Is the PBA forming a new RP NT for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in the United Arab Emirates on May 1?

If so, I think they should include Willie Miller, & Jay-R Reyes also.

Chot Reyes Wants Younger All-pro Cage Team

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Posted date: January 08, 2008

MANILA, Philippines -- A younger, all-pro basketball team may don the national colors as the country picks up the pieces following its failure to qualify in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rookie guard Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia Realty, Talk ‘N Text’s Jay Washington and Alaska’s Sonny Thoss are among the new prospects for the RP men’s team that will seek redemption in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in the United Arab Emirates on May 1.

“It will not be the same team,” said national team coach Chot Reyes. “Our thrust is to really go younger. Our national pool is still there, but everybody in that team knows they can be replaced any time.”

Asi Taulava, Danny Seigle and Eric Menk were among the seasoned PBA stars who suited up for the national squad that failed to clinch an Olympic slot after a ninth-place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan, in August last year.

“Everything we’re doing today is for the FIBA Asia Championship in 2009,” Reyes said of the event that will serve as a qualifier for the 2010 World Championship.

But Reyes said the fate of the squad will partly rely on the new PBA commissioner, who is expected to be named on Thursday.

“It’s hard to tell until a (new) commissioner gets elected,” said Reyes. “We have to discuss (with him) the national team as soon as possible. We have no problem with the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas), we’ve been having constant discussions.”

The PBA board, composed of representatives from the 10 teams, will decide who will be the next commissioner between lawyer Chito Salud and telecommunications executive Lambert Ramos.

the problem with the RP NT program is its prepare-when-it-is-near culture and lack of continuous set of activities. the pool together with the coaching and training staff seem to not want to have regular practice sessions even after an international stint. right after the FIBA Asia Olympic Qualifier last year, the RP NT has ceased to continue with the program. we still feel as though we are like the US NBA-packed NT who can actually form a decent team anytime they want.

personally, i think the Cambodian National Team has become a much "better" sacrificing and patriotic team than the RP NT so far.

but yes, as early as now, let us consider forming the youngest best team that we can have minus the hype and politics. Jay-R Reyes and Jay Washington should be included.

My choices:
Centers: Samigue Eman
Sonny Thoss
Forwards:Kelly Williams
Kerby Raymundo
Joe DeVance
Jay Washington
Arwind Santos
Guards: Jimmy Alapag
Ryan Reyes
Gabe Norwood
James Yap
?????

Japeth will have one more of NCAA eligibility left next year. I doubt if WKU will let him play for the NT. Last year, a team member, Raed Mostafa, played for the German U-18 team and WKU insiders considered his lack of practice with the rest of the WKU team during the summer a key factor in its failure to reach the NCAA tournament.

This year the asian cup will be on fire btw those teams:
Saba-Iran
Al Jalaa-Syria
Riyadi-Lebanon
Rayan-Quatar
Zain(Fastlink)-Jordan

Good luck for Rp NT in the near future.

daniab, from your list, it looks like the other countries are sending their club teams? Is this correct?

The Fiba Asia Champions Cup is a club tourney right? remember the two imports per team?

To be honest,i dont have any info about the other asian countries. What i know that KSA might withdraw from this tournament for several reasons. Also, those teams already named in the above post confirmed their participation in the Asian cup this year.

YOUNG GUNS NEEDED IN R.P. 5

By Joel Orellana
Reporter

NEW faces will banner the next men’s basketball team that eyes a slot in the 2010 Fiba World Championship in Turkey.

Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Most Valuable Player James Yap of Purefoods, Sonny Thoss of Alaska and Sta. Lucia Realty’s dynamic rookie Ryan Reyes and Talk ’N Text’s Anthony Washington are some of the players that returning head coach Chot Reyes mentioned as possible candidates for the next Dream Team of RP basketball.

Reyes was retained as national head coach despite failing to secure for the country a spot in this August’s Beijing Olympics in the Fiba-Asia tournament on August in Japan.

Reyes said he is also eyeing US-based Japeth Aguilar (six-foot-nine), Gian Chiu (six-foot-10) and Filipino-American Ray Parks, son of seven-time PBA Best Import Bobby Parks.

“Our thrust right now is really to get younger because we’re really looking at the 2009 Fiba-Asia Championship,” said Reyes.

“But the pool is still there. Everyone on the team and in the pool knows that they can be replaced anytime. Those who did not make it the last time will be given the chance this time,” Reyes added.

Asi Taulava, Jimmy Alapag, Renren Ritualo, Kerby Raymundo, Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Kelly Williams, Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Mick Pennisi, Eric Menk and amateur Gabe Norwood comprised the team that finished ninth in the Fiba-Asia Championship in Tokushima.

Except for Raymundo, Norwood and Williams, the rest will be in their 30s in 2009. Taulava will be 36, Alapag 32, Ritualo 30, Siegle 33, Hontiveros 32, Helterbrand 33, Caguioa 30, Pennisi 34 and Menk 35.

Reyes could not expound on the new national team because the PBA will only name a new commissioner Thursday.

“One of the main [things] is for a PBA commissioner to be elected first then we’ll discuss the national team,” said Reyes. “Sa SBP [Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas] naman walang problema because we are in constant communication [with them].”

After Tokushima, the players returned to their mother teams and the training stopped.

Reyes himself turned busy with the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP), specifically coaching clinics in the countryside.

Once the new team is formed, it intends to compete first in the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in May in the United Arab Emirates.

Reyes said it would be good for the team to start training early. “The sooner the better, but right now it’s too hard to tell until the new PBA commissioner is elected,” he said.

Reyes, who was nominated for the commissionership but backed out, added that the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, is not on the new team’s schedule.

“In the original agreement, the Asian Games is [not in the PBA]. That was under the old leadership (of Noli Eala). I don’t know kung ganoon pa rin,” said Reyes.

with the way taulava is playing right now (averaging double doubles) i think he is not yet done, he is still good to be a back up center or power forward for the nationals..also the national team needs a veteran leader which i think taulava is the more likely one..his intensity and passion for the game and for the country can really fire up the team.... and to note centers and power forwards do not retire early as compared to guards, they do not necessarily need speed, all they need is their timing(gulang) for rebounds their strength for positioning and defense...they are still effective even in theur late 30's.. imagine our nt having a naturalized 7 footer for center and taulava 6'9 as the power forward, and back-ups with the likes of chiu 6'10, aguilar 6'9, washington 6'7,devance 6'8 and thoss 6'8 what a powerful pool of frontline could that be...

yes..i sure hope Asi will be called not just to play but to show the ropes around and school our young bigs

Maybe we can Add Ryan Reyes and Gabe Norwood for Guards. So as with Japeth aguilar. And that would be a tall line up.

Gabe/JWash/Kelly(hustle)/JoeD/Japeth or Gian or a Naturalized, then we can move Japeth and Gian to PF.
Others: Sonny Thoss, Ryan reyes, J-ar Reyes...Just Need some for other Positions

no offense to Gian Chiu and believers, but I think playing in a Division III school, he is supposed to dominate. I wanted to believe he was of better caliber too, but the kind of numbers he puts up at D3 just says otherwise.

on my opinion...Gian Chiu, Japeth and Ray Parks are good choices to consider, they need exposure at their very young age...soon enough they'll improve and get used to everything about the NT, the international competition, the hype, the pressure etc etc...a good example would be Anton Ponomarev, when he was only 14 or 16 (not quite sure, but during his teenage years), he was already playing for the Kazakhstan NT, and look now how he improved through the years...young players on the NT would not be as good as the PBA players who are now on their prime but for sure they are good investment for RP basketball's future. :)

Its not important if the team looks weak for now, the future is more important.

Translation:
They should really form the national team now, and stop sending selection of professional basketball players of the philippines. Thats what I call them.

Yeah eman should be considered in the NT, He has done well in the pba even when he plays with limited time. Jay wash should have been in the NT last year, but now he should be a shoo in. Joe devance and ryan reyes must also be included. And one little suggestion, we should choose big SG from now on. The likes of Arwin santos must now play SG or at least we limit the hieght of our SG to 6'3" up.:)
