Eurobasket 2025 - General Discussion

What you’re saying has nothing to do with the actual issue. After the game there’s a post-match interview. You’re asked: “How did you manage to hold a 30 PPG scorer to just 12 points?” You give credit to the greatness of your opponent first, and then you explain your team’s game plan regarding Giannis. And in that context, you correctly point out that he is not a great passer and that you tried to exploit that weakness in his game. That’s it. Nothing more.

Giannis finished the tournament with an AST/TO ratio of 0.9, a terrible terrible terrible number. The team clearly prepared with that in mind, and you referenced it in your answer. Very simple. The Greek media blew it out of proportion. Let’s move on.
no if smaller star player start telling that top 5 world player at is weak at this or that journalist will make sure it will become big deal :)

When you beat all time great player. You just say today we were lucky stopping him today, not go on such detail analyses what top 5 world player is bad overall

It was one game and there 10 years of greatness in Giannis case. All you dong with such remarks creating very motivated opponnet in next meetings, get angry one country fan base and winning nothing form it

Giannis will be history after 2027 anyway. He can say whatever he wants. We owned his butt and thats it.
For fans its normal to talk in such disrespfull fashion about top 5 worlds player.

One good tournament in 15 years and they picture themselfs like gods already that normal emotional fans reaction of fan base who didnt win for so long :) Is their moment they can trash now other fan bases.

But for star player this is not acceptable and Sengun got very harsh but correct response. Hopefully he learnd the lesson and got the message after being called in media "boy" shut your mouth

Buddy, we had a semi final win with a 26 points margin. There is nothing harsher than a devastating loss and Sengün was right. He is a solid but not a great passer.

I just gotta say that we tend to forget that these kids are 1. Usually uneducated 2. Not fluent in English. So we should give them a bit of the benefit of the doubt when they say things because of the language barrier. Maybe they meant something else, maybe the tone was not communicated as expected, maybe certain expressions are used in one language and not the other etc etc

Saying a player is not a good passer is not an insult. Greeks just reacted too emotional after a devastating loss. Thats all.

In the end, both Giannis and Sengun posted apologies at the same time on social media. Case closed.
Too bad, I had a personal bet about reaching 5k comments or not, which will define if this forum is still alive.
Maybe Toruko can analyse the big upcoming turkey dynasty in 150 comments

In the end Sengun and Giannis sent a peace message and everything ended… But in the meantime I got “injured” in the Great Turkish- Greek Facebook war of 2025…

ps Somehow survived the Reddit troll fest tho. 😬

C'mon Toruko, I have the impression that you are still upset. A silver medal is a great achievement. Next tournament Türkie will be even better. So there is no reason to be upset. Heads up and focus on WC qualification.

Well, no, I am not really upset or disapponted. In fact I am even a bit glad that we didnt go all the way because it would have made our guys sloppy. Now there is a story ongoing. I on the other hand have the impression that Spanoulis was very disappointed. The reaction after Sengüns comment about Giannis passing qualities made him very grumpy and I have always an urge to confront everything which goes against my rule book of mutual interactions. This is how I am.

My bad. My impression was then wrong.

Of course you are disappointed as a coach if your team looses by 30+ pts and gets trashed on all aspects of the game. You dont need to be a psychologist to realize that. Spanoulis was dissapointed and embaressed for sure. If he would not have won the bronze game afterwards he maybe even would have disqualified himself as coach of the greek NT and beyond.

I had the impression that he wanted to protect his players and especially Giannis.

If you ask me personally, passing is not one of Giannis biggest weaknesses. He passes quite good. I remember one scene against Italy where he managed to get rid of the Italian wall by jumping very high at the baseline and giving a very nice pass to (I think) Papanikolaou standing at the 3pt line who then also made the 3pt shot.

I think Giannis strongest weakness is missing 3pt shooting and free throws. In addition, Giannis movement under the rim is also quite restricted especially when he plays with his back towards the basket. He only makes spin moves, spin moves, spin moves. Many times with traveling violations which most of the time are not called.

So your rulebook says that it is the smartest move ever done by a basketball player of 23 years of age to mention weaknesses of a NBA MVP and Eurobasket topscorer?

Well, there is no doubt that he is a great player and aside from his obvious problems like three point shooting and ft shooting (here he is just inconsistent) there are some other not very known problems. He doesnt know how to defend post up games. Its quite normal because nobody plays post games in the NBA aside from Sengün and Jokic.

Passing is another story. I think Sengün was partly right although he couldnt explain himself clearly. He is a solid passer but not at the level of Jokic or Sengün. He often plays to his next open man or to the corners. If you rotate well and dont overhelp there is a good chance to contest Greek shooters. He is a very good passer but not as creative as mentioned European big men

I think Spanoulis overreacted. It was wrong to discredit an opponents team player labeling him as a "kid". It should be clear that a reaction will follow.

Agreed!

Exactly and I in my greek paranoid way of thinking I have the suspicion that this is what he really wanted to say in his statement.
He wanted to say; "I am a better passer than Giannis".

Actually, from my point of view, some of his passing quality is due to the fact that the refs fail to call his 3 second violations as frequently as refs fail to call Giannis travelling during his spin moves.

I would not call this overreaction. In the same way that I think that it is not the smartest choice of an 23 year old player to mention weaknesses of a NBA MVP and Eurobasket top scorer (Because this is what he is. He is not just one of many great pleayers) I would say that Spanoulis response was not really necessary. Giannis does not need his protection.
