Oh man, Gasol/Parker ?? That's too bad :( Maybe if they have good playoff they will feel rejuvenated mentally and play for national teams. They want 82 strong games from Parker, but by next fall George Hill should be ready to handle a big load of contribution..imo they can afford Parker rest as SA is always a playoff team but of course it depends on physical & mental state of player. Sad that some of the Worlds best will not be able to perform on the big stage in Turkey.

Rik, you mean players who are active, but didn't say goodbye to NT or only those who might miss this WC, but will/might play later?

Lithuania has some probable absentees

Ramunas Siskauskas - said won't play anymore

Darius Songaila - also said that won't play after Beijing, but missed the OG due injury and there're talks in summer that he might come back to NT, but probably only in 2011

Zydrunas Ilgauskas - probably should be considered as absentee, even he didn't play in NT since some 1995, but he still is lithuanian. Federation has thoughts to talk with him regarding WC, cause his contract with Cavs expires this summer

I was thinking about those who might/will miss the WC but who are still active with the NTs.

All the top teams are likely to have key players missing.

USA - Wade , Bosh , and Boozer (maybe more)
Spain - Gasol and Calderon
Argentina - Giniboli and Oberto
Greece - Papaloukas (maybe more)

Second Tier
Turkey - Turkoglu (Toronto may ask that he don't play because of injuries)
France - Parker and Batum (Portland may ask that he don't play)
Lithuania - Jasikevicius and most of their vets
Germany - Nowitzki and Kaman (won't play unless Nowitzki does)
Russia - Kirilenko? Holden?

That leaves Serbia, Slovenia, and Brazil as the only teams with full players.

Maybe FIBA should change things around with the tournaments so players are available....

Gasol is not a sure miss yet but likely. Calderon, if healthy, will play.
Also everyday i'm more convinced that in USA won't play most of teh top guys (Kobe, LeBron, Wade...)
In France i guess Batum will play and in Lithuania other than Siskauskas (and Ilgauskas but he's never came since 1996 so...) i don't think anyone else quits.

Papaloukas says he will play if healthy.

Franz put the most pessimistic prediction :)

USA- who cares? They will bring the medal contender anyway.
Spain- Only P. Gasol will miss most likely.
France- T. Parker only might miss the tournament.
Argentina- Manu only might miss the tournament.
Greece- All the best if healthy.
Lithuania- All the best if healthy. Ilgauskas and Macijauskas highly unlikely, but Ilgauskas never played and Macijauskas wasn't playing 4 years for NT anyway)
Russia- All the best, except Holden I guess.
Germany- Dirk most likely will miss the tournament, but still not clear.

So the picture is pretty OK. Few super stars will be missing, but that won't ruin the tournament.

I want everyone to be there but I'm just being honest. Sad truth is that players only come for the Olympics (that's more true among the Americans) than the WC. That sucks because WC is the better tournament with much more excitement.

But hey, you can't force people to come. NBA GM's (Mark Cuban specifically) are pain in the ass and only care about their own teams so that makes things problematic. They won't allow their players to participate in non-NBA tournaments.

But this is not official. I'm only speculating on what could happen. Players can change minds.

USA- who cares? They will bring the medal contender anyway.

You can't make drastic changes and expect to win medal. USA without main players (Lebron, Kobe, Wade, ect) and they won't make it to top four round.

if this players will not play
this years WC will be boring and not exciting!!

JR Holden said he will play if his agent asks him to play. Probably if Russian basketball federation will make a request ($) for him to play.

Bad news for Brazil:

Leandro Barbosa entered Monday averaging 19.6 minutes per game, his lowest average since 2004-05.
He's also shooting career-lows from the field (44%) and from 3-point land (35%). His ankle has healed but his right wrist still bothers him and 'clicks' when he dribbles the ball. He intends to have wrist surgery after the season to remove a cyst, so don't expect it to improve any time soon.

Spain- Only P. Gasol will miss most likely. ??? but why

Argentina- Manu only might miss the tournament. .. why?
Greece- All the best if healthy... It become an aged old team ...!!!
Lithuania- All the best if healthy. Ilgauskas and Macijauskas ??
Russia- All the best, except Holden I guess. ???

FRA – Parker ponders whether to play in Turkey

SAN ANTONIO (2010 FIBA World Championship) - France may head to the 2010 FIBA World Championship minus their biggest star with San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker now admitting he may take the summer off with the national team to rest.

Gregg Popovich’s Spurs (23-13) have been winning a lot of games with the 27-year-old Parker running the point, including a 105-85 blowout of a shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old Parker has scored at least 21 points in four of the last five games, including 22 against the Lakers, but his scoring average of 16.7 points per contest is his lowest in five years and the superstar says he's just plain tired.

"I just think I've played too much basketball," Parker said to nba.com.

"I've played five summers in a row, and I think it's about time I need a rest.

"It's going to be tough. The contract's coming up, and Pop wants me to play well every night.

"Sometimes it's tough because you know you play all these championship runs and every year I play for the national team. Every year.

"This year is the first year I've found my body is a little bit tired, you know?

"So I'll have to make some decisions, because I'm not Superman.

"I can't do 82 games at the level Pop wants, and then play on the national team."

No one can play forever, and if Parker can't make it to Turkey, France would be without their biggest name.

Not many teams can overcome the loss of superstars although the United States, Spain and probably France can cope better than most.

Promising youngsters like Antoine Diot of Le Mans, the MVP of their win against Turkey at the EuroBasket that clinched a spot in the FIBA World Championship for France, would certainly be ready to fill the void.

France has shown in the past that they can win games without Parker.

Last summer, in their biggest game of the EuroBasket Additional Qualifying Round at Italy, Parker did not play yet France won in overtime and the victory effectively propelled them into the EuroBasket.

Four years ago at the FIBA World Championship in Japan, Parker broke his finger just days before the start of the tournament yet Les Bleus still came in fifth.

Parker is not the only Spur who is involved with is country's national team program.

Popovich’s assistant, Brett Brown, is the coach of Australia. Matt Bonner is expected to play for Canada this year and Ian Manhinmi is an emerging French center who recently had 15 points, nine rebounds and a block in 21 minutes of the Spurs’ 97-85 win over New Jersey. Manhinmi looks a good bet to make the France squad for a second straight year.

San Antonio also has Manu Ginobili, the most famous player in the history of Argentinian basketball.

Ginobili did not play at the FIBA Americas Championships in 2005 or 2007 but still represented his country the following years at the 2006 FIBA World Championship and the 2008 Olympics. Argentina fans will be hoping that the 32-year-old, who missed last year's FIBA Americas Championship as well, will suit up again for Argentina in Turkey.

GERMANY[/B]
- Chris Kaman (?)
- Dirk Nowitzki (?)
if this will really happen all hell should break lose on Germany..
the only reason or the biggest reason they got the invitation is Dirk..
without him they wouldn't even be considered being there..
it will be a huge slap in the face of FIBA and the whole basketball world if it turns out that Dirk won't be there at the end..

^^^ Mark Cuban has final say. So unless FIBA talked to him, who knows circumstance of Nowitzki.

actually Cuban doesn't have a final saying in the matter..
there is no legal actions he can take to forbid Nowitzki to play for Germany..
he can say no but it is up to Nowitzki if he will obbey it or not..
and Nowitzki together with Kaman was one of the huge reasons why FIBA decided to give Germany an invitation..
especially since before the invitations were handed out Nowitzki said he would like to play at WC if they get an invitation..
and now there is possibility he won't play at the end..

If Cuban says not to play, Nowitzki has to obey. He could ignore requests but he would make matters worst.

NBA is full of pricks unfortunately.

If Mark Cuban says to Dirk Nowitzky not to play. Nowitzky can play in whe WC and he should recieve many offers from other NBA teams.

Too premature to say...

As far as Greece is concerned I hope that Teo and DD are ok - then we will roll at full power..
