I wonder if this 2022 Team can Outperform 2018 team.

The 2018 team placed 4th, and earned the right to play in U17 that time.

That 2018 team have size with Kai, Cortez, and Chiu. Kai was a monster there having 20-20 games in QF and SF. And he was named in Mythical 5.

Now, this 2022 team, Have taller players in Guards and Wings. (If they choose the taller ones), So, I bet they can outperform the likes of Padrigao, Fortea, and Abadiano. They have no dominant Big like Kai. But I am hoping for Mahmood and Konov to be a revelation here.

Small ball is sacrificing size for speed and vesatility at the 4 and 5 positions. It doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing size at the 1, 2, and 3 positions, which ja.he and sajubeads was pointing out. They showed concern over the undersized players at 1 and 2, which will affect our ability to defend.

This is u16 youth league, there are no 6'3 to 6'7 manchildren that will play pg for any national team and certainly no one w extensive intl experience. Our current team has decent size and more importantly, the athletic ability to play and guard multiple positions as well as run. Id rather have that than 8 stiffs like gian chiu playing at this level.

Some people have a tough time understanding that tall people tend to develop their games slower than the shorter ones hence most of filipino players at this age, its the shorter kids that have more advanced games and skills.

I myself am content with the size of the frontline from 3, 4, and 5, so long as the 3 isn't 6'3" or below. As long as they show versatility and talent, the lineup can manage.

do they really have the more advanced skills? or is it because the taller prospects do not have much opportunities the shorter players are getting?

I know what you are getting at but what can we do? its both a resources and cultural matter. For obvious reasons we lack the infra, coaching etc to make it happen. Second, here if youre a big and you play perimeter more than bang in the post, they get labeled as soft.

I see how the campazzos mills and barea still flourish in the intl game is not much about the size, but more about being familiar with the playing style and physicality. That is the part our locas should get used to the most.

well, the writer of Hardcourt (PBA Annual) disparaged RDO, YDO and Mick Pennisi for playing in the perimeter despite their height and the fact they are bigmen.

i don't know but the mentality of Filipinos in playing basketball is dragging the country down in terms of development.

I agree, we are very immature in terms of keeping up with how the game has evolved. But going back to regular programming, i hope we can see through the devt of this current crop of batang gilas where they can grow in the game together. I have high hopes.

wow, they're still publishing those? last time i bought the PBA annual was way back early 2000s.

I hope that our mentality in terms of bigmen will change after a generation, especially that kids today are exposed to modern bigs in the NBA like Embiid, Jokic KAT, KP. Too bad, our coaches would still emphasize on the traditional post/back to the basket set up as its a easy win especially with the dearth of bigmen and the emphasize of coaches/managers on job security

well, it was mentioned in Hardcourt 2004-05 edition. BTW, I only owned two editions of it (2001 and 2004/05).

sabagay 04-05 paradigm is still the dominant big man set up, locally we had Taulava while Shaq, and Yao were the the top centers. back in the 90s my dad gave me his 94-98 editions of hardcourt, while i started buying those in 99', sad that only the 96, 98 and 04 are available online through shopee (still looking for later editions)

If only we got with the times in the 2010s and embraced versatility in our tall players, similar to Miami and GSW (although they did take advantage of the weakest batch of centers in the NBA), and patterned our development after their play style.

just like in any aspect (technology, arts, entertainment etc), we are always a decade behind, i just hope that the next generation of coaches will embrace position-less, basketball especially that the current and probably the future generation already have the manpower to do so, im just happy that our average height is going up through the year

these are the teams Gilas is going to face in tournament. do you think that Bahay (5'10) and Gemao (6'0) will make the cut against Australia and NZ parading 6'2-6'5 guards?

I mean they have 5'11 - 6'1 guards too.

Imo, I will choose Gemao and Bayla still if they are the most skilled PG right now in Batang Gilas. But I will alternate them in PG. I wouldnt use them at the same time in the floor.

We have Bayla (6'4ish) and Jones (6'3ish) for SG.

Mandatory 2 year ROTC will solve all these ills.

Anyhow. PHL cant produce 16 y/o/ 6'5's that play guard. so we have no choice but to kill them with speed and skills. problem is Aussie guards are just as skillful and fast, and they are a head taller.

actually, we have 6'2-6'4 that are natural guards in that roster. it's just that the coaching staff are forcing these players to play bigger positions to accommodate the midgets.

No choice really. in that age group 5'8-6'1 boys are the most skillful. And Pinoy coaches tend to put their best players regardless of size on the floor at any given time. This is the same reason the Nieto twins, Desiderio and other small players were able to beat the taller Chinese, (was that?) 9 years ago.

That's why I am more confident playing against 16 y.o. Chinese 6'5s who are forced to play guards because of this "taller is better" mindset. They maybe be taller but definitely they are not in anyway more instinctive and dont have better BBIQ than our 5'8 boys.

^^ that same team got mopped when they advanced to the Worlds tho. So yeah, cant just rely on skills.
