I say the slashing/penetrating guards & wings of the Dominican Republic are bigger/taller & more athletic. Victor Liz for instance is a legit 6-foot-4 athletic shooting guard. Point guard Michael Cuevas is 6-foot-2, while Gelvis Solano is 6-1.

Castro is what, 5-foot-10? Tenerio is what, 5-foot-8?

Gemao isn’t good right now but at least he hasn’t size and athleticism and I think there is some potential there as a guard.

Other countries have good forwards and bigs I think because the offense runs through them mostly since they have the luxury it as a result naturalize guards because they don’t produce good ones. The Philippines is the opposite because the offense runs through the guards so they become the creators but stunts the development of versatile bigs\forwards.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence the Philippines keeps producing undersized guards.

Japan's U-16 bigs are good offensive rebounders and many times Mahmood was outrebounded by Japan's bigs..

Maybe in the half but we almost equialized the board at the end of the game JP OR/DR 14/34, PH OR/DR 13/34. Kawashima is skilled. The others not so much. It was not the rebounds that killed us. It was the lack of a good play in the end.

Theres a limitation to how effective your speedy undersized guard is unless he is as explosive and strong as Castro. Bahay is good but he is no Castro. Bad news is there is no Castro clone on the horizon.

In future iterations of the U16, defense should be an emphasis. Focus din on finding tall, long, and versatile players, at least similar to Caelum and Konov, and train them to defend and use their length. Timely rotations and staying in front. That way, we can keep in step, even if we don't have much talent.

As for offensive system, anything's OK, as long as it helps develop the players' skills.

When I first came into IBN, I think I had a philosophy that every kid should be a guard, no matter how tall, no matter what position on the court. Might have tweaked it along the way. No system, just a philosophy. If you're a guard, then you're allowed to handle the ball, and have the freedom to create off the dribble. Everybody must have the freedom to play from the perimeter.

Here, we just pigeonhole players into positions according to height, and just stick them there. Plus, like you said, only the guards are the creators. Man. We need an offense that allows everybody to create.

To be fair I think the system going on now has everybody trying to create for themselves just not likely to lead to wins. I mean I saw Kovlov getting a chance on the perimeter, Harris got the ball a lot in the second half, Bayla had the chance. Reality though is the team isn’t that level of talented to dominate. Harris when he was aggressive in the second half dominated but the other guys aren’t on his level.

Kaya the DDO could use some tweaks. The Reyes DDO is too iso-heavy. If the guys aren't on that level of talent, we could consider passing it around a bit instead of trying to create off the dribble for over half the shot clock. It will open up shooters or cutters.

Additionally, again, these boys could benefit from defensive training, and a good defensive system. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Just wondering no one posted about NZ u16 is it because they got beaten by Korea?

I like Konov's potential , he reminds me of when Ken Tuffin was 17 yrs old , wala pa talaga, but the mobility , fluidity length , reflexes is there. his stroke is there naman

Honestly, this group isn't really particulary that good. However, we have very good tall wing prospects in in Caelum, Konov, and Bayla. I think what this group lacks is a go to guy and Bahay isn't good enough to be that guy.

Watched like most of the game . Problem was that the kids were rushing everything they didnt look composed. The pandemic did them in . Open shots were rushed i bet they werent used to this stage

Nobody is good enough to drive all the way to the basket. Bahay does but because he is too small he is not a consistent threat inside and he has few passing angles.

Even Caelum is not good enough to drive all the way in a half court. That tells you to give up the drive and kick scheme. What they did was screen for Caelum to get a perimeter shot. And it worked. Everybody trying to 1 on 1 it was an eyesore.

Lol, Mikee Reyes insinuates in his podcast that the team played "larong mayaman" style against japan particularly the Fil-ams. Is this true? Never watched the game since I know that we'll lose because of the coach!

Nope they didnt. They tried their best. He is just afraid to knock the coach. The filfors played the most minutes, led by Mahmood. But rebounding was a team effort. Mahmoud is a bit earth bound and not so tall. I just expect him to box out his man and let the guards and other forwards get the board.

Another Reyes how fitting? lol but he lost all credibilty (at least for me) when he mentioned to move
on from Tab etc

I really hope we could developed big lead guard (6-3 and up) in the age group. And also, we should probably move on developing midget guards, not unless they are jason castro-type of player.

Koon at 6'4-6'5 seems to have potential. Eligibility issues thru d Slaughter-route
And surprisingly si Stockton of Converge (6'2) but has PG skills inexperience lng

Mikee Reyes is, sad to say, also beholden to some people. He may present himself as unfilitered for the people but just like Jalen and Jacoby, they do have some names they will never go against.

As I said to my previous post that game against the young Akatsukis will be the acid test for Dayun-ur hence it will be our gauge on our performance for this tournament moving forward. It’s very much obvious the quality of the game it’s like night and day despite that 6 point win of Japan. I totally agree that they really abused us inside(off. rebound) because they had length but what is very striking to me is the ball movement, they know how to position themselves properly without to much fanciness and that’s part of the so-called basketball tactics on the part of the coaching staff, now as for our kids I pity them because it really shows that they are not that happy and comfortable with the system hence they were totally exposed big-time both offensively and defensively
