Fire Joke and Choke, that's all I'm going to say.

But what can we do, malakas ang kapit sa itaas eh. They're basically living off reputation from 2013 when Gilas finally shed their demons vs Korea at home. Chot is basically our own version of the NBA's Doc Rivers or the NFL's Mike McCarthy, perhaps even worse.

Ouch.

Are they our designated shooters? They shot well for the number of shots they took.

Is he always this bad at shooting 3s? Or is it due to him transitioning from a big into a wing?

Yes. Obviously Competente and Konov are the designated shooters.

Expected higher % from Konov tbh. Maybe I expected too much.

Competente's Shooting is better than % says. He have like 3-4 Very long 2s that went in. (A little step back, it is a 3)

Caelum is not known for his outside shooting. He is more of a slasher using his athleticism

I noticed that too, Competente has some baskets where he adjusted his foot to go inside the 3 pt line. Maybe from muscle memory if they had a shorter 3 point line in his games in the US?

Caelum has a lot of growing up BBIQ wise. The dunks were good. But later Oz already adjusted. I agree he gets lost in defense. Sometimes he forgets he is already a perimeter player and camps in the paint. Good potential. But he has to realize the dunks won't be there in the higher age group.

Adding the standouts from this U16 to the last U16 and U18s we had and we can already form a solid core.
Something like

PG - Panopio, Bahay
SG - Competente
G/F -Ildefonso, Bayla, Spencer
F - Harris, Konov,
PF - Tamayo, Mahmood, Porter
PF/C - Sotto, Edu

Average height is 6'5 which is really impressive even compared to our senior teams.

Any standouts I missed?

His body is already pretty developed for his age and I think that’s why he dominates his age group but he’s a cone on the perimeter and I think he has a low motor. He’s better off being the Center on defense and it was pretty effective in the first half

What is everyone's thoughts on Mahmood and Romero?

YT comments seem to hype the latter a lot as "EZ Mil Romero", jokingly or otherwise.

Mahmood and Harris seem to be our only bigs kasi hindi pa nasusundan si Kai, although BG seems to be trying to convert Harris into a wing.

Balik uli ang Batang Gilas sa small ball era, yung mga panahon na wala pa tayong malaki tulad ni Kai.

that poster dunk though sheesh...But I hope he develops more than just being a human higlight reel. If he can just be Kawhi like, that's a win

sayang yung India. they almost upset Japan too. the only problem is that they only relied on 3 guys for 90% of the scoring and that Kawashima bullied them inside

Perhaps the Batang Gilas loss to Japan wasn't so bad after all. Baka nga natalo pa tayo sa India kung naipanalo natin yung Japan.

Man, I am very envious of our East Asian neighbors. Nowadays Japan can just churn out D1 or D2 level prospects like it's nothing, and now Kawashima seems to be next great Japanese player after maybe Hachimura. Tayo? Si Kai lang yung homegrown, yung iba laking stateside kadalasan.

Geo Chiu.

I think he handled himslef pretty nicely as the lone big in the game vs Raguna and the other Korean bigs. Yeah, he has outplayed most of the game, but IMO, the kid was alright and wasn't truly that dominated.

how's raven cortez doing these days? pre-injury he was batang gilas' best defender. he was legit 6'7" at 16 yrs old so he could've grown a bit since then. hope he didn't regress like carino. i always thought tamayo & cortez are gonna be our modern-day & taller versions of RDO & pingris.

Caelum looks like a taxpayer already.

don't worry they just finished building The National Academy Of Sports in New Clark City and they plan to discover good athletes and train them there including basketball... who knows maybe they can produce good players there

Batang Gilas U16 3pt Shooting% So Far
(Total All Games Played) (After Quarter Finals)

GOOD

Kristian Porter - 4/6 (66.7%)
Jared Bahay - 5/9 (55.6%)
Lorenzo Competente - 7/15 (46.7%)
-----------------
DECENT

Zain Mahmood - 1/3 (33.3%)
Jayden Jones - 1/3 (33.3%)
Alex Konov - 6/19 (31.6%)
-------------------
BAD

Jacob Bayla - 2/8 (25%)
Andy Gemao - 1/9 (11.1%)
Caelum Harris - 1/9 (11.1%)
Lebron Nieto - 1/19 (5.3%)
Basti Reyes - 0/4 (0%)
Mikhail Romero - 0/2 (0%)

damn. he had the most attempts in the team and only made 1? i have no idea why he has the license to shoot. 13% overall FG and 5% 3fg%.

why.......

Been years since i drop a comment in IBN. Just want to say Jacob Bayla should consider going to NBA Global Academy. Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels and now Tyrese Proctor.. come on if he works hard , Jacob could have the same skill set of those Big PGs!

to be fair with konov, he started the tournament shooting very poorly. 1/10 3FG during his first two games against Kuwait and Japan. Against Kaz and Aus, he shot a much better 5/9.

he's also 8/9 fts. FTs, supposedly, are good indicators whether a player can be a good 3pt shooter.

i think we can still pencil him to be a good, tall shooter.

Thats a bad sign. Thats like Kobe dominating in HS because he already had a mans body and his peers were still developing. He actually stopped developing his skills. Thought he was good enough. Up to now I dont think he is adding wrinkles to his game.
