2023 SEA Games (Cambodia)

I think with more training and the addition of other players Tab's team could've been more athletic and stronger than the one against DR. We had a good matchup against Serbia. Without Jokic and some others but that was still Serbia. I think Nenad was already hired by then. Nenad could have given us more options on offense. Athleticism is good. But a good system, with discipline, training and decent homegrown athleticism (with a healthy Kouame) can still beat a DR team in my opinion. But of course this is all hypothetical and we will never know. DR seems to be a better version of this Cambodia team. As of now, I don't see a rotation of Kai, Japeth, JC, Dwight, Scottie, Malonzo and Heading can defeat them.

Dom Rep even without their NBA players KAT and Duarte can beat this Cambodian team…

Simple question of responsibility on due diligence

Will the SBP make efforts to lodge for Phillips eligibility , at just a fraction of the effort and cost it spent on tryong to appeal for Clarkson eligibility, (note i said appeal a decision, not just file application). May kasama falsification .

I was wrong. I really thought that Gilas would beat Cambodia. It turned to another heartache, another frustration. So what is main factor of this debacle? Who is to blame of my disappointments? Is it myself because of my high expectation? Is it the SBP’s failure to lure key players? Or the players’ half-hearted stand or effort to win? Or is it Chot’s losing respect from Gilas players that they just play by the flow? The players are well aware how Chot was being booed by his own people and subjected to taunts in last FIBA qualifiers so somehow it has made me think that players are lukewarm in their games. Hence Chot failed to motivate them. Therefore he is the main culprit.

To me it's about prioritizing objectives. If the goal as Chot says is to qualify for the Olympics via placing 1st in Asia in the WC, then absolutely any activity requiring resources in the World cup year , being just 3 months out , should be focused on that single goal , nothing else. So Cambodia to our unexpected surprise ( we had no idea of their level) can reasonably replicate a Dominican Republic team. ( in our WC group) ., so therefore we should have used the opportunity to at the very least expose our potential FIBA eligible players to that level. Kung talo, talo..
it's so short sighted to try to win the Gold by all means by using 5 NP ( FIBA classification) , like what value does that contribute to in the overall objective ? Pogi points, what ? like even if we won, so what ... it's not actually history to win gold in SEA

If my memory serves me right, the 2007 PH team also defeated an all-PBA import team in an exhibition game where Menk scored the game-winning basket. The key factor was team chemistry, which the 2007 team and the 2012 Jones Cup team certainly possessed, but is lacking in this current roster.
Yeah, chemistry is a huge huge factor. U need chemistry not just in offense but defense as well. Meaning having a better chemistry improves the team's offense & defense, so that's additional points for your team (improve offense) & less points for the opposing team (becoz of improve defense). An improve chemistry could make a 10 to 15-pt difference. In a close game, team chemistry/cohesion can make a big difference in the outcome of the game.

I don’t get it why he is talking of Olympics. We are World Cup host our main goal is to win games and to reach beyond preliminary round or group stage. He should focus on that.

my take: Chot and the other people involved (PBA&SBP) may already have their final 12 in the WC. They probably playing the media around for couple of months before they announced the favourite 12. Hugot will be Kai, JC, Dwight, Park and the Ravenas.

That’s chot (he likes getting into the media and giving pasabog LOL) and fair enough coz the goal to get into the olympics is to win more games (as much as possible).

Team USA always had superior advantage on speed and athleticism against European/Americas teams, but several of those teams found a way to win. The teams that did it had the advantage on "cohesion" they were all national teams that have been playing together since they were young.

The winning formula has been public knowledge for more than a decade. I guess we didn't get the memo.

You can't emulate European teams. Reason being is their height. They are even taller than USA players. Guards are like 6'4 to 6'8 and 7'0 big man are plentiful. In Philippines, if you are 7'0 you will play in the PBA even if you are below average player because there is lack of 7 footers. In Europe you can be a decent 7 foot player and prob just play in their 2nd tier or 3rd tier league. What they lack from athleticism (as compared to USA) they make up with discipline team ball and shooting.

It should probably the same with what metta said. Cohesion would give the team the text you mentioned (in block).

The answer is right in front of MVP: Panlilio

He has screwed up big time by appointing Chot Reyes and his incompetent son as head coaches. These clowns need to go. Now.

If Chot failed in this seagames and assuming sbp would have coaching change, tim cone comes from my mind. Reason betis that SMC is now major sponsor of gilas in WC? Correct me if I’m wrong.

You know guys, If you read foreign social media sites, especially fellow ASEAN Thais, Indons, Malaysia, Vietnam, and others, They still cheer Gilas despite they lose to Cambodia (w/ multiple naturalized players).. All of ASEAN participants don't like what Cambodia is doing today... You should guys continue support PHL whatever happens... If Indons, Thais, etc... adore PHL fight then why his countrymen mocking Filipino squad? Don't throw the bus yet, This is not over, Is this what Filipinos' character if they lose? Where is "Bayanihan" spirit among Filipinos? All of ASEAN countries have massive hate towards the host right now... I hope that Cambodia should not allow to host again in any SEAG event in the future... They destroying the integrity of the competition, The true meaning of "Sportsmanship"....

We can't emulate European teams? Well, what makes us think we can emulate Team USA. And newsflash, we're not out to beat Team USA or Spain. What we need is to consistently beat our East/West Asian neighbors first, then on to other higher regions.

With the advent of pace-and-space, size is not the key anymore. You still need "adequate" size, of course this is basketball. But, you do not have to be the biggest anymore. Puerto Rico beat USA with the heroics of Carlos Arroyo.

What all the teams that beat USA had was great teamwork/cohesion. A team that is sharpened by years of togetherness can beat superior teams that are ill-prepared.

eligible na daw, pero may mga basketball godfathers na natakot baka mag abroad..(If schonny got one why cant Mike who was in the country earlier and much younger)..or makes me wonder since he isnt an east west boy, that athletic forward slot is reserved to caelum harris haha

Nevermind all these BS. Just support the team unconditionally. -Robert

Schonny Winston was either born here or got his passport early. He didn’t need to get an exemption. Same case as Malonzo and Adams.

The Phillips brothers, along with Balungay, Lucero, and Galinato are prime candidates for a Slaughter/Newsome style exemption from FIBA because they began their basketball careers here and got their passports early in life (just not before their 16th birthday).

I said it before during the early months of this thread that this team deserves only a bronze medal finish because if ever we reclaim that SEA gold chances are those stakeholders will surely won’t learn their lessons and keeps on implementing every Monday and 1 week full training before the actual competition commence.

With that historical defeat at the hands of the Cambos and the Oligarch’s recent tweet post I totally agree that he is playing Pontius Pilate on this one, it’s just that a culture of Nepotism and too much politics at SBP are very much obvious that despite the many failures of Chot Reyes and his son, Al Panlilio and Ricky Vargas at the federation he had no balls to kick out those fellow grandpa and replace them instead with people who knows the intricacies and technical know-how of running the NSA for basketball because for MVP, sales and marketing is still the main goal in promoting FIBA basketball here in the country that is why he cannot replace those incompetent.

For now forget grassroot and player’s development for future endeavor, those stakeholders are not enthusiastic about it.

People has been saying that here for years. The results of the 2019 WC and 2021 SEA Games has opened many Filipinos to what's wrong with SBP. Many have been consistently clamoring in SocMed but they haven't budged. They even got JC play for a few games to appease and make pinoys forget about it. Hell they haven't even done anything after the recent EASL drubbing.

Let's finish the tournament first before all of you concluded and rant all you want if failed to win Gold medal... This is preliminary round and they still have shot in semifinals, 3 wins away for Gold... All of you become toxic here... They badly needed all of support that they needed now...
