2018 World Championship with 32 teams?

It will probably happen. More games means more money, they don't care that we have too many blow out games as it is... Expanding the Olympic tournament makes more sense.

We just need more blow outs at WC like we don"t have them enough already:rolleyes:

I'm all for the expansion to 32 but I do wonder, will there be a 3rd Oceanian team?

Why?

Host - 1 spot
OC - 1 spot
Africa - 5 spots
Asia - 5 spots
Americas - 6 spots
Oceania - 2 spots
Europe - 10 spots
Wildcards () - 2 spots

What a bad idea...seriously...

* Qualifying will be boring.
* Yeah, we really wanna see Kazakhstan vs Venezuela in 2018.
* Lower nations are prone to playing more physically aggressive and injuring our players.

Just to add my two cents, my question is how a 32-team tournament would be organized. Currently it's four groups of six teams, but that would have to change. They could stay with four groups, but the prelims would take several days longer. Or they could split the group into eight groups of four, and then make up for the reduced number of group games by adding an extra round to the elimination phase. The second option seems more likely, as it's a) shorter and b) how the FIFA World Cup does things (isn't FIBA thinking of changing the World Championships name to the FIBA World Cup?).

I would prefer two group stages, but instead of the normal pool system I would run the groups on a double-elimination format. So in the first round you would have 8 groups of 4 and it would go like this:

G1: #1 seed vs. #4 seed
G2: #2 seed vs. #3 seed

G3: Winner vs. Winner (winner advances to next stage as group winner)
G4: Loser vs. Loser (loser eliminated)

G5: Loser G3 vs. Winner G4 (winner advances to next stage, loser eliminated)

Second round would have 4 groups of 4 (two group winners from the first stage and two second-place) and go the same way, with the opening matchups pairing the group winners against the second-place teams.

After the second round there would be 8 teams remaining and then it would proceed on a knockout system as usual.

Advantages of this system are that every game would be meaningful, and coasting or throwing games would be discouraged since a loss means you can be eliminated the next day. Group winners would get the additional advantage of an extra day of rest.

No chance of that happening, of course.

I said it back on page one, and I'm even more sure now.

There's too big a talent gap right now. 24 teams is a good cap for the immediate future. Talk to me again 4 years from now and maybe that will change.

You wanna win some money on this, not that crap. The actual format is really good, but i like the one from 2002.

what the hell is that even supposed to mean? Venezuela is way better than a some of the countries participating this year and could easily give some trouble to some of the European teams

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean but the 2002 (and 1998, 1994) format was terrible.

lol no

Ahahahahaha...so in the process of selecting a random underdog team I've managed to choose a user's team. Fluke?

Hey Lewis, seriously who wants to see Venezuela vs Kazakhstan? :D

GoooooOOOOO Kazaks!

So "EUROPE" is the real world for you ;)
what an Egocentric snob your ARE

I'm really getting sick of some of you Europeans with all your Superiority complex

EUROPE IS NOT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD, you know

Strange words from someone who lives in a country where they call the NBA winners as "WORLD CHAMPIONS"

32 will be great

32 will be great

I think 32 is pretty good. It'll actually motivate more teams to try and make it since it'll be easier to get in... we will see more interest and it'll help basketball develpment worldwide

10 European
6 American
4 Asian
4 African
2 Oceania
2 Host/Olympic Gold

4 remaining spots can be a world qualifier with 8 teams in 2 groups of 4... with the top 2 in each group advancing...

It'll be nice because maybe we will be seeing teams like Uruguay, Panama, Mexico and Dominican Rep at the worlds... Hungary, Latvia, Israel, Finland, Macedonia from Europe... Kazakhstan? from Asia... Mali and Egypt from Africa.. it'll be nice for basketball worldwide... it'll help it grow.. count me among those who want it to happen...

8 groups of 4 is best...

with the top 3 of each group advancing and joing the next group in a 6 team pool...

Group A and B
C and D
E and F
G and H

the 4 teams in the final would have played 12 games by the time they finish the tourney,,,

Absolutely bad idea. We already do not have 24 quality teams in WC, add 8 more mediocre to crappy teams? WHY??????????

Who's to say that these 8 teams will still be mediocre by 2014 (2018)? It's clear that basketball has been improving every year. The real problem is that there's no continuity with NT which causes a lot of bad play. In order for WC to be competitive, players must be dedicated to their teams. 2010 WC proved that there's no dedication with NT.
