2023 SEA Games (Cambodia)

Someone commented on FB that we were able to beat Team "USA" in the Jones Cup before. So the 5/6 imports should not be an excuse today.

If my memory serves me right, the 2007 PH team also defeated an all-PBA import team in an exhibition game where Menk scored the game-winning basket. The key factor was team chemistry, which the 2007 team and the 2012 Jones Cup team certainly possessed, but is lacking in this current roster.

No chemistry because of the hugot system which Tab hates. Tab puts premium on chemistry and preparation.

Quinito twitted that they knew about the passport-only rule since last year. Hahaha. SBP has nobody else to blame but themselves.

I beg to disagree. We actually have a ton of plays and it's confusing the players. We have iso, dribble drive, drive dribble, isolation, dribble-dribble-dribble drive, my turn-your turn, fancy-dribble-then-turnover, and multiple variations of the bullet play: BALA ka na jan, BALA na si Batman, bala na si Palos, bala na si Macoy. prove me wrong.

I concede. We truly had multiple ways of turning the ball over and forcing shots with bad spacing.

Pangilinan ain't happy: https://twitter.com/iamMVP/status/1656646520656232448?t=5fWMrsxc17xO2WkEiRg3rQ&s=19

Here's what he said: "What a disgraceful game for Gilas. An ignominious defeat which will be etched deeply in infamy. SBP - what happened?"

I think the game still could have gone either way, but I approve of him calling out SBP, if that is his real account. Those guys are the ones who are to blame, far more than Chot.

MVP is blind....most of us already knows that its Chot and Panlileo.....they are mismanaging Gilas.....everyone knows that fans disagree on having Chot as a coach because he just doesn't have the capability of becoming a good coach and forming a competitive team......now we can flush the world cup down the toilet and just credit it as a learning experience that we should never hire a soso coach.

Man, at least the Filipinas (the women's football team) have something to look forward to. They have a clear direction and a clear identity. They got 6 points out of 9 and lost out only because they couldn't score. But they continued their defensive track record of not conceding much. Plus, they at least have clear methods. Defensive team, good counterattacks, and good at free kicks and corners.

Contrast to this Gilas team. Good players, but management holding them back, development-wise and direction-wise. Jeez.

Having a competent coach helps.

The answer is right in front of MVP: Panlilio

He has screwed up big time by appointing Chot Reyes and his incompetent son as head coaches. These clowns need to go. Now.

the best matchup for Cambodia is actually the Team of Mighty Sports with Blatche, Balkman, Malonzo, Gray, mickey etc

Just started watching the game a while ago on One Sports. I like that Lopez's guy game. He's like our very own Iskati out there, but only bigger, more athletic, and arguably faster on loose balls. State-side na state-side ang galawan. Do we have someone of his caliber at the moment?

Like I mentioned before the game, this guy was nicknamed "The Lion" back in High School. Was going toe to toe against current nba players.

Hopefully, this opens the eyes of casual fans about the "different levels" in basketball. You can't expect our team to do what they did against Malaysia when this Cambodian team is more athletic and stronger. That's the problem with our "physical" defense, it gets exposed when the other team is bigger, stronger and faster. Also our subpar shooting cannot spread the floor against athletic defenders.

We need to keep playing against this level of opponents (especially our youngsters) so we figure out how to beat these type of teams "over time." Thinking there is a shortcut process to success is insanity (keeps doing the same thing expecting a different result).

So a better prepared ragtag team of ineligibles beat an unprepared ragtag team of ineligibles. Who knew practice and familiarity makes a big difference?

Just like CTab offense drying up in DR and Jordan games. When we do not have the speed and athletic advantage. No amount of swinging the ball will make us have a mismatch. Unlike teams of Serbia, Argentina, Croatia, were are speed and quick attacks are effective.

Team USA always had superior advantage on speed and athleticism against European/Americas teams, but several of those teams found a way to win. The teams that did it had the advantage on "cohesion" they were all national teams that have been playing together since they were young.

The winning formula has been public knowledge for more than a decade. I guess we didn't get the memo.

The things is Chot, SBP and PBA dumped WC preparation and development down the drain by getting all good ineligible bigs that they can get so they could win the SEAG gold by hook or by crook. And yet they didnt even get the best available ineligible players. Is Ross really better than Bollick? Why not just get Mikey?

Again why is there a rule that PBA player who are in the pool should have guaranteed slots? At this point I would have used gimpy Gray over old Marcio or bad defending Arvin.

This team looks like it pandered to SMC instead of getting the best available players out there.

actually that's Pontius Pilate washing his hands publicly

I wished for a surprise and I got it. The kid is just what, 21 or 22 (didn't even have the standard basketball "stud" look) but he made easy work of some of our best guys. And I don't believe he's in the radar of NBA teams, or maybe i'm not researching enough. What more those more heralded US kids.
Despite some breakthroughs in the past years, Philippine basketball system still has a loooot to work on, that is for sure.

It's his athleticism. Compared to nba-level guys, his skills are not up to par. But his athleticism and motor is something our level is not used to.

He's around the same age as Chris Koon, and they're from the same area so they played against each other.

Now everyone's on the Choke train after myself screaming about it the past 5 years. Better late than never huh boys?

MVP should be kneeling at Tab's doorstep on bended knee if he wants the Gilas Program to be successful, and this time finally kick the Choke, Joke, and the old dunderheads at SBP for new blood. Cone can still be there, Uichico can still be there, but please no more Choke and Joke. He may even bring in Pat Aquino if he wishes, I can't believe that Gilas women is easier to look at than the Gilas men basketball-wise. I spent the entire 1st qtr grumbling inside at CJ Perez to run some mfffing plays.

Look at Cambodia:

Hoeup (6'1) - 3/0/1
Dorsey (6'2) - 22/4/7 with 2 steals
Lopes (6'4) - 13/10/5
Pridgett (6'5) - 17/7/3
Peterson (6'8) - 11/9/1
Morgan (6'8) -2/6/0
Henderson (6'9) - 11/9/0 with 2 blocks

Forget passports, this is what a normal basketball team looks like. They got a wing who can bring down the ball, a 6'2 PG who can shoot, a 6'9 big who can shoot pala, even their two bench players stuck to their roles. They might have intentionally sucked against Singapore to make Chot have a false sense of belief.

It's not the 1st time this has happened, I've said it continually the Philippines has a false sense of how good they really are ( the level isn't really high). .
the preperation Gilas had relative the importance of thr tournament (juat SEAG ) and compared to what top elite teams have ( preperation of 2 days for windows) is actually more in abundance.
Where we are actually behind of course relative to just mid tier or top asain teams is really talent level. Picture for a moment how the Philippines would do in just Asia without a NP (like Blatche etc) .

Fans complained how this SEAG tesm was assembled when in reality if your consder they had 5 NP (FIBA ineligible) the talent level for Gilas was actually very good ( may even be better thsn a fully FIBA eligible Gilas line up, definitely without a NP).

It's not just the current HC we should be barking at , but we seriously have to change the overall level of how we develop players (Mababa for even top in the region much more world level

the question is why majority players in Philippine pool did not turn -up resulting manpower shortage in early days of practices. It could be many of them doesn’t to be associated with a unpopular coach that even home crowd booed him in previous games? I don’t think the semis or finals are reason. To think after finals, still attendances on practice sessions did not change much.
