Noosa scrapes past RP Youth, 83-76

MANILA, Philippines -- Noosa Shoes blew a double-digit cushion in the final period, before holding on to an 83-76 triumph against a reinforced Nokia Philippine Youth Team in the Philippine Basketball League Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
The under-18 squad rallied behind new recruit Norbert Torres, Gabriel Banal, and Joel De Guzman to trim a 25-point gap, 74-49, at the end of the third period to just nine points, 83-74, in the last 59.1 seconds.
Torres, a hefty 6-foot-7 center, made an instant impact with 17 points just a week after arriving from Toronto, Canada.
A recruit from Mother Teresa High School,
Torres completed his all-around game with nine rebounds, three steals, and even accounted for three of the team's six blocks.
The youth team -- training for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Championship for Junior Men on May 1 -- outscored the Shoe Stars, 27-9, in the fourth quarter.
With the victory, the Shoe Stars boosted their quarterfinal bid with a 6-7 record.
Andrian Celada paced the Shoe Stars with 12 points built on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting clip.
