Congrats to Slovenia, looked like they might choke it away in the first half but they dominated the third quarter.

Important note for tomorrow, if France beats Turkey only the top 6 get automatic bids.

For example if France and Russia win, and Croatia beat Turkey for 7th, Croatia still wouldn't get an automatic bid.

Europe gets 3 spots and the Americas gets 1, the last team that did not make it. So Dominican Republic is in. Then it will be 3 teams out of Croatia, France, Germany, Lithuania, Russia. Looking at it fairly, Germany and Lithuania do not deserve a spot.

Actually I have thought this for a long time about Lithuania. They view the World Championship the same way as the USA - they don't rate it at all. Both USA and Lithuania have always basically taken it off and saved their teams up for the Olympics to be fresher. Seeing how they never take it seriously and again this time did not either they should not get a place.

Germany should not get a place just because "Dirk and Kaman will play". Because they were awful to be honest about it at EuroBasket 2007 and the 2008 Olympics and in this tournament they brought a B squad and even though they gave it all they had, they had no chance to qualify. So to me neither Germany nor Lithuania took it seriously and so they don't deserve the spot.

And really, you know that Dirk, Saras, and so forth don't even want to play next summer anyway.

1994: didn't play because couldn't qualify for EC'93
1998: as in EC'97, Lithuania was 6th among European countries, just like year before that
2002: didn't play because couldn't qualify through EC'93
2006: Saras didn't play already in EC'05, Lithuania was 5th among European countries, just like year before that

In other words we take it seriously, unless you suggest that Lithuania doesn't take every second EC seriously

LuDux stop your nonsense propaganda. Everyone knows Lithuania doesn't take basketball in general too seriously. Lithuania should play in Division B.

Was wondering where Basketball Player went...

1. Russia made the next round.
2. Top7 teams will get direct qualification, not 6
3. Russia will have to win 1 out of 3 games in next phase to get the ticket, not two
4. Russia winning 1/3 games= 33% chances. Russia losing all 3 games=12.5%
Therefore Russia has almost three time the chances to qualifying that not qualifying.
5. Basically You said that Russia is a lock for a wildcard, writing off their chances to qualify.

Arkadios,how are the odds today?:D

Now Russia needs a wild-card,right?

i think the wildcards will be:Lithuania,Russia,Dominican Republic and Germany(maybe Lebanon)

Great work .. really informative .. and thanks a lot for sharing ..

Šaras is going to play if he's healthy. I'm sure Kaukėnas will play as well. I wouldn't write down Macijauskas as well, who knows. If that will happen, I see a similar favorites as in Olympics 2008:

USA, Spain, Argentina (will the best players play?), Lithuania

nah, the wild cards will totally be for Cambodia, zimbabwe and Mexico
Wasn't Mexico one of the final dozen candidates for the wild card? Can't remember.

Also I readily recognize #1, #3, and #4 in your signature. Is #2 supposed to be Chinese too? Doesn't ring a bell.

yeah those are all Chinese proverbs

the second one means: Gather your rosebuds while you can.
but literally it means: "Pick the flower when it is ready to be picked."

this is how you write it in Chinese:

huā kāi kān zhé zhí xū zhé

or

花 开 堪 折 直 需 折

but what does that has to do with this thread? :p

ESP/SER – Pesic expects big things again from Team USA, Spain

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE (2010 FIBA World Championship) - The man who led the former Yugoslavia to glory at the 2002 FIBA World Championship, Svetislav Pesic, sees the United States claiming the world title later this year in Turkey.

And if not the men wearing red, white and blue?

Pesic says Spain, the side the United States beat in a memorable 2008 Olympic Final, could repeat as champions.

"The favorites, as always, are the United States," Pesic said.

"Spain (chances) will depend on whether it goes with the entire team with Pau Gasol and its other big players with experience.

"But Spain is Spain and has the capacity to win the gold medal.

"In a tournament like this, there will always be a surprise, but I think the big favorites are Spain and the United States."

Pesic is one of the great coaches in international basketball, a man who led Germany to a EuroBasket gold in 1993.

However, it was the more recent success he had with Yugoslavia, and a treble-winning Barcelona in 2002-03, that most people remember.

Indianapolis marked the first time a USA team of NBA players failed to win the gold medal at an Olympics or a FIBA World Championship.

Yugoslavia won that year after beating the United States 81-78 in the Quarter-Finals, New Zealand 89-78 in the Semi-Finals and Argentina 84-77 in the Final after overtime.

Pesic, who was doing a basketball clinic in Tenerife, Spain, at CB La Matanza, could not be any more complimentary of Gasol – a teammate of Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

"Pau is as always," he said in remarks published on the ACB website.

"Right now, he is for sure, the most important player of the (Los Angeles) Lakers.

"Without Pau, the Lakers are a different team.

"With him, they are a team that can win the ring again.

"He is not just one of the best European players to have played in the NBA, but also in his position in all-time history."
