Mike Philipps seems has decent perimeter defense.
When you evaluate upside potential, it's these very things like lateralls that you look for, i know i sound so repetitive hyping Mike, but we really have an untapped with excellent upside literally playing in our local gym, waiting for the SBP to use.
i don't think anyone will question mike's defensive upside. however tho, what do you think about his offensive upside? i don't think there's much left to be tapped into tho. still an excellent choice for gilas of course.
Mike literally has very little basketball years of professional focus development , if you look at his dribbling he only dribbles with his right .. i really think given enough repetition he can improve. I'm not expecting him to be Larry bird or magic johnson handles Lol, but certainly there is room for improvment with reps..
just thinking of what is realistic archetype for Mike ,,, hmm, maybe a dreymond green type, i noticed his vision is actually not bad... with more reps , he will be able to read the game better

I look at Mike Philipps as a big man version of a Gabe Norwood. As we saw Norwood in Gilas, he was there as a defensive wing specialist. But his offense had always been a question mark, he didn't have a decent 3-pt. shooting for a wing & he was just too passive in offense (he was not even among the best fastbreak finishers of Gilas). But becoz of Norwood's exceptional defensive skills, he had been very serviceable for Gilas. The thing is, Philippine basketball didn't have anyone who can replicate Norwood's role as a good size wing defender during the late 2000's to the late 2010's era, which made Norwood's value to the national team even greater. I say, Norwood was more valuable than a Jeff Chan, a Japeth Aguilar or even a Junmar Fajardo during the 2013 to 2019 period.
The same might be the case of Mike Philipps. Offense wise, Philipps may never come close to the likes of a Carl Tamayo, Justin Baltazar, Jamie Malonzo or a Mason Amos, but becoz of Philipps' exceptional defensive skills & rebounding prowess, he may be as valuable or even more valuable than any of these players mentioned as far as Gilas is concerned.
Mike P can be a Rodman type of player because of his motor, length and athleticism.
He will be lethal in the pba setting because he can be a Rodman type of player in that league and be effective.
In the Gilas setting though, he would need to have shooting. Shooting is easier to work on (as long as the form is not broken) compared to trying to learn advanced ball-handling when someone is already old. If he develops a consistent shot, he can be our Rodman-lite but with a jumper. Rodman is known for rebounding and defense but was also a really good passer.
60-54 win by FEU over ADMU
ADMU played w/o padrigao, mason amos, koon
in fairness to Gabe, i recall him being a much better shooter whenever he donned the Gilas jersey. Then of course his shooting would regress back once in the PBA. lol
Looking at RealGM, Gabe shoots at 26% and a little bet lower than his PBA stats in 3pts. But he is a low volume not even 1 attempt a game shooter so he will not be consider a reliable shooter in FIBA or PBA.

good win by FEU atleast they played without Gonzales, Alforque, Bautista and Tempra. Good thing is they can a afford to play a bigger backcourt for some stretches, Sleat and Cholo doing PG role plus his shooting improving in the recent games. 6'4" wing baby tam Luke Felipe is usual to his shooting, Pasaol playing like a veteran. Renzo Competente is arriving this month i think. I think they have a shot atleast the last 4 spot in the UAAP F4. former ateneo/csb assistant coach gabby severino is now with FEU coaching group.
