently. (We grant 2nd citizenship to Americans and establish PBA residency), there are many ways of granting (based on relationships (parents) etc, but legally it's still naturalized to a 2nd citizenship)

Isnt it unfair for the Indonesians that they have to fight Gilas a day after they fought Thailand. Unlike Gilas that had some rest (and with an easy opponent Singapore as their last opponent), Indonesia had no rest.

Yes, it is really unfair. Less than 24 hours after that hard fought win over Thailand, the Indons will have to deal with Gilas who had the benefit of a day off & had an easy assignment in Singapore in its last game in the elims. But actually nadamay lang tayo sa Cambodia who I think consciously set this schedule so as it will get a day off going into the semis while its opponent will get no day off going into the semis. We are just lucky to be grouped with the host. So in a sense, both Gilas & Cambodia get the benefit of this scheduling while Indonesia & Thailand will be on the disadvantageous side.

This is a break that we didn't ask for but was given to us. Maybe this is the break that coach Chot badly needs to avoid further dissaster.

REALISTIC IMPLEMENTABLE ELIGIBILITY RULES EXPLAINED

If people remember the Fil Sham issue , were the Senate was inquiring if Asi had established roots/ relatives in Samar , you will realise the difficulty of verifying heritage at even the National level, much more the International governance level, the granularity at the regional provincial level verification is just not doable at the International governance level. (each and every local authority can have it's own unique independent way of establishing lineage to a country (a high priest Moari monk can grant lineage to Jason Mamoa) . So what is FIBA or any International governance eligibility committee left with for verification? There are only 2 things to go by for as universal verifiable fact , they are Immigration documents ( passport) and records of residency (includes parents former residency) , so limited to using those 2 sources of verifiable truth a governing body can draft it's level of restrictions . e.g. by what age a passport is required , how many years of residency is required , this goes for both the player and his parents or grandparents if one is to use heritage as one of the basis. (it's not realistic however for FIBA or SEAG to be able verify residents of parents )

if they use fiba rules in 3x3, still possible we can field Cstan, oftana, mikey and brownlee in it on asian games..and thats freaking legal..or worse Mikey, clarkson, brownlee cstan

Same legal if Cambodia fields 4 NP in 3x3 FIBA rules, from a legal basis there is actually no difference

The difference legally is if you add a residency requirement ( as Brownlee, Mikey are all PBA residents , while Cambodia NP are not)

Looking at the Indo box score, DMX or Derrick Michael isn't there. Is he not playing or are they hiding him?

watching this first half of thailand vs. cambodia, I still can't believe why we were blown out by this cambodian team.. not just lost but blown out... hayyyy....

Mental. They don't think they can win a team of Americans

Btw some of the Cambodian players player in first tier Europe and G league. They are like legitly good and just a notch below NBA level players. If they don't get in foul trouble gold is def a huge possibility.

It's actually refreshing to watch SEA basketball seeing them at a higher level..
Cambodia and Thailand level is decent

Jakrawan has bulked up a lot but is still soft compared to Morgan and Peterson. He's in the Junmar category of dominating his own league but relegated to a mere rim protector at this level.

This has been the strongest edition of SEA Games for a very long time. Nice seeing SEA teams giving Gilas a scare. My concern, though, is Cambodia. If they intend to extend their program in FIBA, this practice is futile as they can only utilize one naturalized player. If the intention is otherwise, then Cambodia is all good.

Thailand and Indonesia can carry their competitive level in FIBA because many of their Thai-Fors and Indo-Fors are eligible.

Cambodia has no illusions of making out of Division B in FIBA Asia. This is all about this hosting of the SEA games and giving the home crowd a good show and something to be proud of, however hollow.
