With Vujosevic CSKA can solve its eternal problem of bad scouting.
This season alone, newcomers: Ponkrashev, Sokolov, Radenovic/that D-league guy/Mensa-Bonsu
Considering the fact that aging CSKA roster isn't getting any younger in 2-3 season ahead , it does makes a sense
On the other hand, Pashutin won almost all trophies available & was a breath away from beating Barca in Eurolegue semis ... to send him home after such season is a shame
There are hefty discussions going on on Russian bball boards. Some consider Pashutin's achievements last season to speak for themselves. Others say, he just continued with what Messina has left him. In fact, where did his team gotten worse? By getting rid of their third PG - Zisis - giving more playing time to Planinic in the E and Ponkrashov in the Russian league? By losing Morris and thus giving more playing time and a clear role to Khryapa? By losing Lorbek and getting an emerging low post center - Kaun - to play more and do so effectively? He never had a healthy Smodis however and thus he was less potent on the big positions on offense but the rest remained and performed well.
CSKA's scouting isn't bad. The wanted to have a Russian team and got what the market was giving them. Actually, some of the best Russian players. Sokolov didn't pan out as Kaun's substitute. Getting Ponkrashov back was a bad move as he cannot perform as a third string player. But they wanted to have Russian players on the squad... Radenovic was a strange decision, while Pops proved to be a good addition. Not, that he made CSKA stronger but more people came to watch CSKA due to his spectacular dunks and the crowd loudly demanded from the coach to play him. They sold more tickets, the sold more jerseys because of Pops. They actually generated excitement opposed to their usual mechanical play.
For sure, getting Vujosevic does probably mean getting some Serbian talents to play for them, but...
- it would be a spit in Pashutin's face as he was poclaimed by them as a good young Russian coach who would lead this projects to great heights.
- CSKA won't win anything with a couple of young Serbian talents alone
- Vujosevic hasn't been in the situation, where he has to deal with real and proven superstars, who have won numerous titles
- It's questionable, how far Dule's connections go beyond Serbian basketball. He isn't the one who could lure big players to Moscow as Ivkovic and Messina have done.
- Dule has always thrived in a system, where he had lots of tall players and an offensively dominating center. CSKA doesn't have those tools.
Anyway, we'll wait and see.
