2010 WC absentees

Sure, there still are big players but many of them are young and inexperienced. I believe USA won't be able to overcome the best and most experienced opponents in Turkey, although they can rely on other teams absentees... It seems that USA team is especially weak in the big guys and is desperately looking for some replacements of the missing players.

Yes, yes, I know, Franz. But it's the freakin' World Championship of basketball. It should be as important as the Olympics. For me, it is.

Perhaps if we had a better name for our precious world championship. The "World Cup" sounds so much cooler.

Beno Udrih is out...
left the SLO team yesterday...
and basketball used to be my #1 sport:mad:

Australian CJ Bruton has retired from international basketball, so he's out of the WC.

Was it really that bad for Becirovic to start Udrih? I know that the coach wants depth off the bench but his decision makes no sense. Now he has no Udrih on team.

I hope that it was more about him not wanting to be bullied by players and thats why he didn't cave.

If he really didn't want to give Beno the bulk of the PG minutes then i have serious doubts about his coaching ability tbh.

It's sad how FIBA gave special invitation to Germany and Russia just because Russian and German federation promised their stars will play in Turkey and now they screwed FIBA. I hope those green cards or whatever their names are history .

I totally second that. FIBA is approaching a joke for that and all the absences.

The wild card selection process is bizarre. I don't understand it and I don't think any other people understand it. It's a typical "cigar filled room" decision.

Corey Webster was on the 2009 Oceania Championship team that beat Australia.
New Zealand Basketball Banned Over Cannabis - July 21, 2010, Yahoo! Sports

New Zealand basketball player Corey Webster will miss next month’s world championships after being banned for two months for cannabis use.

Webster tested positive to cannabis after playing a National Basketball League match for North Harbour against Hawke’s Bay on June 21.

He has been suspended until Aug. 23 by New Zealand’s Sports Tribunal, ruling him out of a three-day national team trial which was due to begin Friday.

The world championships begin in Turkey on Aug. 28 but national coach Nenad Vucinic said Webster would not be considered for selection if he missed the trials.

Beno Udrih - another absentee

Beno Udrih - another absentee

Just saw this today, Beno udrih left Slovenia because of complainst about playing time... What a moron!

OK, let's compile all those who will miss the World Championship. Let's find out what "damage" there will be to the competition. List will be constantly updated.

USA
- Kobe Bryant
- LeBron James
- Dwayne Wade
- Chris Bosh
- Dwight Howard
- Amare Stoudemire

For the U.S. team, it's worth noting the following players also won't be in Turkey for the World Championships:

Carmelo Anthony (2nd-team All-NBA in 2009-10/'08 Olympic gold medal)
Deron Williams (2nd-team All-NBA/'08 Olympic gold medalist)
Tim Duncan (3rd-team All-NBA/chosen for US Olympic team in 2000 & '04)
Joe Johnson (3rd-team All-NBA)
Brandon Roy (3rd-team All-NBA)
Carlos Boozer ('08 Olympic gold medalist)
Andrew Bynum (promising young center)
Others who won't be on hand: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, David Lee

I still like the team we do have, though.

Looking forward to the competition. Good luck to all

[I decided to add just those from the 2008 Olympics. The others fo way back and some never played internationally. Let me know if you intend to add more. rikhardur]

The only way to avoid NBA players quitting on their NTs is if the NBA rewards those players' teams with some sort of benefits towards the salary cap or the luxury tax.

Imagine if NBA awarded every team a U$S 2 million exception (for example) for each player involved in the Olympics or World Championship.

Anyway, all of USA's absences mean that Gasol-less Spain is the main favourite, and that some other teams can make the final match too.

Very creative solution. I like it!!

Oh, yeah. Forgot to mention Chris Paul, a key member of the USA's Olympic Team in 2008

Then, I would take Kakiouzis then over Kaimakoglu now every single day.

Like I said, Kaimakoglou is the same player as Kakiouzis skill wise and playing style wise. However, Kaimakoglou is much better physically. Much stronger and way more athletic.

You really need to start watching players other than just ACB players. You are starting to sound just like an NBA fan.

You telling me there is any difference in skill between the guy in the video below and Kakiouzis? Sorry, but no. And no way can Kakiouzis compare to Kaimakoglou athletically.

There's more than skill, strength and athleticism in basketball.

Don't worry, we already have you to sound like an NBA fan.
