#6 Zaid Abbas was an instant idol...hehe... mamaw is the word. I would like to have a pic with him but unfortunately cp was already lowbat after pic with GS.

I wonder why the General Admission wasn't full (libre na nga e bakante pa), the lower box was not that much affordable, P212 pax. pagpasok ko sa loob tapos nakita ko yun gen.admission na walang tao e napamura ako, sana sa Gen Admission na lang ako, hehe, napagastos pa ako.

seems like the event wasn't advertised/or intentionally marketed for the event not to conflict with PBA's interest, since both games were held today Sunday.

Smart Gilas halts Jordan
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated June 28, 2010 12:00 AM

Mark Barocca of Smart Gilas tries a steal off Sam Daghles of Jordan in last night’s final game of the MVP Cup. Joey Mendoza
| Zoom MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas came charging in the dying minutes and stunned World Championship-bound Jordan, 91-80, to top the 2010 Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge, also known as the MVP Cup, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last night.

Mac Baracael played a near flawless game as he spewed 22 points, including four triples while JV Casio came through with 12 of his 15 points in the final two minutes to break a 77-all deadlock and the hearts of the Jordanians, who will see action in the FIBA World Championship this August in Turkey.

“I’m satisfied with the win and I feel happy winning it for the Filipino people,” said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, who drew level with Mario Palma and the Jordanians following a 75-83 loss Friday.

Marcus Douthit struggled in this game as he finished with 10 points on a woeful four-of-12 shooting. He turned the ball six times a few days after averaging 22 points including a 26-point effort against China’s Dongguan in a 74-64 win Thursday. He fouled out with less than two minutes to go.

This, however, may not prevent Toroman from recommending him as Smart Gilas’ naturalized player for this November’s 16th Guangzhou Asian Games and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship in Lebanon.

“I will recommend him when we meet tomorrow (Monday),” said Toroman of the 6’10” former Providence standout and Russian League veteran.

Filipino-American Greg Slaughter made a good account of himself in the absence of Douthit as he had a key block, a rebound and a basket to help in the cause.

But the day belonged to Baracael, who finally came out of a slump with a spectacular effort reminiscent of his mighty performance in last January’s import-laced Dubai Invitational where the Nationals finished a strong third.

Casio also had a clutch game despite being sidelined for a couple of months because of a knee injury.

“I’m happy for Mac because he really struggled in the last month and a half, he played like this in Dubai,” said Toroman. “As for JV, he’s back in his old form even though he’s just back from injury.”

Earlier, Talk N’ Text repeated over Dongguan of China, 85-73, in a game that was tarnished by Mark Cardona punching American import Ronald Allen late in the game.

The incident was triggered after Allen fouled hard the driving Cardona on a fast break play.

After a verbal confrontation, Cardona came out of nowhere and punched Allen on the face, resulting in his ejection and triggering a bench-clearing incident and a near brawl between the two squads.

After cooler heads prevailed, an agitated Allen was also tossed out for his fighting posture and was led to their dugout.

A few minutes later, Allen came out of the locker room and charged into the court to pick up a fight against the Tropang Texters.

Talk N’ Text coach Chot Reyes, who coached the all-pro team that crashed out of the quarterfinals in the 2007 FIBA-Asia Championship in Tokushima, Japan, was seen responding to Ronald’s challenge with his team behind him before several Smart Gilas players, some SBP officials and policemen who were there prevented the situation from getting out of hand.

It was a sad ending to a tournament dedicated to basketball chief Manny V. Pangilinan and was supposed to be a friendly tournament among the host country and visiting teams from China and Jordan.

What are you guys gicing the troll the attention he wants?? Let him go..^^

WATCHED THE GAME!!!!! AND IT WAS WORTH IT!!! IT WAS AMAZING!!!^^ For those who saw a guy wearing a black shirt, shorts and slippers, holding a white umbrella and CRAZILY cheering in the lower box section, that was me..:D

1st game comments: WATTA PUNCH! But it wasn't needed.. Nakakahiya si Cardona.. Nakakaawa si Ronald Allen.. Zhang Kai can really play..^^

2nd game comments: Lots of positives I tell you..

Baracael is the man.. He is really fearless ala-Tubid w/o the angas.. The Marnel left in Dubai found a way to return to him.. His being undersized at the 4 is forgotten because of the things he brought to the court.. He actually contained Abbas this time.. Though Abbas was still able to do his thing, he wasn't abused.. GREAT JOB MAC!

Casio is back! His steadiness actually kept Gilas in the game and Jordan at bay.. 3s 3s 3s baby..

Tiu was also amazing.. He is now hitting!!! And it was like a part of Lassiter fused with Tiu because he was defending pretty well..:p

Lassiter is a player.. Nothing to say anymore..

Lutz was also awesome! No wonder SBP is really keen on him.. He could defend well too.. He also has a good drive.. And he is actually an excellent finisher.. Saw no hesitation from him this time..

Japeth was ok.. His putback slam energized Gilas' 2nd qtr.. I think that's the time when they built that HT lead.. He played ok D but still won't bang bodies inside.. But his game today was on a positive note.. Good job Japeth..:D

Barroca wasn't much of a factor.. But he scored and actually had 3-4 steals..

Douthit should be signed by Gilas.. He is really the guy we have been looking for.. Like the gilasinsider said, he needs to be an energy guy for Gilas.. But there is nothing wrong with what he currently gives to the team.. Actually he was the one who encouraged the crowd to distract the FT shooters of Jordan.. He was like... a Filipino..

And the boy...err...MAN of the 4th qtr.. GREG SLAUGHTER! To be honest, I was really in doubt when he was in the game when Douthit fouled out.. I think even everyone in the NAS was.. But when the ONE-ON-ONE BLOCK ON RASHEIM WRIGHT happened, all the doubts were gone.. I AM NOW OFFICIALLY A GREG SLAUGHTER BELIEVER.. Watch out for this guy..

As for the whole team performance, they were all awesome.. Toroman really adjusted from their last game (IMO the comments made to Rajko by some of you guys were damn unfair.. All that because of the loss.. Hate it.. I'm telling you, he effing knows what he is doing..).. Everybody was hitting outside.. The defense was Euroleague like.. Energy was high.. Everyone was hustling.. And of course, the HEART pushed them through it..

This was the 5 that gave Jordan problems on the scoring end and the match-ups:
PG - Casio - #7
SG - Lassiter - Wright
SF - Lutz - Daghles
PF - Baracael - Zaid Abbas
C - Douthit - Islam Abbas
I RECOMMEND TO WATCH THE GAME REPLAY TO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING(err..TYPING) ABOUT..

AN interesting moment in the game.. Midway the 4th qtr, Toroman inserted Tiu for Casio and Tiu manned the point.. I think the 5 was Tiu, Ababou, Lassiter, Baracael and Douthit.. Tiu was actually playing the point well.. I believe was made to rest Casio.. IMO he didn't insert Barroca because he isn't as steady as Tiu/Casio.. So he let Kap do the PG chores for bout..less than 2mins??

Now for the Jordan side of things: Islam Abbas was great against Douthit on offense.. Zaid Abbas, like I said earlier, was doing his thing.. Wright wasn't a factor because of a guy named Marcio.. And Daghles was amazing...then not...then amazing again..

BOTTOMLINE: GILAS WON!!!

(I believe the refs didn't take any part in the Gilas win.. That's my opinion..)

agree except on what you've said about marcus.. he's ok but IMHO, he's not that energetic like other gilas players.. he seems so slow and a bit "tamad" for me.. i dont know but maybe he's suffering from an injury or something.. he's ok but there's something i am looking for an import for our NT.. something more energetic and more athletic that he is..

so, we know who the midget was..lolz. siya yun nasa unahan tapos pinapalapit nya yun import, para siyang si Bruce Lee....parang sinisignal nya sa mga Gilas Boys et. al pati mga tga Donguan na, wag nyo awatin, palapitin nyo ng makuyog yan ng mga bata ko..hehe.

if accounts were right, it was Coach Chot himself who spearheaded the supposed to be "Kuyog Session". lolz

for me the Guy is OK. very efficient on the court, especially in rebounding and defending big guys. he needs a lot of help from the Gilas big guys, he can't be playing 40 mins. on court, his efficiency will be lesser as games progress due to fatigue. if Gilas can afford, e itodo na natin, naturalize another one.. :) either Yao Ming or Zaid Abbas...lolz.

Just edited my post.. I was actually suggesting that Marcus should be more of an energy guy.. Maybe the long post didn't get me to check everything.. Thanks!^^

thanks for the video bhinov
what a size differential on the guards, baroca and tiu looked like small children

good game by gilas
again showing its HEART to win
baracael is the stabilizer of this team, he does well and the team will win
looks like his slump is done !!!

next up jones cup
any feeds and links so we can watch on the computer

btw i am a GILAS fanboy
who else can we support for international glory
these guys make us proud to be pinoys

Good job, Gilas.

Unlike every fan here you know what this game is worth unlike half of the people in this board. More than this rather nice win, we've realized what our weaknesses are, and in the long term, recognizing such is much more important ;)

bandwagon, here they come........i hate posters that say a lot when the team is losing then the first one to ride the bandwagon when the time is winning..wt....f...

there's only a couple of posters in here that are patient enough to ride the team (even in winning and losing)..

Are there no scoring summary of Dongguan for games 2-3? Not happy they lost all games like that. Anyway they are traveling to Japan and will play Japan NT on 07/07 so you can gauge your wins, I suppose.

Congratulations on the win, but you shouldn't read too much from it. Enjoy it for the moment but Asian Games/Fiba Asia will be completely different.

What do you expect, it's MVP's Invitational League, thus TNT thinks they own it..lolz. I wonder if the import really deserves the punch, is there something he said that provoked Cardona to throw his super coward punch.

on the N'th try of the Donguan Import to retaliate..may bansot dun sa TNT Coaching Staff, pinapalapit pa nya yun import, as if naman sya yun mananapak.

a midget on the TNT Coaching Staff is taunting the import to come closer...while the import was struggling to come close because a lot of players even the Gilas boys were preventing him to come near TNT.

who is this coach I cannot imagine nash aboy bong or joshua reyes doing this. TnT showing they are tough the wrong way they just bullying the young chinese team since the first game goorjan is a class man. To think if they can do this outside the country:D

Near brawl taints TNT's win over Chinese club Dongguan

The Talk 'N Text and Dongguan New Century match only served as an appetizer for the championship game but the battle for third in the 2010 Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge nearly turned into a brawl at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Tropang Texters cruised to a lopsided 85-73 win against the Chinese club team but TNT guard Mac Cardona and Leopards' American import Ronald Allen made it more interesting.

The near free-for-all took place in the 4:31 mark of the final period when Cardona was fouled hard by Allen after attempting to complete a fastbreak layup off a Jimmy Alapag pass.

Cardona landed hard on the floor then went face-to-face with Allen. Suddenly, the former PBA best player of the conference award winner threw a punch that landed on Allen’s face.

Cardona and Allen were pacified by their teammates. Both players were also immediately ejected and Allen, obviously furious about that punch, was sent back to the dressing room.

But just when everyone thought that the game would continue, Allen suddenly came out from another dugout exit hoping for a last ditch effort to get back at Cardona.

However, his efforts proved to be a waste as the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas, waiting for their championship game against Jordan, were able to restrain Allen with Marcus Douthit trying to calm his compatriot.

Talk 'N Text saw Allen wanted to run towards their bench with even Texters coach Chot Reyes gesturing him to come over before security and tournament organizers were able to control the incident.

"He lost his cool (Allen) and he was outsmarted by Macmac," said Reyes. "But it's just a very normal circumstance in games like this which for me is good because it shows that we took this game seriously."

The Tropang Texters, who is using this as one of their preparations for the semifinals of the PBA Fiesta Conference, led by 28 points with Jimmy Alapag making four triples.

Mark Yee topscored with 15 points while Alapag added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

It was the second straight win by Talk 'N Text over Dongguan, a team that placed 11th in the recent Chinese Basketball Association season.

Kevin Kruger finished with 24 points while lanky Zhang Kai added 21 points and four boards.

Allen registered 11 points and eight rebounds but shot just 2-of-18 from the field which obviously added to his frustration. – JVP, GMANews.TV

what's wrong Chot? still insecure about that mistake you did at the 2007 fiba cup? Earlier in the pba season there was a walkout and then this? you're quite the drama queen(yes, queen) mr. Reyes.

Moving off to that, congrats to SG good to see the guys who played in Dubai have returned, I hope you guys will stay and would never leave again. Oh, and more minutes for Greggy boy please! :D

true! and the number 1 primadonna in the pba or even in the whole phil. basketball.

I'm happy, this is a good psychological win for us because even if our team is not a 100% healthy, lack of kwill ( I hope ir is not the blood disorder again ) and bochero, and douhit is injured, and inconsistent Japeth we still won big. psychological because this will make other teams aware that we are a good team and they cannot be complacent.

I'm happy for greg thats why I'm confident about him. Just give him a lot of playing time and as a starter and I assure you guys he will make a difference for our country even if he does not score, his presence is so important.

I have not seen any game of Smart Gilas in the recent Philippine Invitational Challenge to make a comment on their development. A win is a win but the more convincing victory for me if it came off a tournament outside of the Philippines like the Jones Cup or any FIBA-sanctioned tournament.

Its more of a pshychological and confidence building victory for our national team. For the SBP, it showed FIBA that the Philippines can host a world-class tournament like the FIBA-Asia Championships.

Go SMART GILAS. Go TEAM PILIPINAS!
