2010 World Championship preparation games

2002 and 2004 they were finished once they lost a game. This is a fragile program that feeds off confidence.

They don't need high-pressure friendlies to "evolve into a championship caliber team". Certainly didn't need them in 2008.

Moreover, like I said in the previous post, they labor under different expectations than a normal team. If they were to win the WC but lose a game--even a friendly--the summer would be considered a mixed success at best. It is unfair and unrealistic but true.

We will agree to disagree. I tend to look at each tournament individually, and I definitely don't think this is the same program as the one from the early 2000s. 2004 was finished in training camp, they were not going to run the table whether they defeated Italy in preparation game or not. In 2008 they thrived off of the motivation from past failings. 2010 Turkey is a different tournament, different challenge, in some ways a tougher challenge in my mind. Who is to say that a tougher pre-tournament schedule would not greatly prepare them for the tournament? lol, if people want to look at a WC title with a friendly loss as failure, then I'll let them cry themselves to sleep over the 'monumental' gold medal preparation game. I'll gladly accept the title of World Champ. Yeah, your mixed success at best scenario is a possibility, but USA dominating the finals in that same scenario is another possibility..what then? Like KG says, anything is possible :D

If USA and Spain win their groups they would not meet until the final but if one of them finishes second they would meet in the quarters.

Actually Wikipedia was right, and the FIBA tournament site backs it up quite clearly. B1 and D1 are in the same bracket, and if they advance that far they will play each other in the semifinals not the final.

Fantastic news for teams like Argentina and Greece, if they win their groups they can avoid both Spain and the United States until the final. Of course that's if the US and Spain both win their groups.

Hmm...I could have sworn it was different when I posted the link. Although it is quite possible that I was hallucinating. But the potential quarterfinal matchup with D2 jumped right out at me.

Actually it is possible that I wasn't hallucinating and they did change the brackets on my link:

(if you look at the non-cached version it now displays the brackets with B1 and D1 on the same side)

In any case I am now relieved that we don't play D2 in the quarterfinals.

Lets just hope that USA and Spain finish first in their groups, so they play each other in semifinal (if they both make it that far of course).

I read that USA will play a friendly in Lithuania. Is this true?
Men teams will play in Spain. And USA U-17 will have a training camp in Lithuania, where they will play some frendly games, before world championchip.

Was kind of hoping they wouldn't play each other until the final, more drama that way. That said potentially playing this game in Madrid would add a definite twist.

There's only a small differerence between confidence and ignorance

Gasol was injured yesterday and there's talk that he might miss a month. Lakers fans seem to be blaming Eurobasket for his injuries so far, so I think it's safe to say (among other things) that he won't be participating in WC.

International basketball fans blame the Lakers for the long season and the injuries

USA/ESP – Clash of the titans set before FIBA World Championship in Turkey

COLORADO SPRINGS (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Team USA and Spain traded blows in a classic gold-medal game at the Beijing Olympics that the Americans ultimately won, 118-107.

Now the two sides have decided to square off again, this time in a glamorous friendly before the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

The warm-up game will be played somewhere in Spain in the month of August.

“We couldn’t face a better opponent than Spain as we prepare our team for the 2010 World Championship,” USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said.

“Spain is a team we have great respect for and they’ll be among the favorites to again win the World Championship.

“They were an outstanding team in 2006 when they captured the FIBA World Championship and they were again excellent in the 2008 Olympics.”
“As is evident by the five Spanish players currently playing for NBA teams and their other talented players involved with professional teams in the Euroleague, Spain is a team that is deep and very talented. They have played together for several years which helps makes them an excellent basketball team.”

One of those players is Ricky Rubio, who made his senior team bow with Spain in Beijing and put on an electric performance against the United States.

“Facing the U.S. again is a privilege,” said Rubio.

“I had the opportunity to play the final game in Beijing in 2008; it was a great performance from both teams, who played at their highest level. I´m eager to repeat, I don´t mind if it´s an exhibition game.”

The United States is still buzzing about the announcement by USA Basketball this week of its 27-man national team roster for 2010-12.

Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams and Carmelo Anthony – all members of the 2008 team – are in the group though it’s unclear who will be available this summer.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski is leading Duke University now but still has one eye on the summer and now the game against Spain has given something else to think about.

"I'm sure this will be an exciting and memorable game for all basketball fans,” he said in a statement issued by USA Basketball.

“Spain's record and accomplishments in international competitions, especially over the last several years, speaks for itself and the USA-Spain rivalry has developed into something special because of outstanding basketball games that have been played between the two teams, especially the gold medal game at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“Our training in Spain and the exhibition game will be a critical period in helping our newly formed team be better prepared for the 2010 World Championship."

Basketball is so big and important in Spain that the nation’s government has spoken of the importance of facing Team USA.
“Hosting a game of this magnitude will put our country in the spotlight of the basketball world,” said Jaime Lissavetzky, Spain´s Secretary of State for Sports.

“A game that involves the world´s two best teams is a top-notch sport event, but above all it´s an event that will reach beyond the court, an event that will be enjoyed before and after the game itself. This game is a reaffirmation of the excellent shape of the world of sports in Spain, where basketball clearly stands out.”

GER – Germans to face Puerto Rico in last warm-up games for Turkey

HAGEN (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Germany will take on Puerto Rico in their last couple of warm-up games for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

As part of a double-header on August 20 in Halle with Germany's women, who will take on Slovakia in the first game, Dirk Bauermann's men will take on the Puerto Ricans.

Germany will then face the FIBA Americas Championship silver-medalists two days later in Bonn at the Telekom Dome.

"We were here last year, felt very comfortable and well supported, even though we didn't show a very good performance against Slovenia," Bauermann said of Bonn.

"Now may the Bonn basketball fans look forward to our last preparation game before the World Championship in Turkey.

"We will make every effort to keep up with the basketball enthusiasm in Bonn and have a good game."

Germany will also host a Supercup tournament in Bamberg against Croatia, Lithuania and Turkey - three other sides that will at the FIBA World Championship – from August 13-15.

The Germans received a wild card to play at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey and will face Argentina, Serbia, Australia, Angola and Jordan in the Preliminary Round.

The country is keeping its fingers crossed that Dirk Nowitzki, who took last summer off from the national side, will return to the squad and play for Bauermann’s team.
