I guess the best we can do is play positionless basketball so small guys are not trained for big positions just by default.

Are we really still into height obsession? I thought all of us are praising and glorifying Japan? Dba maliit din sila? but they are well trained and skilled.. that is the most important thing..
china is china.. they are always focused on height no matter what..

if you see the other line-ups hindi naman nagkalayo heights.. china lang talaga is being china..

skill and talent above all!

Yes. Reality is on average we’re a short people. You can’t reasonably expect every batch to have tall prospects. This is why we need to maximize the exposure to modern ball for the few 6’7 and up kids we get.

Best we can do is train every 6'6" and under player to play the perimeter, and every 6'4" and under player to play both guard positions, instead of having 6'1"-6'4" players play exclusively as wings without learning PG skills.

Again, who are the tall guys who are available and at the National team's disposal? Not trying to defend Coach, but merely pointing out that this is the best available talent.

I'm not going to put Andewil Yap, Deydi De Ocampo or even Owen Calanasan because these tall guys are raw! Also, the other taller players pulled out because of various reasons: money, logistics, school adjustment.

I get it that it's frustrating that it looks like we can't form a competitive national team, but it is what it is. It's as if we can magically produce a team of 6'4 and up players like Lithuania 16U. It's not in our (asian) genes and oftentimes nutrition, or rather the lack of it, plays a role in the (deficient) height of our players.

I attended from day 1 of the tryouts. Wala talagang malalaki in this age group.

Sir,
That is why the National Federation of the sports should establish a genuine grassroots program to cover all those you’ve mentioned, now that the FIBA World Cup 2023 are officially over it’s high time to pour out the big chunk of the budget to those kids in preparation for the next cycle.

We need vision from our leaders.

Look at Yuto Kawashima's performance in the U16. He was amazing and dominant. Casual observers will only notice that performance and think he's innately good. But the thing that made him dominate that age group is...the previous year he was already playing in their World Cup U19 team against world-level players 3 years older than him. He only averaged 10 minutes and 2 pts in that tournament but the fruit came in the U16s.

"One step backward, two steps forward."

Again, with what budget? Some players had to pull out because they could not afford the daily angkas commute from their school to the practice/try out venue. Kung wala ang tatay ni Irus Chua, malamang walang packed dinner ang players and coaching staff at uuwi sila ng gutom at 1030pm.

So are you saying since a big chunk of SBP budget goes to the FIBA World Cup, the U16 Boys are the collateral damage. I hope the next SBP officials should also give priority with our grassroot program. I will not be surprised if there will be only handful of Boys will join the next tournaments.

this are the times when you need a Romero in the roster. Mikee could have bankrolled the team

We all know that the oligarch are the one who are shouldering majority of the expenses of the Federation, as for the other stakeholders, partners and sponsors I had no idea about their percentage of contributions. That is why it is very alarming on all of us IBNers this posted message of yours because it seems that it’s like a “KKB thing” as far as expenses on our youth team. I dunno know the full details of the by-laws of the SBP but as far as I know, budget about national bound players are shouldered by the NSA and the PSC/POC must also pitch in as well because were talking about Philippine representation here at the International level.

If I'm SBP I will let Delta Pineda takeover the U16 and U18 because he has a lot money to spend....if you watch the MPBL JUNIORS his team dominating the league and he develop good and tall players.... if you watch his under 14 team you will see a tall and good players. One player on his under 14 team name Guinto his about 6'3 to 6'4

Our basketball overlords dont have their priorities in order. If they did they'd actually prioritize our youth but we all know where they actually put their money.

I feel like the 2022 U18 was the most balanced team we had so far, in terms of height, Even if nobody was above 6'9. that team has four 6'7 and above players that can play multiple positions up front and in the perimeter ( Seven, Kobe D, Pablo, Amos). and it has two 6'4 guards in Gamber and Coronel, plus a 6'5 SF in Andres.

Too bad SBP and Josh dont have the foresight to insert U-16ers 6'6 Calleum, 6'7 Konov, 6'5 Bayla and 6'2 Compenente in the lineup, only 5'9 Bahay made it. This possible additions, coupled with better coaching, could have made the team finish better than 6th out of 8 countries. Maybe even a podium finish

Id guess those guys needed to play some AAU so they couldn't play both u16 and u18.

Japan U-16 seems like same height as PHL U-16. But tallest bro is only 14 y.o.

Another sayang. SBP coulda shoulda capped JJ Mandaquit last year and inserted him in U-16 even if he's like only 15 y.o. (last year's batch was actually 17 and youn er because of the pandemic) . USA Basketball capped him this year

Iba balak natin kay Mandaquit we will get his passport before 16 we will expose him thru nbtc..we will try to develop him via us u16 lets see if the experiment(gamble I say) will be worth it..

Sir Dotch/Reamily, there is still a window of opportunity for both 16 yr. old JJ kid and 17 yr. old Dylan Harper to play for Gilas and getting exempted despite playing in a sanctioned tournament like FIBA Americup U16 for JJ and FIBA World U19 for Dylan, assuming both the National Federation agreed before the Sec Gen stamp his/her mark of approval and possible Administrative Fee may impose. Reference: FIBA Internal Regulation Book 3(rev. 26 Mar. 2022) Players with Two or More Nationalities with Previous Registrations, Article 19 a,b i, ii, iii; Article 20.c-d; 21-23; Article 74.e

Because Double J already obtained his PH Passport before his 16[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday he had the option to play Batang Gilas U16 if ever they secure a ticket for next year’s World U17 at Turkey from June 29 to July 7, 2024. But it’s very unlikely for now because he is one of the major cogs why Team USA for claimed the Americup U16 and the only remaining option is to play for the senior team before he reach the age of 23 otherwise he will be forever tag as naturalized if ever he change allegiance. As per previous online interview(youtube platform) he confirmed that he is willing to don the national team in the future but he doesn’t know all the details and intricacies of the FIBA ruling for changing allegiance at the young age.

Same thing with Dylan, if only someone from our National Federation are seriously enough to pursue and assist the kid to obtain a PH Passport this early it will not be a major issue according to his Filipina Mother Coach Maria Pizarro a former Div. 1 player from New Orleans Univ and Ron Sr., in fact, during one of the online interview the mother being an advocate of womens basketball was asked if ever theirs an offer to coach a girls team she will not hesitate to pack her things and aboard the very first available flight to come home. That’s another sweetener for both the Harper boys if ever it happens.

Yes Sir, I think the negotiation should start ASAP while those two kids are still in their daisy years and the purpose is for them to be included in the pool for the 2027 up to 2031 FIBA World Cup cycle. I hope we could also entice the 6'4 Vyc Miller a 4 Star recruit for the said pool as well, considering basketball USA hasn't invited the kid on any of the sanctioned tournament.
